If you are thinking about it, just buy it. I cant rate this product high enough. After being dunked in the water (twice), survived a torrential downpour (and an additional rain storm later on) while clipped to the chest of my PFD, been submerged in a foot of water for an hour, been dropped onto a hard floor four times, and baked in the sun in direct sunlight for days on end - all of the aforementioned happened within a few days - I can confidently say this product has been thoroughly field tested by me. If you look up what your local NOAA weather station is ahead of your trip, then you will know what channel in this radio you will need by the call sign at the end of each NOAA report. Super easy. The SOS function is easy to use in an emergency and LOUD. If ANYBODY is nearby, they are going to wonder what in the world that noise is and they will probably come investigate your situation. I use the radio fm function daily. Super easy to use and consumes virtually no power to listen to. Tuning and scanning is easy. There is a "high power" and "low" power function. The high power is normal use, and the low power function is like the battery saver in your phone. If you only use the radio on the low power function, a single battery charge to full will last a couple days easy. I've literally had condensation form inside the screen and as long as i let it dry while it's off, the radios continued to work just fine after they truly dried. Hand free option. You speak and it transmits if it hears you. Only point to mention is that when used in the rain, although they do function - if they are getting wet the voices coming through can sound mumbled because of the water in their microphone when speaking. Let it dry. It will be fine. I can truly say I have been nothing short of amazed when it comes to the quality of this radio. Read the manual to maximize its potential. My wife and I use walkies while traveling for inter-vehicle communication, me in the RV and she in the "chase vehicle". Towing is not a viable option for us so, she drives the SUV. As such, we have tried several different walkies and these are the best we've found. They are not as user friendly as some other walkies because you have to click through many menu option screens to access the various features - which can be problematic if you are driving. However, these have exceptionally good battery life (16 hours of use between charges), a decent range (though not quite as great as advertised), and the sound quality is quite good. They have many features which we do not use but could be useful for applications beyond basic communications. I would definitely recommend these walkies. ... show more
