  • Wow! Really good (for the price)
Style: Two-Sided Tire Tread Depth Gauge
All my life I've used the penny method ("if you can't see the top of Abe's head, you need new tires"). And it worked just fine. Only problem was, on rear tires where you can't crank the wheels to display the entire tread, it was sometimes hard to get accurate readings on the INSIDE edge. Also, it only told you if your tires were OK, not how much tread you had left. So I decided to get a gauge. I found many. Some were pricey...I don't need a gauge THAT badly. These Godeson gauges were very inexpensive, and the problems described in the 1- and 2-star ratings seemed minor. Besides, I thought it would be nice to have two -- one in my shop, one in my tool-box...I decided to give them a try. They arrived today. I got the ones showing both MM and 32nds of an inch. They are much better than I expected. As others have noted, the calibration was just a bit off. That is, with the gauge pressed down on a hard, flat surface, they both read a fraction above zero, both by about 1/64". To get them to read zero, I had to grind a bit off the ends of the blades on a diamond sharpening stone -- I had to be careful not to grind off too much. Once the zero settings were achieved (three minutes to do both), I tested their readings, using a good caliper, for various depths from an eighth of an inch up to about half an inch. All readings matched the calipers within a couple thousandths of an inch. OK, I'm a perfectionist. Please understand, I didn't have to do any modification to these gauges: RIGHT OUT OF THE PACKAGE, they would have given me readings accurate to 1/64th of an inch. Who really needs better than that? As to their ability to hold a reading, they both have some sort of damping in the barrel to keep the blade held in place. I have no way of knowing if this will be true...they could loosen up in time. If they do, I'll find a way to tighten them up, shouldn't be rocket surgery. And if needed, I can buy two more for about the price of a caramel frappuccino. ... show more

  • tire tread depth gauge works fine
Style: Digital Tire Tread Depth Gauge
tread depth gauge works fine. reads out in either mm or inches, could be better if read out in 1/32" units.

  • Great to have
Style: Digital Tire Tread Depth Gauge
Great to have in your car. So you can check yourself your tire tread. Instead asking a shop to check. You can do it yourself.

  • Nice accurate tire tread gauge
Style: Two-Sided Tire Tread Depth Gauge
Very easy to use and check tire tread thickness. They provided an accurate rating so I knew when to get new tires. Easy to store in the car, small size to for in glove box.

  • You get what you pay for.
Style: Digital Tire Tread Depth Gauge
The media could not be loaded. The measuring strip is sloppy within the slot and leads to inconsistent reading, reducing accuracy (SEE ATTACHED VIDEO). Just a tap towards one side and the measurement can be off by as much as 0.10mm, so the resolution of 0.01mm is just marketing. Expect no more than +/-0.1mm accuracy from this instrument. I wish the base where the pin sticks out was wider on all sides so it doesn't teeter totter while I try to perform a consistent measurement. Ideally, one should measure tread depth with the pin as perpendicular to the tire as possible, so a wider base would help guarantee that. I also wish there was a way to lock/fix the strip in place after a measurement so if I bump the strip, I don't have to remeasure again. Digital calipers solve this problem with a lock screw. This is speaking from experience of using this in a narrow wheel well of a sedan, where there is only just enough of a gap to insert this tool between the tire and wheel well. I frequently bumped the tool against the wheel well edge and had to remeasure because I lost confidence in the measurement. All that being said... I just needed a tool that can measure the tires in situ (though my point becomes moot for the front tires because you can just turn them out to get better access to the sipes). The typical recommendation is to rotate tires every 5,000 to 7,500 miles, but I wanted to verify just how much tread difference accumulates on my vehicle before a rotation is due. However, I'll be keeping this tool because it's a cheap and a neat little tool to have. Definitely more accurate than my finger. You just can't expect high accuracy at this price range, but maybe most people aren't looking for high accuracy like me. ... show more
