  • Emotional, heartwrenching action romance
One of my favorite otome games, but it's not for everyone; there's actually not that much romance. This is more of a tragic historical action. I love these kinds of poignant, emotionally moving stories so 10/10 for me. This is part 1 of 2; the story continues in Hakuoki Edo Blossoms so you will need to get that to see the whole story. ... show more

  • Great Game but Misrepresented
The Hakuoki series is new to me, I first heard the name of the series when the PSP game (Fleeting Blossom) went on sale in the PSN store. Upon looking up the game for more details I discovered this newly enhanced version of the game that boasted more content. Naturally I decided to hold out for this version of the game. Unfortunately nowhere on Amazon or the game’s own website does it state that this is “PART 1” of the original game. Even being brand new to the series it was painfully obvious that this game was missing something. As a result I got Fleeting Blossom so I could compare the games. This actually allowed me to appreciate what this game had to offer. The graphical cleanup and the overall improved performance of Kyoto Winds should be a given where it is not simply a port onto the Vita. Nevertheless these improvements are worth mentioning. Compared to Fleeting Blossom this game has cleaner graphics that are simply more appealing to the eye. The text is cleaner looking as well which makes it less painful to read. The highlighted encyclopedia entries in the text were switched from red to purple, a small change but positive nonetheless. Encyclopedia entries are also now a breeze to read if you wish to read them all as you only have to hit the directional pad to be instantly brought to the entry. Kyoto Winds overall runs significantly faster (Loads, Saves, and Opening of Menus). As advertised Kyoto Winds has tons of content. Most of the content, if not all, serves to flesh out characters more and makes the relationships more interesting. The added content for the Kazama route for example is executed so well that it is on the verge of being better in its incomplete form than in the original. The choices that you make in series seemed to always carry some meaning, but the new dialogue and scenes make your choices seem all the more important. The setup that Kyoto Winds provides gives a “Part 2” the potential to go so much further than the original game. One big fault that can be found in this game is the translation errors and typographical errors. Honestly you would be hard-pressed to find a visual novel that does not have this present at least once. With the amount of text that has to be translated it is understandable why this occurs in these games. Nonetheless, the mistakes in this game can be quite jarring. At this time I have not played a game with more occurrences of errors. These errors are honestly more frustrating than anything. They are easily overcome. At this point I do not think it is particularly news that Kyoto Wind’s biggest fault is that it is an incomplete game. This game stops right at the middle of story that Fleeting Blossom provided. I do not necessarily have a problem with this “Part 1,” “Part 2” game release plan. In my opinion this game honestly offers plenty of content that I could side with it being justified (obviously I would like one complete game though). The biggest issue with this release is that this game does not advertise itself as being a “Part 1” anywhere. There should being something in the game that signifies that there is a plan to provide more, even if it is something lazy like “To be continued” at the end of each route. Given that this game is incomplete I feel it is impossible for me to give it a perfect 5/5. Assuming that this game does get its “Part 2” and it is localized I want to give a score that is a little more lenient to the cliffhanger ending. Judging it as 50% of a total story I feel that this game/story is superb. It improves on the existing content and I have no reason to not believe that it will continue to turn out well based on what was presented. Breakdown Pros - Graphical/Performance Improvements - Tons of Added Content Cons - Translations Errors, Typographical Errors - Misrepresentation of What Consumers Would Actually Receive (It is 50% of a Total Story) Who Should Get This Game? As someone who is new to this series, I advise against this being the first version you play. At this time in the US the original (Fleeting Blossom on PSP) is available in the PSN store to play on your Vita. If you enjoy that game then give this game a try. It provides tons of additional content that I think any fan would enjoy. Any fan of the Hakuoki series should give this game a try, provided that they are alright with having only 50% of the game in this time. ... show more

  • Romance tease!!
If they were honest from the start I would be satisfied. Gameplay, music and graphics improved. Love the new stories BUT IT'S ONLY HALF A STORY! Nothing like getting to the cliff hanger just for it to end. You don't even reach the romance scenes because as veterans know that comes later. Wait til they release the whole story which inevitably they will. ... show more

  • Not Worth the Price!
Great graphics, interesting story and characters (minus the protagonist, but that's normal). On the down side, I was disappointed with the overall content. The additions were nice, but not enough to justify the price. That is especially true if you played the last game. I was severely disappointed with all the endings, too. They were bland, uninspired, and made the time that I put into the game feel like a bad investment. They cut the game off where the last game started getting into some great story. I imagine they will be making another that picks up where this one ends, but that just feels wrong. I could have saved my money and just played the game I already have. It's better than this one anyway. Overall, I do not recommend this game. Not worth the price. ... show more

  • If only I had known...
I loved the very first Hakuoki game for the PSP-- I bought the collector's edition, and I spent hours and hours playing and replaying it. When I heard about this "reboot" with new character options (including Nagakura, holy cow), I pre-ordered right away. The characters of this game are diverse in personality and you really feel as though you get to know them. The narrative is INTRICATE and chock-full of history. Your choices matter-- scenes appear and disappear based on what you do, and the relationships you cultivate (which are difficult because of cultural differences between Japan and America, in my opinion...) also depend on your choices. Yes, the POV character is a giant baby with no useful skills, and playing as myself doesn't often end well. I choose to treat it as a role-playing exercise: what if I was actually a shrinking violet of a person and was in this situation? The game itself is built so much better than the original, because there are convenience options that weren't there before. There's a progress meter so you can see how your choices impact relationships. There's a rewind option so you can go back and redo your choices. There is Shinpachi Nagakura, romanceable after years of waiting with fingers crossed. You can guess which route I played first. However, for anyone who doesn't know, this game is part one of two. The game's packaging makes no mention of this, and I only found out by reading reviews online... after I played to the end of the disc and was shocked that the story cut off there. The original complete stories of Hakuoki are not contained on this disc, and the "new" characters only get one chapter past the split point. The game stops in the middle of the narrative, which is very unsatisfying. If the developers had been better about advertising this, I would feel better. As it is, I feel like I've been tricked. There's no information about when part 2 will come out, and it's my fear that the game will never be continued (or localized) if sales aren't good. Idea Factory's website is remarkably close-lipped about the fact that Kyoto Winds doesn't tell a complete story, and makes no mention of a second part as of this review. I think splitting the game so sneakily was a really poor decision on the developer's part-- I wouldn't have bought part 1 now if I knew I would be waiting on another part to see the ending. The characters and story are fully worth your time, and if part 2 ever does arrive, I'll let myself be exploited and buy it so I can finally see the ending. That said, if you like the premise but can't stand the cliffhanger, track down a copy of Demon of the Fleeting Blossom and see how (some of) the stories end up. ... show more
