    • Yes, it smells - easy fix! Beautiful mat!
When I opened the package, there was a very strong chemical smell to the mat. Think noxious fumes invading the entire level of my house. This was anything but faint. I loved the quality and pattern too much to return, so I looked on other reviews to find a solution. I'm new to yoga, so I don't have the fancy mat cleaners. I used Mrs. Meyer's Basil cleaner twice on both sides, but it still stunk up the room. I then moved it to the garage for a day and washed it down with Clorox wipes - better, but not something I'd want to be around, let alone put my face on. At this point I'm 2 days in and still haven't gotten rid of the smell, so I put it outside, hosed it down with water and let it dry outside all day over a chair. The smell was finally gone! I also purchased the Gaiam blocks and there's a reason they ship those wrapped in plastic... those reeked too! But this time I went straight outside, hosed them down and let them sit on my patio table for the day. By night, they were free of smell too. FINAL SUGGESTED REMEDY: Completely drench in water and let sit outside for the day. I'm new to yoga, but have horrible joints and was apprehensive of a 6mm mat being thick enough. It's very comfortable! I can do gate pose on hardwood without knee pain and tree pose without feeling like there's too much give to balance on. It rolls up and out nice without curling of the corners. I'm only a week in, so I'm definitely not as graceful, or gentle, on the mat as I will be eventually. My mat doesn't seem to care and takes the beating with grace for me. It's a very sturdy and patient mat. The colors I chose are no longer available (Mandala Mantra), but I love the navy and red mandala pattern. When I get tired of it I can turn it over, but not any time soon. I love the design and versatility of this reversible yoga mat. The grip on both sides is really good, you can wipe the mat with a damp cloth to increase the stickiness. However, one downside I’ve noticed is that it tends to curl up when placed on one side, which can be a bit distracting. Despite this, it has a 6mm thickness and it’s still a comfortable mat overall. Just wish it would lay flat more easily. I bought the strap separately on amazon, keep in mind if you are looking to buy a full set. ... show more

I just got this mat today. I’m in love with the color and the fact it has two designs to choose from. It was a little plastic smelling when I first opened it but I popped it into the sun for the day and it no longer smells. I love the length and width of it also the thickness, it’s just enough cushion without it being too much. I don’t have any complaints I’ve loved this brand for years including their yoga blocks. I love this yoga mat! It is really pretty with lots of shades of blue creating a wave. We just bought a house with a room that has built in floor to ceiling wooden bookshelves on one wall, hardwood floors and another wall that is all windows. As you can see from the photo, it is currently a mess. This was moving day and things were stuck randomly all over the place. I intend to paint the room in a lovely green color. Something chosen from nature so that it will extend the colors you view from the windows. I think of it as a forest room and this is where I will do my yoga each day. The bright blue of the mat will make it feel like river running through the forest, or a forest by the sea. I love Gaiam mats. The 6mm mat offers plenty of cush for my knees and they come in lots of colors and styles. The price point is nice compared to some other popular brands. Maybe one day I will try a more expensive mat, but they aren't as pretty as this one. After checking several sites, this had the best offer for mat pattern I was interested in as it’s reversible. Only bad thing …when I first received this it really smelled like heavy plastic. It took a while of airing it out and no longer smells.

The thickness gives just enough cushioning. It definitely doesn’t slip. My hands and feet stay put. It is plenty long for my 5’1” body, but I’m sure it would work for someone 6 ft. tall. I’ve only used it for a week, so I don’t know about durability. I bought Gaian because I know it’s a reliable brand. I read a lot of reviews before buying and intentionally chose one that had NO mentions of pilling or degradation. It’s easy to roll, though it rolls up a bit wider than when I got it. I bought Gaia’s slap band to hold it shut. I was amazed that it expanded enough to hold it. If I was going to leave the house with this, I’d surely buy a shoulder strap carrying case. I’m a beginner so am just starting at home with my physical therapy exercises because the bed is too soft and the floor is too hard. I planned to pack and take this on a 2 month trip to use on the tile floors. But, it would take up too much space in my suitcase. I have to travel lightly because I’m recovering from a shoulder replacement and have a very bad back. By the way, the blue pattern of my mat is absolutely beautiful! ... show more
