  • I can't believe I got a decent bass for $70 -- setup pointers in review.
Color: Black Bass 4 Straps
I can't believe I got a decent bass for $70. I bought this to learn using Rocksmith 2014 Real Tone Cable Trilingual. Rocksmith has a tuner built into it so that takes care of that. I read the other reviews that said this bass definitely needs to be setup to sound and play correctly. Sure enough, out of the box the bass was playable but my fingers got tired quickly because the action was set so high off the fret board. And there was a twangy, buzz if you strummed the string to play even moderately loud. So, I perused around Amazon and found a pretty cheap little collection of tools to get everything setup on the bass guitar correctly. The bass comes with it's own truss rod tool and bridge height adjust tool so that's taken care of. You'll need a capo to help set the truss rod, Guitar Picks Guitar Capo Quick Change Acoustic Guitar Accessories Trigger Capo Key Clamp Black With Free 6 Pcs Guitar Picks. A feeler gauge with both .015 and .022 width thickness, ABN Universal SAE and Metric Master Feeler Gauge 26-Piece Blade Tool for Measuring Gap Width / Thickness. A ruler that accurately measures between 3/32 and 4/32 of an inch (.093 - .125 of an inch), Pixnor String Action Ruler Gauge Tool for Guitar Bass . And a set of grinding files of the appropriate width to file down the fret nut saddle, ammoon Guitar Fret Nut Saddle Slot Pickguard Grinding File Group Set Luthier Repair Tool 10pcs in 1 Set. I just followed along with some online setup guides and was able to set it up on my own in about an hour and a half. For me, I found the truss rod was pretty loose. The bridge height action was set at just over 4/32's on all four strings when really just the top, 4th string needs to be at 4/32. The smaller the string the lower the action needs to be set till the bottom string is at around 3/32. I actually needed to set mine just a bit above 3/32 since it would rattle if I put it right on there. Probably some better strings would let me adjust the height for tighter tolerances. And I had to grind a good bit of material away from the fret nut saddle to bring it down to .022 of an inch. The string length also needed to be tightened just a bit to get the intonation just right. After everything got set this bass guitar turned into a really nice sounding guitarra that plays a clean, mellow note. And the string action became very quick and effortless, which my hand was much grateful of. Basically it's like from the factory it was set to just being acceptable and everything just needed those last few twists of the screws to tighten everything up to right where it needed to be. Now I'm plucking away to songs on Rocksmith and having a great ole' time. It takes a little bit of work to get it there, but once it's setup properly this guitar is a tremendous value. ... show more

  • Better than a $70 bass deserves to be
Color: Black Bass 4 Straps
Based on the previous review I knew this would take some tweaking to make it play well. Out of the box, the truss rod nut was fully tightened giving the neck some serious back bow, so as a result every note you played had fret buzz. I backed off the truss rod to give it the proper relief using the included allen wrench. The neck also had to be shimmed to achieve the right neck angle. Both of these adjustments took a grand total of about 10 minutes, and now this thing plays better than most $200 basses. Echoing the previous review, this thing is light as a feather and perfectly balanced... no neck dive on this one. The included accessories are just OK, but really that's to be expected with any "package deal". They will at least get you started with everything that's included. This bass plays so well, I probably will upgrade the pickup soon, although the stock one is fine, I would just like to hear it with some Seymour Duncan's in it. Definitely a great beginner bass as long as you or someone you know, knows how to do a proper setup, and a good backup bass for those who already have their primary, and are looking for something inexpensive, but not junk. UPDATE 11/14/16 So I ordered a set of Seymour Duncan Quarter Pound P-Bass pickups https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002GKYZI/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1, and took ten minutes to install, and were a perfect fit. This bass is now REALLY good, and for $70 for the stock bass and $60 for a tremendous pick up upgrade, I have a real sleeper of a bass for $130. Really enjoyable to play and went from sounding ok to amazing. Just wanted to report back that the pickguard handles aftermarket pickups well without modification. ... show more

  • Excellent Value
Color: Blue Bass 4 Straps
At such a low price, you might remember that old adage "you get what you pay for." It holds true for this bass, as several shortcuts were taken in production. Let's talk about those shortcuts for a moment. The fretboard is rosewood but is a laminate, not a solid piece of wood. Still I had no problem with it and my fingers felt fine. The gears for the machine heads (AKA the tuning knobs) are exposed on the back of the head. However the bass stayed reliably in tune. The action (the height of the string from the fretboard) was extremely high. But they do include a hex key to adjust the heigh of the bridge, which I did immediately. The bass is very top heavy. When standing and playing, you'll need to exert some effort to hold it level. A higher quality instrument will be evenly weighted. Finally, the bag had some pretty oily smelling off-gassing. This is to be expected for something made of vinyl and the odor will dissipate in a few days. The bag itself is not padded, but does keep the bass protected from dust and provides a convenient way to carry it to practice and gigs. Even with all these caveats, I think the bass is an excellent value. It is capable of producing strong, rich tones and is a joy to play. The pickups do an excellent job and the volume and tone knobs feel solid. The bass looks great and so will you when you play. ... show more

  • Gorgeous, and great for price
Color: Blue Bass 4 Straps
I am an avid (though amateur) musician. I play a variety of stringed instruments (violin, acoustic guitar, uklele, and dulcimer) and a few others as well. I ordered this electric bass on a whim, and was happily surprised when it arrived. The packaging was not up to par- there was not much to cushion the instrument and I was worried I would open the package only to find the instrument broken. However, it was fully intact and beauifully- glossy, and of a good weight. It came with everything in the description- the cords and picks were inside of the case. Here’s a rundown on the accessories: Picks- standard, run of the mill, a nice bonus Strap- thin, and has the tendency to fall off of bass. I usually play while sitting, so its not much of an issue, but I would recommend buying a higher quality one if you want to perform with this bass Cords- sturdy, good quality Bag- not padded, thin plastic, lightweight, good for transportation Now, as many others have said, the wood is soft and will dent easily. For me, this wasn’t too much of a problem, as I intend to keep it inside (no traveling or anything with it). If you would want to travel, I’d suggest investing in a case with a little more padding. The head of bass is unfinished, but is a nice smooth wood. I ordered the blue color, but the blue doesn’t show up too much. It is a gorgeous instrument, however. It was incredibly easy to set up, and I was playing within twenty minutes. Highly recommend as a gift or for a beginner ... show more

  • Really ?!?!?!?! BUY THIS NOW!
Color: Black Bass 4 Straps
I was quite surprised by the quality of this, so called, cheap-o no name bass. It did not suffer from the usual fret wire sharpness-Thanks! The neck had a slight bow-back which resulted in some buzzing about midpoint on the neck. After a truss rod adjustment this was fixed. The action is now amazing! The intonation was close out of the box. A few strings were ever so slightly sharp but it was subtle. I Love the thinness of the neck - finger to thumb. It's easy to play. My conclusion? I am recommending a strong buy. This bass is badass for the money. If you're a beginner, or you just need a bass. Get it while you can because you won't see prices like these for long. UPDATE: I decided to keep the original strings on because I didn't feel changing them would improve he bass at this time. My only Modification was adding strap-locks. ... show more

  • For the price, you'd be surprised, but there is one small issue.
Color: Blue Bass 4 Straps
This bass has helped me get into the world of music, and that alone was well worth it. I bought it with the intent of playing it for a few months and buy a different bass. But I'm still playing this one, with the right amp, pedals, and boards, this thing sounds sick. It hold a tune pretty good and produces a nice tone. I ended up putting BEAD strings on it to fit my style better and seems to be holding up alright, but there's one problem. One day when I plugged it in for a session and started tuning, I noticed my B string was extremely low. When I tried tuning it up, it popped back down. I looked and the gear that connects the tuning key to the post was stripped really badly, and one of the teeth on the gear on the E string was torn off. I was able to fix the issue by taking the tring off, turning the post 180° and re-tuning. It's probably my fault for putting a heavier string on the bass, but it's still saddening nonetheless. I will buy me a proper 5 string soon, but all in all, pretty good. ... show more

  • 'Cause I like to learn how to fix my own stuff
Color: Black Bass 4 Straps
I purchased it as a beater guitar based on the other reviews and even did all the suggested upgrades to the pickups, electronics, copper shielding, strings, and bridge. Yep... Amazon got another $90 worth of parts out of me. Nope... actually $120 with a bag. Why? 'Cause I like to learn how to fix my own stuff. What did I learn? A cheap bass is, and always will be, a cheap bass. You get what you pay for. What a shock! ;-) B.T.W. Unlike other reviews state this little jewel nose dives like Olympic high diver. It would take a small brick to get it level because the body is made of something lighter than air, maybe compressed dust?. ;-) The strap is laughable and too short unless you're a small child (fetus maybe), the cable is ultra cheap and should be tossed immediately, and the bag is most likely made out of matter but I expect it to change state from a solid to gas at any moment. The neck absolutely requires you adjust it 'cause it's pretty much a banana, the action is so out of wack the strings either buzzed or were too high. If you buy this you WILL learn all about how to set up a guitar... whether you want to or not. ;-) (Allen nuts ARE provided in the kit.) It's not unplayable by any means and isn't bad if you're on an extreme budget and need a bass like object of some sort but I'd suggest you save your pennies and buy a Squier Affinity bass from Amazon rather than putting any money and time into an inexpensive bass. I could have bought an Affinity and had a much better bass that this jewel could ever be out of the box with all the money and time spent on all the upgrades. (Actually, I finally did so I do have first hand knowledge about the quality differences.) • Its not a Fender, but good enough. Its not a Fender, but good enough.
Color: Black Bass 4 Straps
Update 2, July 22, 2021 The bass was working great up to this point until the volume knob came loose and quit working. I assumed a pulled wire so i took it into a guitar shop to have them look it over. The guy took the pick guard off and sure enough a pulled wire. So i told him to go ahead and fix it since i was only being charged $10 to do the work. While he did the work the guy told me two in and out wires had been soldered together that shouldnt have been and he was dumbfounded at how the bass was able to work and play through an amp. He proceeded to unsolder all the wires and re-solder the way they should have been which if you read my original review might have been the screaming noise through the jack port i had gotten right out of the box...maybe, dont know. Sounds like manufacturing this bass wasnt top notch. While at the shop i asked the guy to also go ahead and put brand new slinky eddie ball roundwound strings on (because i was still using the strings that came on the bass out of the box). While doing that the tuning keys stripped out at the gears on the back and he ended up breaking a string while trying to tune. He was never able to get the tuning keys to work again. Again another problem that was put of the box from my original review. So the fix of course would be new keys at $40, $10 for the soldering fix, he also gave me an option where hed go through the bass, adjust the bridge, the neck rod and install everything for 80$ coupled with new strings at 40$, everything wouldve come in at $170. To me if you were a beginner And you had no idea how to adjust these things and had no idea how to do any of this this bass wouldve been a total loss. Noway i would pay that to fix a $90 bass. No way. That aside, i could save the $80 by doing the install and adjusting myself, but still at $54 with tax to fix this bass is a pretty hefty. At this point if im gonna spend 170$ i decided im gonna strip it and repaint it and install genuine parts to make it fun. I made it about a year on this bass....you get what you pay for......your choice. Hope this review helps... Update1: Its been over a month and i have to say this little bass is fun. The neck has stayed pretty well dialed. It hasnt really fallen out of tune since the initial tuning. The keys havnt stripped since the initial tune. The crack hasnt gotten bigger. Doesnt seem to be any issue. The plug port still screams if i move the cord at all. I play sitting down so it isnt too much of an issue for me. Im raising my review to 4 stars from 3. Great starter bass... Original review: Ive played bass for many years and have had several bass'. Im not an expert at picking quality, but i do know a good bass when i play one. That being said, i got this bass for a friend whose bass "grew legs and walked off the stage" They do gigs every week with rotating members. The bass they used was essentially used as a "house" bass for anyone to play. So their need for an expensive bass was not required (and with the possibility of it to get stolen again). So, again, i ordered this bass, got it in, and played it before i gave it to her. I read reviews before i ordered. Seemed to have decent reviews. So it seemed like a good choice. First, i read several reviews where people have said that the headstock needed to be adjusted for string vibration and noises across the frets. I didnt have this problem. The bass came in pretty well dialed. I didnt have to adjust anything on it except, of course, tuning the strings. The strings are pretty mediocre. Theres not much say about them. They do feel rather smooth, but nothing special. The pickups are pretty cheap. Sound isnt as crisp as a set of Seymore Duncans. It actually sounds pretty flat to the ear. With a seasoned ear you can tell that, but for the beginner its just fine. You can tell its a bass guitar. It is relatively clear, but not as crisp as an expensive bass. Now for some issues i had: I plugged the bass in for the first time and had some feedback and screams from the plug port through my amp. I unplugged and plugged back in several times and the issue eventually seemed to fix itself. Not sure if something inside the plug port was loose or what, but it hasnt done it since. While tuning the strings the tuning keys stripped several times. And no i was not overtightening the strings. I did eventually get it in tune and so far no problems with it falling out of tune due to the keys. When i got the bass in my headstock had a pretty gnarly crack in it (see pic). It doesnt seem to be a deep crack but it is definitely a crack and im not sure what the effects of that will be over the long run. Other than that. The bass plays pretty decent no complaints on actually being able to play and make songs a reality. For the money id say its an ok buy. For a beginner its just fine, itll get you from A to B in learning. Or in my situation needed it to fill a need to get the job done. ... show more
