Installing the Y-axis is an easy process, even with Sainsmart/Genmitsu instructions. Anyone that has seen their manuals knows what I'm talking about. They aren't very clear, but they'll get you there. The T-nuts don't fit the slots well, making the process more time consuming than it should be. After reassembly, the Y-axis is 33.8 mm or 13 5/16 in, or about double. The extra length is nice to have. As for CNC operations, change your work area/ material dimensions in the program. The ability to make larger creations also means completion times are longer. Depending on the level of detail desired, material size and thickness, the 3018, even with the Y extension, is just another tool in my box. I am mystified that Sainsmart's order page say it's discontinued and out of stock, but Sainsmart sent it to me when I ordered it through Amazon. Great solid addition to the 3018, be smart and buy it with the machine so you dont have to disassemble it to upgrade, it will double your work area! (on the Y-axis)
