I knew what I was looking for. I wanted a small, narrow, sturdy table/desk and so for the last 2 months this has been fine. However, I am thinking the dark stain is what is giving off the strong smell. I noticed it when we first got it but wiped it off a few times and put the desk where I wanted it. I only would smell the odor occasionally. But now I have moved it into a bedroom and the smell is much stronger in a smaller area. At first I thought it was something else but no, it is this desk. So this is just a heads up if you're sensitive to scents/chemical smells that are long lasting. I have thought about covering it with wall adhesive or some other covering to see if it will help mask the scent because wiping it off with cleaners isnt helping. ... show more

Easy assembly. Sturdy if places against a wall. If you plan to move this a lot, it won't hold up. It works very well as a desk in a small space and has plenty of leg room (I'm 5'11").

I will be completely candid. You get what you pay for. The biggest thing to remember is that it’s so cheaply made that you must learn the art of assembly without destroying it. You must treat it gently. When you assembly it DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN. It will chip off. Snap. Break. Etc… be gentle. It’s nothing fancy. It will suit your needs but be gentle so you don’t break it b4 using it. That’s all. Oh. No moisture in it like a sweating glass cup or etc… it’ll stain it. Ok that’s all. Got this for extra homework space in a small room and with a discount on the price I couldn't be happier. I was looking at tv trays that were a LOT more expensive than this piece. It's the perfect size for laptop, notes, etc., It's very simple to assemble – ((( I ))) got confused with the cross boards*, so suggest you just go slow and stand the parts up as they are supposed to be as if assembled, and you'll see which sides face up and toward the back. There's no tools supplied so you'll need a Phillips head screwdriver and a small hammer or mallet (for the footpads – unless you have massive thumb-strength; if so, you do you Gigantor). There's only one extra dowel...no extra screws, etc., so don't lose the bits and bobs. Everything is labeled and the instructions are...typical illustration style with little to no written direction. *But still simple to follow (ahem). All the drill holes matched up just fine. Put the circular anchors in for the top screws just before you put the top on. Because they won't stay put if you're still trying to assemble other parts. For some reason the step says to put them in earlier than they should. That or I just reallllllllly suck at reading pictographs. Looking for a gorgeous desk that will fool everyone with it's deceptive beauty that belies it's humble origins? Leave this page right now. This is laminated particle board. It'll probably disintegrate if you yell "BOO!" or, worse, put anything more than 20 lbs on it...sooooo....don't sit on it, don't pull yourself up off the floor with it, don't use it for grooming your 100 lb Bullmastiff, don't park your butt on it ever, and this is DEFINITELY not a desk for dramatically arm-sweeping office supplies to the floor for se*y time. Come on now. Think it through. 20 lbs. That's. It.) Lean this desk up against a wall and it will not wobble (much). That and the back has unfinished sides...so there's that. Definitely would recommend this if you need a small simple desk for writing/studying. ... show more
