The Bad Review are just that...Bad reviews and by that i mean the reviews themselves are bad and should be deleted. This is a great machine. I am not going to say that one or two people here didn't receive a bad lathe but instead of writing a bad review they should have returned it and gotten another. All manufactured items suffer the occasional quality control issue. Grizzly is a name you can trust and the customer service is top notch. Plastic gears are your friends. I have seen several reviews stating that this machine is a joke because it has plastic gears. But the plastic gears are there for your benefit. If you make a mistake the gears can break instead of something more expensive. You can replace the entire gear set for around $40 so its actually a good thing. But don't worry. These gears are quite tough and won't break easy. If you do break one then you did something wrong and the gear broke to save the machine. Clean Off the factory lube and reapply your own. Oil the ways and the carriage gears. I was experiencing some binding of the carriage but a little oil later and everything was perfect. I didn't have any problems but some people have reported a loose bolt or two. Take your time and look the machine over. Grizzly provides wrenches to tighten the bolts likely to be loose as well as assemble the machine. Only minor assembly is required. If you do have a problem or a bad machine get with grizzly and they will take care of you. On a final note. I love this machine and its great for a beginner like me or even someone extremely experienced like my neighbor. He went to town on a piece of aluminum easily accomplishing 5x what i had done in 1/2 the time. As you start to use it you will discover all kinds of little extras you will wish the lathe had or convince yourself it needs. The good news is there is a big community behind this lathe and most every modification you could want and many you have not yet conceived are already done and the plans readily available. ... show more

  • Okay product, top-notch service.
I've been setting up and using the machine for about a week now. First thing: The unit ships bolted to a piece of 1/4" plywood. When mine arrived, the plywood was shattered from frequent drops, the box was in tatters, and the styrofoam was beat. The only part that was broken was the cover for the power switch, but it's taken me a few hours to pick all the styrofoam nodules and plywood chunks out of the machine. Grizzly could upgrade to 1/2" or 3/4" plywood if they were serious about delivering a working product. The tailstock is an MT2 stub! You'll either have to modify an MT2 arbor or find an MT2 stub if you'd like to use a drill chuck. The product specialists at Grizzly aren't particularly charming or helpful. Before I bought the unit, I wanted to make sure the spindle bore could accommodate 3/4" stock. He told me that the manual said it would, but that he had no way of checking. Fine, I can read the manual too - but 20mm works out to about .03" bigger than 3/4". (BTW - yes, it does take 3/4" rod just fine). Changing leadscrew gears is a little feisty. The manual only mentions one adjustment bolt - there are actually two. The plastic gears are scary to remove the first time - they're on tightly and flex. The compound only goes 30 degrees in either direction. I might be missing something, but to cut threads, I had to make a mark and go 30 degrees from 30 degrees to get a 60 degree compound angle. Might just be the way I learned to cut threads isn't compatible with their design, but the instruction manual provides no clarification. The thread dial was completely disengaged from the leadscrew when I unpacked the unit. Not a big deal to adjust, but I don't think it was knocked during shipping - I'd guess it wasn't assembled correctly at the factory. The thread dial/feed lever mechanism is also kind of junky - when it comes around to your number, it takes a real definite crank to engage it on the leadscrew. It can end up engaging halfway between numbers and do a number on your threads. Make sure you've got some distance before you hit your work piece to abort if you miss when you engage the feed lever. Get some shims for the tool post. I'd recommend getting a $6 spark plug feeler gauge and taking all the feelers out - that would be a nice way to get the tip of a 5/16" tool back up to center. The variable speed dial doesn't have any reference marks (and I think I know why). So far, the only way I've found to get consistent speeds is to watch the chips closely. All in all, it seems like I'll be able to get it working adequately eventually. I would have rather just paid the extra for a machine that worked well from the get-go. ++++++++ Addendum: After a month of setting up and using the machine and some research: The reality is that every single mini-lathe out there is made at one of a handful of plants overseas. The only difference between vendors is the level of service. I finally figured out that the 3-jaw chuck that shipped with the unit had bad runout because one of the jaws wasn't making good contact with round stock (brand new McMaster 1144 steel). The reps took the time and trouble to make it right. ... show more

  • Coolest new tool in my shop
Never had a lathe before but will never be without one again. This is a cool machine. Added a quick change tool post & wired in a digital tach ($14). Patience is the key - it just doesn't have the power to shave off massive amounts of material. Yes, arrived a bit banged up but worked ok. Bought the metal gears and roller bearings in anticipation of the plastic gears breaking but so far, and more than 100 pieces turned, still good. This is an amazing little machine for the money, once you tighten everything up a bit. ... show more

  • Good Product, Poor Packaging, Not One Horse Power
I was in the market for a bench top for small work. I had been watching the Grizzly product. When it came up at a discount and the specifications indicated One HP (1) instead of 3/4 I jumped on it. Unfortunately for me the item delivered was 3/4 hp. The packaging was undamaged however the the steady rest was shattered, the power cord was kinked and failed and the back splash shield has mangled. Please request double boxing or better packaging.Once I replaced the cord (I used a heavier gauge wire) The unit worked great. I contacted the grizzly people who would not believe the product was advertised as 1hp, so I sent them a link. I sent pictures of the damage to Grizzly who indicated they would replace the back splash shield as well as the steady rest. The UPS people wanted the packaging however the guys in the shipping trashed it as there was no visual damage to the package. The unit works well with 316 SS and delrin so far. I do recommend this product but you must request proper packaging for shipping ... show more

  • Extremely disappointed!
I am a machinist and this thing is NOT a tool its a toy. It cant even make a simple 0.010 cut the motor shuts off as soon as the tool touches the workpiece. The variations on the compound and crossfeed are not even close to accurate. And the threads are a joke even the carriage handwheel hangs. Extremely disappointed! ... show more
