...we were! Oh, come on, we were, but we were harmless and were having the time of our lives. Seriously (which is what every comic says when they are about to be anything but...?), this book is certainly about the 'Sports Moped' phenomenon and you will certainly learn a great deal about the bikes and their evolution, how innovators thrwarted governments at every turn and how the moped was the progenator of a generation of motorcyclists, to say nothing of the chicanery of both kid and parent in 'negotiating' the acquisition of our ticket to 'freedom', 'indpendence' and 'responsibility'. The work itself is most definitely written in an informative and engaging style that renders it an unmissable work for anyone interested in the subject and the culture. Aha! there it is, that extra little bit thrown in at the end; the culture. These bikes weren't about the bikes as such, they were about their impact on a generation, not just the one that became bikers for real, so to speak, but in the whole 'being' of being a kid (mostly male) in the mid '70's. And that is where this book's real value lies; in that it is a priceless historical document that sets out a snapshot, admittedly from a perspective of looking forward over the handlebars (though occasionally the garage floor), of life 'back then'. In doing so the first hand accounts are screamingly funny, particularly if that was you, you were there, knew 'a mate' who did such and such, heard them coming and saw them whizz by, fell over the swarm of 'peds in the college bike shed or indeed can just capture the whole experience in your mind's eye. All you need now is the music...now there's an idea; the 'funky mopeds' greatest hits! Pure magic. Buy it, borrow it, steal it, read it. This is a fun book that details a fantastic era in Britain where the law intended to protect teens from themselves created some impressive motorcycles. It has plenty of pics, lots of funny "I was there" stories, as well as actual data on the peds.I particularly like the restoration section. Some of those mopeds were quite advanced, and far removed from the anemic department store mopeds common in America. I'd gladly rip it to work on a Malaguti Olympia. ... show more

Good reference book for the moped enthusiast. The book is fill3ed with valuable information. The book was not as complete as I was hoping, but good none the less.
