This elegant cover is produced using superior Japanese dyeing technology and sewing techniques. The cover can be washed at home. As another reviewer has noted, it will shrink (correction: CAN shrink—see second paragraph). This will make a Twin XL (83” long) shikibuton a tight fit, lying not quite flat with a bug bump in the middle. English language support on the tags and literature is minimal, but I suspect that somewhere in the Hiragana text is a warning that the fabric is old-school cotton—NOT pre-shrunk—with apposite care guidelines, so those of us who aren’t Japanese-literate miss out on that critical information. Solution: Launder it so it won’t shrink, like your grandmother would have back in the day before pre-shrunk fabrics were commonplace—that is, do not use any heat. After mine shrunk, I ordered a second: Can confirm that if hand-washed (or machine-washed on a gentle/“delicates” cycle) with the coldest water possible, then either line dried or tumble dried with NO HEAT, it will NOT shrink. If there were adequate literature to prevent user-error for we Americans who are unaccustomed to traditional fabrics, this product would be worthy of 5 stars: It’s soft, smooth, comfortable, and easy to dry-maintain (use a vacuum and/or lint brush). Other than adding more complete care instructions/warnings, all I would change is that the zip closure should extend around at least one of the short sides—with the opening only on one long side, it can be a wrestling match getting a shikibuton into it without a second pair of hands to assist.

The instructions clearly say to line dry it, but I washed on warm and tumbled dry on medium and the queen-sized shikibuton also made by Ful stilli fits great inside. It was somewhat snug initially, curling the edges of the shikibuton immediately after washing but after sleeping on it there is no issue and the entire set lays flat. (I also have a conventional queen sized mattress protector over the shikibuton, so an extra layer and and the sheet still fits over everything neatly.) I’ll experiment with subsequent washes/drying to see if the sheet shrinks any further. The sheet itself is a nice crisp cotton and the full encasing of the shiki makes it so convenient to fold the entire set after use. Considering that typical queen sized decent sheet sets are usually more than $100, this is a fairly good price for the quality of 100% cotton and the convenient design.

So this is just an overpriced duvet cover. One person posted a review stating the exact same thing by a duvet cover. I didn’t listen and I bought this 🙇♂️was it worth the price? no Is it thin? Yes Is it similar to a couch cover? Not even close. Is it closer to a bedsheet? Yes

TL;DR: This cotton cover shrinks!! Bought this cover as it’s one of the very few options that fit the size of the twin XL shikibuton that I have. I even bought it from the same vendor that sells the futon mattress and tatami that I bought. I was very careful not to dry the mattress cover in a dryer and only line dried it. After 1 wash it shrank in length and now my futon mattress would not fit inside. Now I’m stuck with a cover I cannot use and it doesn’t fit anything else. I do NOT recommend this item.

I love this futon cover except I wish it was a bit larger because it’s really tight. I have never put it in the dryer, I always line dry. Washed in cold. It’s a bit annoying to put on but other than that, no complaints. Thank you.

I have lower back pain, and sleeping on the floor sometimes helps. I love how soft this mattress is, but not too thick (I sleep with it on top of an exercise/yoga mat). It's a good size; I got the twin XL because at least one of my four pets insists on sleeping with me when I sleep on it -- I think they figure that because it's on the floor, it's obviously meant for them, too! I love that I can fold it up and store it in a closet during the day. Like most products made in Japan, it's very good quality, and I think will serve me well for a long time. I also bought the zip cover to go over it, and it also allows me to put a waterproof mattress pad inside that to protect against pet accidents. Love this mattress!
