The Switchblade MIPS was created for hard charging descents and the demands of elite enduro racing. P.O.V. Plus visor and Roc Loc Air DH fit system that features a bumper around the dial to prevent accidental adjustments in case your helmet contacts your backpack or neck brace. The chinbar is engineered to help manage impact energies, and is easy to install or remove in seconds. • I haven't crashed with it yet, so first impressions
First impressions, Giro needs to make this in XL. The L fits a little too snugly even after I removed some of the padding around the jaw, which was required to avoid ripping my ears off to pull the helmet on/off. Probably wouldn't have bought it from the LBS if they had actually stocked it given that fact. Its also starts to fatigue my neck pretty quickly given its a little over 2 lbs. The visor blocks my the view unless its pushed entirely up and out of the way, making it pointless. On the plus side its noticeably more robust than any of my other bike helmets and I have no fear that it will protect my head the next time I play superman. The price tag also seems a bit extreme across the board for full face bike helmets. The MIPS tax also seem less than ideal. Either its safe and everyone should be using it, or its not. In my case over the past ~20 years of mountain biking I've had a half dozen or so incidents where I've found myself face planting into the terrain, nothing major but enough that this last time of walking around with road rash on my face convinced me that I should probably get a more serious helmet despite the fact that much of what I ride is classified closer to cross country than downhill. Even so, it doesn't take much speed/slope and inconveniently placed rocks to find oneself unexpectedly being tossed off the bike particularly in places which seem fairly "safe". Most of the time, no big deal, but it only takes one bad one. In my case something like the Bell Super Air might have been more appropriate (more protection than a scull cap, still light/breezy) but my last couple helmets have been giro and I've grown to trust that they work as advertised so the ~10 ounce penalty didn't seem unreasonable to avoid a broken nose/jaw/whatever. I will update this review after I crash it, or replace it. ... show more
