  • good upgrade vs GTX 460
A big, quiet graphics card. This 960 Windforce replaced my Gigabyte GTX460 and benchmarks substantially higher, at lower power draw. Besides the improved performance and more modern outputs, the big win for me is Gigabyte's cooling. The large fans run quietly in the first place (much quieter than my case and CPU fans). But once Nvidia drivers are installed, the fans spin down until needed, prolonging their life and keeping the unit effectively silent. The 960 is positioned towards the bottom of the Nvidia 900 desktop series, but it turns in respectable performance numbers. Using the free 3dMark benchmarking tool (available also on Steam as the 3dMark "demo"), this 960 scored nearly 3x as high as the 460 on the most challenging test ("Firestrike"), more than 2x as high on the next most intense test ("Sky Diver"), and more modest improvements on the CloudGate (32%) and Icestorm (14%) tests. That's compared to my old Gigabyte GV-N460OC-1GI (1Gb overclock model). Those results are with no other changes, running on Windows 7, on my ~5 year old i5-based game rig. It's likely a newer system (with PCIe 3.x and faster main memory) would have shown an even more marked improvement. It's a hefty card, with a metal cover over the "back" of the board (the side without fans), which makes handling it easier, and looks cool. In a standard ATX tower case installation, the fans face the bottom of the case. The card is large enough that it may not fit in small cases (it's almost an inch longer than the 460 it replaced). In my case I had to sacrifice 2 SATA ports that are no longer reachable. Those of you with small cases should consider one of the"alternate" Gigabyte models that are shorter (the two models with single fans). If you're building a new rig with this card (or planning on dual cards for SLI), do youself a favor and make sure you have a big case, long power cables, and use a full-sized (ATX) board, instead of a micro or mini-ATX. Also check the power requirements; besides wattage, this card requires two 6-pin power inputs. One converter is included for turning two 4-pin power connectors into a single 6-pin. Gigabyte states the card can drive up to 4 displays simultaneously. I've owned several gigabyte graphics cards and have used their motherboards, and have never had problems with any of them. Gigabyte is on my current list of "trusted" brands. For all but the most hard-core gamers, a card like this one offers plenty of oomph for recent and current games. This is a big, elegantly designed graphics card with excellent cooling. Highly recommended for gamers looking for performance without breaking the bank. ... show more

  • Convert any desktop into a gaming machine
Almost no laptop can play the current games. All my laptops had only had integrated graphics and so did the stand alone all in ones. Stop looking for an easy way to PC game. Build your own PC to play almost anything for the price of a basic laptop. Also, I just got a PS4 and realized that you have to pay to play online multiplayer. Why not just play multiplayer games online for free on the PS3? Because all the new games will not be released on the PS3. Ok, so I'm a noob. I know that fifty dollars is not bad for a year of online playing, but I currently only online game maybe once or twice a week. The online consensus was that the GTX 960 has become the minimum to play most games above choppy. Add that to a Shuttle XPC i5 mini system, which was very cool and tiny compared to the full towers of yesteryear. I thought about the Mini ITX board, but read about the high noise levels. Since the OC version looked short and had the Windforce logo, I chose that because I wanted a quieter card. Installation was rather difficult because I forgot how Windows worked. I read up on the BIOS- I needed to update it. Before installing, uninstall the current video driver and shut down. Install the Geforce drivers even though nothing happens. Shutdown. Place the card into the PCI slot and attach the supplemental power. Startup the box and reinstall the Geforce drivers if needed. So, I guess, some computer experience is necessary. Note about the Shuttle XPC case- The supplemental power plug will not clear the disk caddy. So I bought a plug extender and cut the actual plug down by half. It barely clears the disk caddy, but I will not be removing it anytime soon. I just played Battlefront and all the settings in Auto were high. It played fine and with almost no noise. Any noise was a low whoosing sound instead of a high pitched whine. I plan to play BF4, BF Hardline, NFS series, maybe GTA V, Dota, Warface, Team Fortress and a few others. Will report back if there are any problems. From what I've read, most games will play fine with 2gb, but knowing that a system can get "old" very quickly I opted for the 4gb version- especially since there was a rebate going. I almost got a lesser card, but I knew the pain and frustration of upgrading over and over. You might as well be happy or not do it at all. Plus, I get to use it for Photoshop and video editing. You just have to deal with updating drivers, but Geforce seems to be current. ... show more

  • Great older graphics card.
I've had this gpu for two years now and it's a great match for my FX-6300 running at 4.4 GHz. It destroys most AAA games at 1080p with high or in some games ultra settings and does it while almost completely silent. The 2 gigabytes of memory starts to become an issue in some games with really nice textures or if you want a lot of post processing but for an older generation card you shouldn't expect any more from it. It has a nice factory overclock on it, but my biggest complaint is that It's supposed to be a binned card thats guaranteed to overclock better than other 960s, but I can't get it stable at anything past 1508 Mhz boost clock ( only +65 Mhz offset from the factory OC, and it throttles down 30 mhz if it gets to 63c). Don't get me wrong this is a really nice clock speed but I was expecting a bit more from this card since I've seen other 960s get much higher overclocks. That being said, this is an extremely power efficient card that only gets to 75c at full load while still managing to be super quiet. I can't say I recommend purchasing this card anymore since the new 10 series has released, but I don't regret buying this card. ... show more
