  • Not a tamper tool. A WDM stirring device.
This is not a tamper. It is used to stir your ground coffee in the filter basket on a pressure type espresso machine. It removes clumps and evens out the ground coffee to reduce channeling. Not going into all of the whys and what nots of making a great espresso here but this little gadget is well worth having if you’re a coffee aficionado. The difference in the extraction is immediate and obvious. Getting more extraction from your coffee makes a huge difference in flavor. ... show more

  • Flimsy
The hairs are poorly made. Bends with ease and don't straighten back out. Poorly made as well.

  • Distribution costs.
"All about that base." Does this WDT tool work? Yes. When used properly, it reduces clumping in the coffee grounds. [New to WDT? A brief description and technique is at the end of the review.] Why the low mark? Read on. I already have a pair of WDT tools. Well, three, if I count the single pin stirrer that I started out with. I don't need another one, but... I wasn't happy with the way my current WDT tool held on to the needles. It was a friction fit and screwing in the cap kept the needles from moving. The problem was that tightening the cap also meant the needles would twist out of position, resulting in skewed needles. Even though it doesn't affect the results, it always bothered me. When I saw the listing for this FUSOTO WDT tool and the method it uses to hold onto the needles, I knew I had to try it. The needles are inserted coiled end first into a block of open cell foam in the handle instead of sitting in a pit in the handle. Genius! So simple! Except that means the foam block isn't reusable once you pull the needles out. There is a spare block of foam included, should you somehow mess up or need to replace the needles. There is some play in the handle housing where the needles are inserted, and when using this tool, the needles will flex and compress the foam holding them. Over time, the foam will loosen its grip on the needles. I don't suppose getting ahold of foam blocks and cutting them to size is going to be too much of an issue. I can overlook the foam block, but I can't overlook that this WDT tool does not include a stand. This one cost as much as the ones that come with a stand, by the way. So where and how would I store this tool? There are multiple warning about sharp needles in the instruction sheet, but a stand was not included. I am pretty sure it's a matter of time before I stuck myself with the tool. For the price, you can do better. And now, a word about WDT: Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) basically is stirring the coffee grounds with fine pins/needles to decrease clumping and increase extraction. It is a way to compensate for clumping in coffee grinders. When you tamp the grounds with clumps in it, the clumps will be more dense than the grounds around it. That leads to water flowing around the clumps, increase channeling, and less even extraction. Stirring the grounds with pins will break up the clumps. If you want a show-and-tell video of WDT, check your favorite tube platform and look for "Lance Hendrick WDT". Essentially, pins should be between .25 to .4 mm. Thicker pins can compress the grounds while stirring, thereby creating denser pockets of grounds and defeating the purpose of doing WDT. I used to WDT with a thick (toothpick sized) pin stirrer and always had issues with channeling no matter what I try. That included different tampers, no WDT, and wedge distributors. When I switched to these type of stirrers, I have reduced channeling in my pucks. [Tip: Use a bottomless portafilter, it'll show all your puck prep mistakes.] I generally follow Mr. Lance Hendrick's method of deep WDT with a .4 mm stirrer and if I have the time, I use a .25 mm needle stirrer to work the top layer. The method being "circle of circles" starting with the stirrer at the bottom of the portafilter basket and work my way up to the top, making sure the top layer is as level as possible. I find that the thinner stirrer does a better job "raking" the top layer. But you don't need to get that fancy. I no longer use the wedge distribution tool and just tamp after WDT. Given the decreased amount of channeling I've encountered using these type of stirrers, I have to say they are useful at breaking up clumps and thus increasing extraction. I like the thicker, between .3 and .4 mm, pins over the thinner .25 mm pins. The thicker pins feel like they're pushing the grounds around while the thinner pins feel like they are cutting through the grounds. ... show more

  • Nice needle distributor hampered by a lack of storage
Color: Blue
This is a really nice needle distributor. I like the size a lot--it's smaller than my previous one making it easier to handle. It's also got a very sturdy feeling handle made of aluminum alloy with easy to grip surface. The needles are long and sharp and they work well to break up clumps in the portafilter to reduce channeling. It even comes with a replacement set of needles. The only problem is a lack of storage. I don't know about you, but I don't like to have very sharp needles randomly exposed around my kitchen. Most needle distributors at this price point--or for that matter most at lower price points--have a case or some other way to store it. I was able to DIY a temporary fix with the tubular cardboard box it came in and a piece of packing foam but that's a very short term solution. This is a five star tool, but deduct a star for the storage (or lack thereof). ... show more

  • Works well but easy to damage
Color: Gray
Since this one doesn't have a base it ends up sitting with the needles up, and that's easy to bump into. If you bend a needle or two it's not a big deal since you can likely straighten them and there are extras included, but I could see poking yourself or losing it on the floor when you are in a hurry. Functionally it's great, does a decent job breaking up lumps in your portafilter. ... show more

  • Heavy metal tamper
This has a small circumference, but I like the heaviness of this tool It comes with replacement needles and they’re easy to remove/add if necessary.
