A professional Interior Designer of 22 years, I also teach Interior Design at the University level. I am proud to require this as our textbook for History of Furniture. The photography, the selected pieces, the detailed information --- on-target! Students actually enjoy learning historical styles, all-the-while picking-up a little World History along the way. (Warms a teacher's heart!) The book contains elegant photos of furniture only found in world famous museums. Judith Miller has given us an up-close and personal look at seldom seen antiques, as well as more current pieces. Even the dedicated student would have had to spend years visiting select museums for just a peek. The quality of the research, the pictures, even the quality of the paper tells the reader "something special is behind this cover". All this AND, it's a gorgeous Coffee Table Book; worthy of a Christmas gift to that hard-to-buy-for person on everyone's list. ... show more

Often I just open this book and just browse through different eras of furniture. A brilliant book with enourmous amount of picturesand ideas. I recommend it 100%. If you are into furniture design history or a practicing woodworker regardless of your skills - you are in dire need of this book. You just don't know it yet) ... show more

Format: Hardcover
A great reference book for the serious student of decorating/design, or teachers who want to have a great resource withh lots of wonderful photos. However it is not for the reader who wants an easy text to read...this is more academic. I use it for classroom illustrations - as the photos are superb. And the text is one of the most accurate from my research on the topic of design styles. ... show more

I bought this as a Christmas gift for my mother. She is a big antiques road show fan, with a particular interest in furniture. This was given as a Christmas gift to a dear friend who is studying furniture (among many other subjects) at college. The book was perfect - beautifully done with plenty of illustrations and will serve as a desk reference for many years to come.

Recommended by a fine furniture craftsman as THE book to have as an overview to recognizing furniture styles throughout history. My copy is definitely "used" but quite serviceable. This is an airplane flight over the history of furniture style, not a dissertation on furniture development. I would buy it again. Shame it is out of print. ... show more
