  • I needed it. I needed it.
These days the power keeps going out. I could have bought the big hole house generator for thousands of dollars but I just got this one for about one thousand. Just for my furnace and frig. Had to get a furnace switch to go from power company to my generator and have help to put it in. Push the button on generator to start it. Was easy to put together. Its got a gas gauge. Nice. Just a little loud. Start it once a month to keep it in good shape. ... show more

  • Unable to Pull Start W/O Bigger Biceps/12hr Runtime at 460-500 Watts
I'm giving this 3 stars because I cannot start this generator myself. My husband has to do it. I've tried pull starting it but it is just really tight. The noise level is high, which is what you would expect from a gas generator. It is heavy. The One of the wheels popped off but my husband said it was an easy fix. I can move it, however, I cannot get it in and out of the barn even with a ramp by myself. I'm 5.5-135lb but I'm not weak. This thing is heavy. We get 12hrs of continuous runtime using 460-500 watts on a full tank of 91 octane, no ethanol gas, a clean air filter and under 100 run hours on it. There is no eco-mode or other such settings, it's on/off. I really like it, don't get me wrong. I just wish it was easy to pull start. I can start our push lawn mower, chainsaw and power washer...but not this generator. If it was an easier to start, I'd give it 5 stars. I guess we should have got an electric start :) ... show more

  • Surprisingly BAD!
I’ve always had a positive opinion of Generac, mostly because I sold them for standby use when I worked at an electrical supply house, but that was years ago. During the pre-storm days of the winter storm this year January 2026, I assisted a widow from church in preparing her newly purchased GP6500DF generator. This is my honest experience. 1. It did not include a quick start assembly sheet. 2. The leveling feet needed to be installed, but no basic tools were included. 3. The battery was not connected yet it was still DEAD and needed charged. 4. Assembly overall required tools that the generator did not include. 5. The generator came with a 1.09qts container of oil that only filled the oil reservoir up to the half full mark on the dipstick, and did not allow it to start because of the low oil level cutoff. We had to add our own oil to it. 6. Connecting it to a propane tank would not start it. We verified the bottle was full, the hose was connected properly, and propane was able to come out when the quick disconnect plate was manually depressed. 7. Before adding oil it had no spark, but even after adding oil the spark on the plug was pathetically weak, indicating that the magneto was either improperly set from the factory, or defective. 8. No where in the manual or the gasoline start up procedures does it mention the fuel shutoff valve, which is hidden far up underneath the gas tank, and in the off position from the factory. 9. Level 1 tech support was almost worthless. 10. When we finally made it to level 2 tech support, the notes did not transfer over and we had to explain all our problems over and everything we had already tried already again to the new level 2 tech. 11. This was purchased at the outset of a potential energy emergency, and it’s supposed to be an emergency / portable generator. One would expect that the necessary basic tools would be included, but they were not. My overall experience with this generator, as a person with a gasoline and diesel maintenance background is that any regular person would have failed to get it set up and running without help, even under non-emergency conditions. We still have not figured out the LPG operation problem, despite having gone through the start up procedures religiously multiple time with and without level 2 tech support. I personally will never trust Generac, at least the portable models, and would strongly recommend against buying one. I also set up other generators for myself and friends in preparation for this storm, including a Predator (HF) model, and a Blackmax (Honda) model, on gasoline and LPG, and both of them were head and shoulders easier. The Predator in particular, surprisingly, was the easiest to setup and started on LPG on the very first attempt. The battery came charged, and already connected, and the front feet were already installed. The portability handle was also straight forward and required zero reference to the manual to assemble. Again, if you have the option to buy a different portable generator rather than this one, I would do so. If you’re stuck then your stuck, but this is just experience. ... show more
