  • The best cup of coffee on the trail!
I have tried many methods of brewing coffee while backpacking/bike touring/camping, from Coghlans mini coffee filters, to french presses and beyond, and the GSI ultralight java drip is without a doubt the best solution for solo use, and I would say for small groups as well. It has been able to clip to any mug or cup I have tried, and brews a delicious cup of coffee in very little time. I would recommend experimenting at home to figure out the right amount of coffee grounds to get the desired strength (I use Cafe Bustello espresso, which requires very little grounds). This would also work for small groups of people, either one at a time, or preferably, if everyone has their own. My GSI French Press weighs 9.4 oz, and this Java Drip only weighs .4 oz, so even for a group of people to each carry their own, it is still vastly lighter than the French press, and much simpler and easier to clean. If you are like me, you will also find that you use this as much at home as out on the trail (or more, since, if you are also like me, you unfortunately have to spend a lot more time at home than on the trail). It is great for those afternoons when you just want one cup, when using a machine or a French press would be overkill. The Java Drip is very durable, as long as you pack it wisely so it doesn't get crushed the wrong way. I have probably brewed over 50 cups of coffee with this thing, and it shows no signs of wear. I would highly recommend you get this for yourself, as well as all your coffee loving friends, even if they don't camp! ... show more

  • Great product! And update after 3 uses
Well so far I tested it once at home and it works just as expected! I used it without a filter, but then the water drips through too fast and you get some weak coffee and it's tougher to rinse out afterwards. So I will be using a filter next time for easy clean up. Worked beautifully on a hydroflask so I'm sure it will work on most things. Feels pretty darn sturdy for it's low weight and size. Will be the best way I've made coffee in the backcountry I'm sure. I will be testing it out backpacking this next weekend. Will update if anything to add. Update after 3 actual uses: So I got to use it backpacking now 3 times. Packs down nice and light! Easy to use and works like a charm. Use a filter for stronger coffee! Makes some great coffee in the outdoors :) definitely recommend! ... show more

  • Easy to Use... Easy to Clean
I love good coffee. Let's be honest: that can be a tough order anywhere, especially in the back county or campground. Over the years I have tried every way and every thing: cowboy coffee; coffee presses; coffee bags, instants, and drip. I like the traditional drip coffee method the best, however it's a bit of a mess to clean up while camping; using allot of water in the process. Also, the paper filters work well at home but create waste in the back county. That's where the GSI Ultralight Java Drip enters the picture. It is simplicity at it's finest. It's light (.5 oz.) in weight and easy to pack. It does not require paper filters because it has a fine mesh bag that filters out most of the coffee. It cleans easily with little water and wash rag. It seems well made and durable. One of the really nice things about it is that the three legs can be folded flat with the bag, and it can be stored under a butane fuel canister. On top of all that, I can make a great, strong, cup of coffee with it anywhere I can boil water. It's so simple. I don't have to hold it, press it, or watch it. It fits securely on any cup or even an insulated bottle. All I have to do is add premium coffee and pour. Clean up is relatively easy. All it takes is a small amount of water and a wash rag. I would recommend it to anyone wishing to have an easy way to make a great cup of their favorite coffee, almost anywhere. ... show more

  • Simple, lightweight and effective
I ordered this as a lightweight solution for coffee on the trail when backpacking. The simple design is effective and has worked on various size cups. It’s also very easy to clean and store for the next use.

  • Perfect Backpacking Coffee Maker!
Bought this for a five day backpacking trip. This made EXCELLENT coffee every morning! One of the highlights of my day. Works so well the wife requests I make coffee at home using it (a ceramic one is now on the way). I do use it with #2 filters (both at home and on the trail), and I find that works well. Takes just a bit of practice to get the perfect slow-pour going. Highly recommend for a quality cup of coffee when away from home! ... show more

  • Lightweight gear that does it's job
Very light without feeling breakable. The recommended 4tbsp coffee to 6oz of water is excessive. Set your dose with your heart.

  • Weighs Next to Nothing, Collapsable, and Effective - Love It!
Picked up this and the GSI Outdoors Infinity Backpacker Mug, Blue before a recent backpacking trip and love it. It weighs nothing, and has a clever versatile design that will allow it to fit a range of mugs. I used regular ground coffee with this (without any paper filter) and it worked great, producing flavorful coffee quickly and without any stray grounds. It clips plenty securely and stays in place under the weight of coffee and liquid with no problems. I will probably use a slightly finer ground next time for a slower drip and stronger flavor, but that's a matter of taste. Love this coffee rig: super light, very effective, folds flat or collapses down small for easy storage, and sturdy enough for carefree coffee making on the trail. Big thumbs up. ... show more
