This is a quality doctoral robe for faculty! Pros: very roomy, so you don't feel stuffed into a binding, slender robe (I am full-figured, so I appreciate the extra space and ease of movement); substantial fabric seems like it will last a long time; details include velvet striping on the arms with lovely binding, and a braided detail across the back; bell-sleeves with interior hidden wide cuff--it looks impressive and feels high-quality. Cons: the fabric does not breathe, so it's very warm if you are in a hot climate; no interior front button to attach the hood (separate purchase). I ordered a size too long and returned the original but immediately purchased the next shorter size, and the length is perfect. I will probably add a button inside the front to attach the hood.

I’m so happy I decided to check Amazon for my doctoral gown before I bit the bullet and paid for the graduation regalia through my university! The university has two options, the cheap version for $189, which looks like a very cheap Halloween costume or the “fine regalia” option for $750. I was worried about the quality of this gown for the price, but many positive reviews plus the free returns option made it well worth the risk, especially three months before graduation. The package arrived quickly and is an excellent quality garment. The front panels are velvet along with the chevrons on the sleeves as advertised. The gown is a heavy-weight material, much heavier than both my bachelor’s and master’s gowns that were purchased through the respective university bookstores. The sizing chart needs to be updated/more clear, I actually went to a different vendor’s site to use their sizing chart then came back to this vendor to purchase. I’m 5’9” and size 54 fits perfectly. Other reviews have mentioned the zipper being on the left, but the gown is unisex, so it isn’t a big deal. I doubt the “fine regalia” sold though the university vendors is any better quality than this garment, and definitely not worth over $600 more. Very happy with my purchase!

Our secretary failed to place my order for regalia rental. With only 9 days until the commencements, I searched locally and did not find anything for rent. I also searched the well known regalia providers, but their prices were too much and lead times too long. I really didn't want to spend a lot of money, so when I saw this robe for only $120, I was naturally skeptical. And the delivery was promised in only 2 days (thanks, Amazon Prime!) It arrived crammed in my mailbox (thanks USPS!), but no worse for its travels. The robe was sealed in plastic, which was shipped in a plastic bag. Even though the robe had been wadded up, it still maintained its pleats. There was some minor wrinkling, but those came out with my portable steamer. I am impressed with the weight and feel of the material; much more substantial than I had thought. The royal blue velvet looked and felt good. The gold piping around the velvet was very clean and did not have any frayed ends. The fit was good. I ordered the 6'3" - 6'5" length, which is a lot of material. The bottom of the robe is finished with a two-inch hem; the stitching did not show on the outside. The sleeves are lined with a nice silky material, have a nice 'poofy' bell shape and a clean, secure cushioned cuff around the wrist. I really liked how comfortable the sleeves felt. The black material is light (but not too light), and hangs very well. The material around the shoulders (forgive my lack of textiles knowledge) is thick and well sewn. The black material is gathered together to give a pleated look (like very small curtains?) all around the shoulder and back. There is a decorative rope sewn on the back from the neck to about 6 inches down the back, terminating in a black button. It looks like something you would secure your hood. I only have two requests: The zipper 'tab' is left-handed. In the US, men's zippers tabs and buttons are right-handed. I would also like to have pocket slits. Overall, I am very pleased with the quality, price and delivery time. I definitely recommend. Even if you only attend one commencement, this is a great value. I plan on using mine for all our commencements, and I expect that this will last for some time.

I just received this robe and tried it on and it is a great fit. I was really impressed with the weight of the gown. One might expect something that feels like a lighter weight gown based on the types of gowns we may have worn as high school or bachelor's grads. The felt is a nice thickness and is obviously good quality. The fabric of the gown is lighter weight, but still nice looking. I think I will be able to steam the wrinkles out and it'll look and feel great! I also have to comment on the sleeves, which have inner sleeves with cuffs at the wrist.. The inner sleeve fit my arm perfectly with no overlap at the wrist (so it's not hanging loosely). I really like the way the gown is cut and the feel of it as I had it on. The zipper was perhaps the one issue I had with the gown as I found it difficult to be able to reach down and get it started. A higher quality zipper would have been nicer, but this one will work well enough and I assume it could be changed out by a seamstress. Lastly, the price beats every other comparable gown! The prices are ridiculous for these gowns anyway and this was an excellent compromise between build quality and value. I would buy this one again and recommend it to others looking for a similar compromise.
