  • Heavy, sturdy base and handle makes this a great WDT
If you are in the market for a distribution tool and fall between the spectrum of, A: Making one out of a cork and pins, and B: Buying some $50 device that is essentially a cork and pins, this is your distribution tool. The base and the handle are heavy solid metal, so it feels like a quality kitchen accessory. In addition to the feel, it looks slick and comes with a few extra pins in case your jittery coffee hands bend one or drop the tool. The look and the feel balanced with the cost make it the most legitimate addition to minimize your guilt for spending money on something you could make with a bottle of wine and a sewing kit. How some companies charge $40-50 for one of these is shocking. If you want to spend that type of money, buy this, and send me the change. ... show more

  • Just an OK WDT tool, with prongs that are too thick
This is a well-built and finished WDT tool. The product includes a stand that functions very well and holds the tool perfectly. The needles are held securely through the screw on the top, which also gives the option of replacing them. The main issue I have with the tool is the needles themselves. They are 0.4mm, which seems like a standard size (and common in WDT tools), but in practice, they are way too large to break up clumps in your portafilter. If you do any sort of moving or swirl motion, you'll quickly notice that they just shove the grounds around, without really "cutting" through then. As I mentioned, you could replace them, but this might be difficult too since they seem to have designed the holder to take special needles or perhaps trimmed ones. Typically WDT tools use acupuncture needles with a "spring" top, but these have only 1-2 curls locked into the handle top. ... show more

  • I'm a distributor.
"This is my WDT distribution tool. There are many others like it, but this one is mine." There are a lot of WDT distribution tool listings with the same design as this one. I am willing to bet the way the pins are held will be the same. You should check the images in the listing to confirm. If they show the distribution tool's parts, that is. Do you need this if you make espresso? Yes. If you want to know why, how, and the best options, read on. Otherwise, just plunk down you money for one with .35 or .4 mm pins and use it to decrease the clumps in your coffee grounds. Weiss Distribution Technique (WDT) basically is stirring the coffee grounds with fine pins/needles to decrease clumping and increase extraction. It is a way to compensate for clumping in coffee grinders. When you tamp the grounds with clumps in it, the clumps will be more dense than the grounds around it. That leads to water flowing around the clumps, increase channeling, and less even extraction. Stirring the grounds with pins will break up the clumps. If you want a show-and-tell video of WDT, check your favorite tube platform and look for "Lance Hendrick WDT". Essentially, pins should be between .25 to .4 mm. Thicker pins can compress the grounds while stirring, thereby creating denser pockets of grounds and defeating the purpose of doing WDT. I used to WDT with a thick (toothpick sized) pin stirrer and always had issues with channeling no matter what I try. That included different tampers, no WDT, and wedge distributors. When I switched to these type of stirrers, I have reduced channeling in my pucks. [Tip: Use a bottomless portafilter, it'll show all your puck prep mistakes.] I generally follow Mr. Lance Hendrick's method of deep WDT with a .4 mm stirrer and if I have the time, I use a .25 mm needle stirrer to work the top layer. The method being "circle of circles" starting with the stirrer at the bottom of the portafilter basket and work my way up to the top, making sure the top layer is as level as possible. I find that the thinner stirrer does a better job "raking" the top layer. But you don't need to get that fancy. I no longer use the wedge distribution tool and just tamp after WDT. Given the decreased amount of channeling I've encountered using these type of stirrers, I have to say they are useful at breaking up clumps and thus increasing extraction. I like the thicker, between .3 and .4 mm, pins over the thinner .25 mm pins. The thicker pins feel like they're pushing the grounds around while the thinner pins feel like they are cutting through the grounds. A word about the way the pins are held by the stirrer. Many of these WDT stirrers use acupuncture needles (note the long coiled wire "handle"). The stirrers with thicker pins, like this one, appear to have short handles. Check the listing images to determine the type in use. Replacing the pins are easy. Just twist off the top and drop in a replacement pin. The issue is that the pins in this model are the short handle type and sits in divot holes. The cap twists down to secure the pins, but in doing so, pushes down on the handles, twisting the pins. You are going to have a heck of a time trying to get the picture perfect flared out arrangement. Some of those pins will twist inwards or toward another pin. I don't bother too much to correct that, but pins out of postion offend my aesthetics! ... show more

  • Just wow
First esspresso machine ever. Made okay coffee. It didnt come with a distributor. This made the esspresso draw faster and taste better. Needles are flexible to avoid breaks. Ends of needles are dull to avoid ripping filters. Plenty of extra needles. Plus its stylish on my counter.
