  • this thing feels sturdy but the handle is a little fat and rough
I've only used it once so far but a few things struck me right away. It felt substantial and definitely did the job of raking the dirt carefully around newly planted flowers and also moving larger piles of dirt away from the borders. However, I don't do much gardening and my hands are tender, and the handle did feel rough, particularly where those two rings are etched into the handle--the top ring rubbed on the bottom of my hand. I remember thinking that either I needed to sand the handle smoother or I should use a glove when I use this tool. My hands are small and this handle felt fat and featureless (other than those two raspy rings). I would've preferred to have a bit of a "waist" on the handle to help my grip hold on. Perhaps I would have been happier with a rubber or silicone coated handle, although that probably wouldn't last as long in our Northern California heat as this plain wooden one will. I also am intrinsically charmed by the idea of using Japanese tools in my garden, as if some of their centuries-old skill and wisdom might somehow magically transfer to me. I don't regret the purchase but I do wish I could modify the handle ... show more

  • Great piece but very short

  • One serious garden tool!
Given the heavy clay soil that is loaded with rocks in the mountains of Northwestern Maryland, I unfortunately go through a lot of garden tools. So far this one really does the job and is durable.

  • The best hand claw out there.
This has more tines than any other garden claw or cultivator out there, so it is very efficient at weeding. I am nervous about using a lot of poisonous chemicals in my yard with children and pets playing in the yard all the time, so I try to minimize the amount of toxic chemicals I use in my South Florida yard (re: year-round growing season!!!). Others reviews complain about the sort handle, but to me it it's a plus because it's like it's a part of your arm. This cuts down weeding time to a fraction of the time it used to take me. ... show more

  • Outstanding HACHIEMON Japanese Hand Garden Cultivator!
I purchased this hand cultivator to work on my flower and rose beds. The tool let's me sit down and really inspect how the plant is doing up close. It is easier on my back than using the long handled cultivator as well. I incorporate compost into the soil with ease with this tool. It is well balanced, heavy duty and works very efficiently. The five tines are heavy steel approx. 1/4" diameter and very strong. It comes somewhat sharpened but I took a file and made them even sharper with a few strokes on each. I'm very pleased with my purchase and love this tool. If taken care of (waxed and oiled and put away), it should last a lifetime. ... show more

  • Now THIS is a gardening tool!
I got this to use on an insidious type of clover that has taken over my strawberry bed. And it really works! You can dig it deep enough to really get to the roots of weeds. The handle is sturdy and big enough around to grip easily. The points on the tines are sharp so they can be pushed into hard, dry ground. I love this thing and wish I could get one with a longer handle for different garden beds. ... show more
