The chess board itself looks nice. Not four hundred dollars nice but nice. The Chess pieces, however have poor detail look like they are low quality and the paint is already flaking off. I haven't even used it yet. Pretty ridiculous considering the price. You can find a much better quality chess set for the price of this one. I will definitely be returning this item. This is a display board and chess set. The board opens up to a storage area with places for all the chess pieces, and this does have a latch. But the board is over ten pounds and bulky at 15 x 15 inches and 3 inch thick So it will need a surface of larger size to set up on. I will have it on a 20 by 20 glass top table ( in process of completing) The fit up of the wood and materials and wood colors and patterning is excellent, as is the finish. Smooth and clear, and another reason to not move around and mar. But strong enough to feel safe playing a game on it. The pieces have felted bottoms and are formed well, without any seems or other indication of the process used. As others have noted, the silver and darker gold colors do not provide much contrast, a brighter gold color would be better (see picture of side by side kings on board surface) but a game can be played without confusion The kings are tallest pieces and are are a bit over 2 1/2 inch and 3/4 diameter base. Pawns are a bit over 1 1/2 inch’s tall, other pieces vary around 2 inches. All bases about the same diameter ... show more

This set is beautiful, I was so relieved when I opened it, to see the quality and beauty. My eyes aren't the best so I have to really strain to see the difference between the silver and gold pieces but got through a game with ease. Very happy with this stunning set.

The only thing I didn't like was the playing pieces do not stay securely in place inside box. If you carry it by the handle all the pieces end up in a mess on the bottom. I've purchased a piece of foam to set on top before closing the lid and that helped.
