I have a preschool and daycare and bought this for the kids to play with. It comes with paper money and little coins so those are not suitable for young ones. Also the little scanner and key pad are not attached, you have to put the end in a little hole and my keypad won't keep the string in so I will have to glue those pieces in, not sure why they didn't just do that...maybe they found it to be a hazard? It would make a great gift that is sure to last years. I took the one star off because I have to glue the pieces, otherwise it would have been 5 full stars. ... show more

My three year old granddaughter has not stopped playing with this since it arrived. I am tired of playing customer, but she is full speed ahead as the check out clerk. I have decided to not buy any more plastic toys and this has been a wonderful wooden toy. She is fine with the fact that she and I have to make sounds for the scanner, and for the credit card wiper; that is part of the fun! No batteries to replace, no plastic junk in a landfill five years hence. Several other reviewers commented on the money getting stuck in the drawer, but we have not had that issue. I spent a bit of time the first day showing her how to slide the money in delicately under the elastic band and ...no problem. I highly recommend this toy! The Hape Checkout Register is a great alternative to the plastic, noisy, beeping, battery hog register toys. It seems quite durable and is pleasing to look at, with bright but mellow colors and natural wood portions. My chidren especially love the pushable buttons, credit card swiper, and register paper to write on. They did, however, suggest that it might have been more fun to have a roll of register paper in place of the abacus. My only complaint about this item is that, from the very first day we opened it, the paper money and coins often get stuck behind the cash drawer. There is no easy way to retrieve the paper money, which jams the drawer, and no easy remedy that I have yet found for this problem. It often results in a quarter of an hour spent tipping the toy upside down and feeling along the insides to dislodge the paper. Still, if I have to choose between stuck paper money or beeping and flashing, I'll take the stuck paper money any day. ... show more

I wanted to get a wooden register because I don’t like having too many plastic toys. Of course, it doesn’t make any cool sounds or have a push button drawer that pops out immediately. My 2 year old kept asking me to put the batteries in, haha. So I read all the reviews and was willing to put up with the stuck drawer or the money getting caught just because this was the best wooden register I saw. We haven’t had an issue with either problem. Drawer comes in and out smoothly. The money needs to be slid under the red string so that it lays flatter. Not sure if people are doing that or showing their kid how to slide in money. I haven’t noticed money getting stuck if you keep it under the red string. I’ve attached a picture of this. ... show more

    • Doesn't function properly but it can be modified.
I bought this in spite of all of the bad reviews in relation to the problem with the drawer sticking. I couldn't find any other registers that were nearly as adorable, so I bought it with the intention of finding a hack to fix the drawer problem. Here is how to do it: (It took me about 10 minutes). 1. Remove only the lower screws on each side. 2. Pop off the bottom panel and pull out the drawer. 3. Unscrew the stopper on the back of the drawer and then use a utility knife to break away the glue. 4. Reattach the bottom panel. (Do not over tighten the screws or the drawer will not slide in and out easily.) 5. Insert drawer and voila! The cash will still slip behind the drawer on occasion, but it can be easily removed. * I completely recognize that it shouldn't be necessary to alter a toy just so it functions properly. Hape owes me 10 minutes of my life back! ... show more

My 2 1/2 year old girl loves this. We received this within two days of ordering through Prime and she was so excited to open the box. I saw some reviews about the money getting stuck inside the register, that doesn't seem like it will be an issue. (Granted she's only had this for about 3 hours now, I'll update in a week or so) I tend to lead toward simple, more natural toys that actually engage my child's imagination! That being said, I love the quality and design of this toy. She loves it, and I love that it pairs well with our natural/modern decor, so I don't need to hide it in a basket when not in use! I would recommend this particular cash register above any corny lights and sounds plastic alternatives. Will definitely be a go-to for future birthday gifts (for friend's kids) as well. ... show more
