  • Chess Renaissance on the Go: The Chessnut Ultimate Portable Travel Electronic Chessboard
Color: Orange
Note: Do not just power on the board and try to connect via Bluetooth to Android as in my case. Install the Chessnut Android App first, the new one, yes free, then connect using the app and everything works flawlessly. My journey with chess has taken me from intense park games in the heart of NYC to cherished matches with my now 12-year-old daughter. We even ventured into the realm of AI with a high-end Millenium board, a purchase that, in hindsight, felt more like an exercise in frustration than enjoyment due to its exorbitant cost and convoluted online connectivity. Enter the Chessnut Ultimate Portable Travel Electronic Chessboard, a breath of fresh air that has truly revolutionized my on-the-go chess experience. For roughly half the price of my previous "premium" board, the Chessnut offers a seamless and truly portable solution. The freedom to play online via a plethora of free Android chess apps, including the Chessnut's own updated version, without the need for additional costly modems or subscriptions, is a game-changer. The inclusion of a built-in battery eliminates the anxiety of finding power outlets, making impromptu games in the park with my daughter a genuine pleasure. The thoughtful addition of a sturdy carrying case with a dedicated zippered pouch for the magnetic pieces and even extra felt pads speaks volumes about the attention to detail. The magnetic adhesion of the pieces is strong enough to withstand minor bumps and tilts up to about 40 degrees, a practical feature for travel and outdoor play. And for those crucial endgame scenarios, the inclusion of two extra queens is a welcome touch. While I often rely on the Lichess app on my phone for quick solo games, the Chessnut board's versatility in connecting to various platforms is impressive. I've personally tested it with the Chessnut Android app via Bluetooth, and the connection has been smooth and reliable. The option to connect to other popular apps like WhitePawn and Chess.com, as well as the ability to play via PC using either Bluetooth or the included USB-C to USB-A cable, further enhances its appeal. The board itself boasts a sleek and thin design, feeling well-constructed and durable. I wholeheartedly recommend the Chessnut Ultimate Portable Travel Electronic Chessboard. It's an exceptional value for avid chess players, a fantastic tool for kids involved in chess competitions or school clubs, and a significant upgrade for anyone looking to enhance their chess experience. Learning from my past purchase, I can confidently say that this Chessnut set is the one I wish I had discovered first. Now, I have the best of both worlds: a dedicated AI board at home and this incredibly convenient and feature-rich set for countless chess adventures with my daughter, wherever we may roam. The rubberized feet and button surfaces are a nice touch, and while the plastic pieces are lightweight, they possess a quality feel that belies their material. This is a truly well-thought-out and enjoyable piece of chess technology. I want to add that remember you can still use this board offline with a real opponent and without having to power it on. Or use the app and play against AI and the AI opponent engines at the moment in the Chessnut app are Maia, Stockfish, and LcO. Each AI engine, also includes Standard, Chess 960, and board editor option. Each engine can also be optimized for more advanced difficulty or easier settings, making it perfect for newcomers or veterans. ... show more

  • Impressive travel board
Color: Grey
This Chessnut Go Ultimate Portable Travel Electronic Chessboard (Grey) is a great mobile version of the Chessnut Chessboards. The board is ultra thin and small, though still very rugged with enough board space to be easily played. The included pieces (with extra queens) are well made, a nice weight, and attach magnetically to the board. The magnets are strong enough that I can tilt the board to about a 20 degree angle before the pieces start to slide off, making it a great option for air or train travel. The board synced effortlessly with the Android Chessnut app on two different models of Samsung phones. I also tested it with a few of the marketplace apps that support the board, and all of them worked well; they were able to read the movements on the board and communicate with it to highlight the piece position lights. My only complaint with the Chessnut app is that it doesn’t have a tutorial for chess basics, which would’ve been nice for those new to chess or as a refresher for people like me who haven’t played in years. The battery life also seems to be really good. In an hour’s worth of steady play time, it only depleted 5%. The included case was also surprisingly nice and designed well. It has a hard external shell to protect the board, a removable pocket for the pieces on one side, and a built-in pocket on the other side to hold the board. I would’ve preferred separate pockets to keep the pieces organized by color, as the included plastic packing sleeves don’t feel as if they’ll last long with steady use. Overall, this is a great board. Despite its $200 price tag, I think it’s well worth getting. My daughters and I are already enjoying it regularly and learning a lot. ... show more

  • Excellent
Color: Orange
Really impressive. About a year ago I got the chance to test the beautiful Chessnut Air, a stunning wooden set made by the same company, so when I was offered the Go Ultimate for a test I jumped at the chance. This is a much more lightweight board than the Air, which is ideal as a permanent fixture on your coffee table. The Go Ultimate is perfectly designed for tossing in a bag and taking on the road. It weighs virtually nothing compared to the Air. It's incredibly thin - so thin that it seems crazy that all the electronic guts fit inside - and it comes with a handy padded carry case. Ideal for travel. I've only been playing for a few days, but so far the computer stacks up very well against the Air. The board connects easily to my phone through the app, and the ELO difficulty levels seem accurate. I'm excited to try a real life competitor through the app as soon as I can find the time. The quality of the board is excellent. Despite its extreme slim profile and light weight it feels sturdy and well built, and the magnetic attachment of the pieces is strong. I'm very impressed with everything I've tried from this brand. It's the real deal. ... show more
