I wanted to top dress my lawn this summer with sand and a key to a successful top dressing is getting a good aeration before doing it. This allows the dirt to be broken up a bit, for sand to get down into the holes, and helps create better drainage and overall grass/root health - as well as a smooth golf course looking yard. I didnt want to splurge on a big mechanical aeration machine as that felt like overkill - this was perfect and exactly what i needed. Putting it together was simple only requiring a couple of snaps and a couple of bolts and I was ready to go. Using it is as easy as walking your yard or using a lawn mower. You just push it over the lawn and let the sharp spikes poke into the ground creating the holes. I did this relatively quickly over my entire yard and got the effect i was looking for. The aerator is light and very easy to push. Going over my yard created the holes for me to do my top dressing allowing my lawn to breathe and achieve proper drainage. Great piece of inexpensive lawn equipment to help me achieve the lawn my neighbors will be jealous of.

I have real hard red dirt and it doesn't get into the ground here very well since it is so light. If you have softer soil, it will probably work a lot better, but then you probably wouldn't need it as much either.
