  • Book supposed to be in color, but is not
Format: Paperback
The book itself is pretty good for a beginner trying to learn guitar on your own. However, the book is supposed to be in color, but is not. For example, I see references to color coding when I read text, yet when I look at the referenced chord diagram, it is only in B&W. At picture for an example.

  • A way to jump start your guitar playing
Format: Paperback
Well... this is different. I have taught guitar in a classroom setting for 15 years and in private lessons before that. Most guitar books start with a basic "this is how you read music" lesson. That section is noticeably missing in this book. Rather than focusing on notes, this book focuses on tablature. The author either (1) assumes you know how to read music (a risky assumption with beginning guitar players) or that the student will pick up note reading as they go along by comparing the tabs with the standard notation that appears beneath the tabs. I was really surprised when I got to the "Your First Melody" section and saw that the melodies also used tabs. The same is true of scales, which are shown as tabs and as patterns on the neck. The notes appear, but there is no explanation of the names of the lines or spaces on the staff. I guess guitar players who really want to learn to read can do so by looking at the note lines that come with the tabs. That doesn't mean that the book avoids music theory. There are discussions about rhythms, chords, and melodies. But it's theory as a guitar player would use the term and not as a classically trained musician might expect. That said, I wish there was more emphasis on note reading. I realize most guitar players don't read (How do you get a guitar player to stop playing? Put sheet music in front of him.), but they need to know how to read if they hope to enjoy the wealth of classical pieces written for the instrument. Despite my personal preference for note reading, this book prepares beginners to start playing "real songs" very quickly, much sooner than other books that are out there. That kind of early success encourages beginning players and makes them want to continue. This kind of positive reinforcement is crucial, especially for older beginners who want to do a little more than play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, which actually happens to be the first melody presented here, notated with both notes and tabs. One more comment.... there is a LOT of text in this book. Like paragraphs and pages of information, which is quite a contrast from other beginner books that tend to use text more sparingly. A younger player might be tempted to skim through this. Older beginners will appreciate the more detailed explanations of their instrument, chords (including barre chords and power chords), scales (major, minor, and pentatonic), blues progressions, and other topics. A good book for older beginners who want to learn to play enough chords to accompany themselves as they sing or to accompany another singer relatively quickly. Recommended. ... show more

  • The Path to Guitar Playing Success
Format: Paperback
When I learned to play the guitar many years ago, I wish I would have studied a book like this. Back in those day I found a book with diagrams of basic chords and learned to strum those chords to popular songs. This book goes into much more detail. You will learn about the parts of the guitar, both acoustic and electric, strings and tuning. Not only will you learn the basic chords but also why and how minor and seventh chords are formed. The book then goes into barre chords and power chords. With every chapter, you are given practice pages to work on your chording and tempo. The second half of the book gets into scales and melodies. I never did learn to do scales and melodies on my guitar. I only learned chords and strumming. For those of you who want to advance beyond my limitations, this book will provide the means. The book even goes into slides, bends, hammer-ons and pull-offs. For the determined learner who has the self-discipline to practice, this book will lead you along the path of guitar-playing success. ... show more
