Description

In his piano works especially, Erik Satie (1866–1925) was a witty musical caricaturist. The eccentric French composer loved to satirize academic rules in general and the impressionistic titles of Debussy's compositions in particular, giving his own works such surrealistic names as Pieces in Pear Form and Dried Embryos, and annotating them with equally bizarre musical directions: "Tres 'neuf heures du matin" (Very "nine in the morning"), "Corpulentus" (Corpulent), and so on. His comic spirit is equally embodied in the music itself, as this delightful selection of seventeen piano works amply proves. They are as spare, lively, and capricious as they are hauntingly melodic. In addition to the well-known Gymnopédies and Gnossiennes, the pieces reproduced here include Sarabandes, Pièces froides, Poudre d'or, En habit de cheval, Morceaux en forme de poire, Embryons desséchés, Aperçus désagreables, Descriptions automatiques, and more. This volume, the largest collection of Satie's piano works yet published, has been reprinted on fine-quality paper from authoritative original editions, and sturdily bound to provide you a lifetime of study and enjoyment. In its pages are some of the most original and appealing achievements of a turbulent era in music, compositions that influenced such modern masters as Ravel, Milhaud, and Poulenc. Read more

  • I have enjoyed the music of Erik Satie for many years
This book is a kick! I have enjoyed the music of Erik Satie for many years, and truly appreciate the commentary he make to accompany so many of the pieces. The printing of the music is clean and clear on the pages, easy to read. Some of the pieces, the more familiar ones, I have duplicated in other volumes, but I was delighted to discover pieces that I have heard of before, but never seen. Great fun for me and my students who enjoy the challenge of reading new material. ... show more

  • Fantastic!
Great edition of all of Satie's most important piano works. I love the gymnopedies and gnossiennes of course, but the other pieces are very good too if you enjoy the impressionist style. The book is thick, but sits on my pianos music stand nicely thanks to its sewn binding. The pages are in a nice tan that won't make your eyes want to scream like the common black on bright white sheet music. I also like the texture of the music, it is very smooth and easy to write on. One of my favorite piano collections, a must have if you like Satie's works. ... show more

  • Great selection of songs
Great selection of songs. Only negative is that it is not comb bound it is bound like a normal book which makes it difficult to keep open while playing.

  • A wonderful way to experience a composer's work
I've heard Satie's Gnossiennes from time to time over the years but didn't take the opportunity to look to purchase it. This edition has the first three of his Gnossiennes as well as some of his other works. I haven't played them all but the Gnossiennes and the Embryons Desseches are my favourites so far. The music isn't difficult to play as the fingering falls into place in this edition. ... show more

  • Good Memory Needed!
I’m a very big fan of Saties works so I was happy to see the abundance of pieces in here. There are many complaints that the large font causes unnecessary page turns but I memorize things after playing 2 or 3 times so it’s not a major issue for me. If you rely heavily on the music to play, I wouldn’t recommend this for you. However, I strongly disagree with complaints of no measure markers for some of the pieces. It was Satie’s intention that these pieces be played more freely and so I find that, without the restrictions of measures, it’s easier to play as intended. ... show more

  • Yeah, great collection and print quality
For the price, as a student, I love the collection, and it contains all the wel known pieces to learn..so yes, Gymnopedies 1 through 3 are available on CDs, which helps to learn about tempo. The print is great too! Highly recommend for the value.

  • The Ballet of a Genius
Erik Satie is a auteur and this collection of his work is an amalgam of his genius. The pieces are uniquely notated and composed, and are accessible to even the beginner, particularly the Gymnopedies. Deserves a place in any pianist's library.
