Style: Swim Heart Rate Monitor
I have not seen Garmin or anyone else discuss this, but it seems to me that the Garmin HRM strap averages my HR over a couple of minutes. I've attached two HR screen captures: one using just my Garmin Swim 2 watch and one using the HRM strap. These are typical of many others lap-swimming sessions. HR is the bottom red trace, and SWOLF is included just to show the interval of each lap. Total time shown is about 7 minutes for each. Notice that the Swim 2 by itself reports peak HR toward the end of each lap, as I'd expect. The HRM reports a slowly rising HR, with very little variation. It reaches a fairly steady level in 3min 20sec, and takes about 2min to get half-way there, which suggests to me that it is averaging the HR it measures for a time of order 2 minutes. It would be interesting to hear about this from Garmin or from other users. Even for long-distance running, I would think the user would like to know how their HR changes during short spurts of effort. I'll be primarily using my SWIM 2 for swimming HR. BTW, Garmin claims that the HRM strap is more accurate than the Swim 2 by itself, and it makes the Swim 2 switch to the HRM if it is available. This is probably because it is notoriously difficult to get a reliable HR measurement while swimming. For example, the Polar H10 shorts out in a salt water pool (see my H10 review). I find that if put the Swim 2 on fairly tightly (as recommended by Garmin), the HR readings are reasonable and reproducible. I had hoped that the H10 would provide a simultaneous measurement to compare with the Swim 2, but no luck there.

Works well - easy to pair, seems accurate when I've checked it against a manual heart rate count. The strap is stiff and the edge is a bit ...not sharp but definitely distinct... and the plastic buckle is wider than the strap so I'm very aware of it the whole time I'm wearing it. Between the lack of elasticity in the strap and the rubberized contact surface around the chest strap, it doesn't slide up or down on my rib cage. I destroyed my last Garmin HRM by sweating through the rubber gasket and rusting out the internals. This one doesn't have any outward gaskets to damage so I expect it to last longer. Just wish the strap had a bit more give and a less distinct edge.

Recent purchase so can’t comment on battery life, but I find it more accurate than my garmin watch and it’s easy to wear and comfortable. I was concerned as I’m female and didn’t see many reviews addressing its comfort on a woman, and it’s barely noticeable.

I have been using heart rate monitors since 2002 and this product is at the bottom of recommended. With a name like Garmin I expected much more or at least a better fit. The material on the front is “sticky” to the skin which is good but there isn’t enough elastic type material around the back. After about 10minutes in the water you have to adjust or have a under armor type shirt to hold it on. Could make it tighter but then it’s too tight and transition to running, forget that. I do like that the data it collects and downloads is good and accurate, it just (again) expected more from Garmin.

This product does a really good job capturing in-pool HR and syncing it with the 735XT swim metrics. It is a little tricky to setup if you also use the Tri or Standard HR Monitor - you have to make sure you connect to the right serial number. Also, it only syncs outside of the water, and working through the timing and sequence vis-a-vis ending the swim workout is a little confusing. Also, it seems to need to be within line of sight of the watch to sync once my workout is complete. But, overall it helps to provide a complete picture of performance and fitness metrics, so I consider it a valuable addition to my training. From a ergonomics perspective, this HR monitor is purpose built for pool swimming. The wider body and material help it "stick" to your body, which is great! Also, it is more resistant to pool chemicals than the other HR monitor strap materials. Nice job!

I'm very happy with the HRM, and have only a few concerns. First, what I like: when properly put on, it stays put and you can push off the wall w/o worries; it can go in the pool repeatedly and just needs a rinsing after each time with a washing periodically; once set up with my Fenix 5S, it pairs when I select the pool swim app, and syncs as I'm getting out of the pool after I've ended the workout; no chafing or itching. It's a quality product, but I have some comments: getting it on is a pain as it's not elastic like the regular HRM (use the extra black strap to tighten it after you've fastened it and lifted it into place); and the transmitter is always attached (will this affect battery life?). The advantages far outweigh my problems, though, and I'll happily use this as long as it lasts.

I have been using this heart rate monitor five times a week for over five years. It works perfectly, easy to pair with any Garmin device and the battery is easily replaceable. Garmin tends to be pricy but I am always glad I spent the extra money because Garmin’s customer service is AWESOME!

It does what it is supposed to do, but isn't comfortable. In addition, it tends to slip out of place, even under a woman's swimsuit. I was doing a timed event last week, and had to stop at one of the turns to adjust this heart rate monitor. It isn't like I haven't worn heart rate monitors before or that I have lost a bunch of weight and it wasn't on tight enough. The silly thing just won't stay in place.
