  • Beautiful, comfy, durable, high-quality boots
These are riding boot perfection. Love the leather soles (I don't clip clop when I walk) and the high quality leather uppers. These are leather through-and-through, unlike other leather boots I have purchased in recent years. I bought these in wide calf and was pleased I did. I am always on the brink of a wide calf boot, but can usually can get away with the regular calf. In these, I read in reviews that the calf was small, so the wide calf weren't as wide as other brands. The length was also a smidge long but that suits me fine because I like to wear medium weight socks in these since there isn't a ton of padding. If you like to wear orthotics in your shoes, size a 1/2 size up and that should be equivalent to a whole size large to accommodate a full length insert. You should be able to fit a 1/2 length orthotic in you actual size since they fit generously. The width is also a tiny bit narrow, but my medium width feet didn't have an issue. Heel height is perfect and works great for shock absorption on hard pavement. I wore these on a long walk on gravel and my very flat feet were happy the entire day. These are the kind of boots you'll own for years if you treat them well (stay out of downpours and condition them a couple times a year). This, in my opinion makes them completely worth the price. I also own this exact pair (black) in the brown Cognac color as well and they are beautiful. My favorite boot purchases ever! ... show more

  • SO Comfortable. Wide Calf fits 14.25" calf with jeans. Would recommend ordering 1/2 size up.
I purchased these boots in Cognac and Black over a year ago and they are really wonderful! -COLOR- The cognac option seems to come in varying shades. I have seen some in a lighter tan shade and some (like mine) almost lean a medium shade of red-brown. The black pair have a glossier finish and dressier look then the cognac pair. -SHAFT OPENING- The wide calf styles fit my 14.25" calf with jeans perfectly and do not look like wide calf boots on me. Regular width was impossible to pull on. I couldn't get my heel down in them. -COMFORT- I have worn them to a convention where I walked around an exhibit hall for 6 hours with absolutely no discomfort, and I have worn them to work where I have to stand/walk around for 5 hours at a time. -LEATHER- The leather gets softer over time and really molds to your foot. It is a great quality leather and you can tell it is genuine and top quality. The leather around the toes will eventually crease a bit where you bend them, especially if you are moving around a good bit in them, but this has not been something that bothers me. You can see the creases at the toe in my images. I used Frye's weatherproofing cream on the black pair and it did not change the color of the leather when applied. I have worn them in the rain a good number of times and have seen no change in the coloring or look of boots due to wet weather exposure. -SIZING- I usually wear a 7.5 in closed toed shoes. I order an 8 in Frye boots and am able to wear varying thicknesses of socks comfortably. I would rather they be a little loose than too tight. -SUMMARY- If you are asking yourself if they are worth the money, the answer is yes. I did watch out for deals and was able to find coupon codes each time I purchased but I would still have paid full price now that I own them and know how much I love them. ... show more

  • Lovely boots, complicated fit
Size: 9 Color: Black - Crust Laredo
I'm returning these Frye Melissa button boots for a few reasons. First, they run large. I usually wear a 9 and the 9 in this boot feels more like a 9.5-10. I do appreciate that the fit is roomy as I have wide feet. The calf is pretty wide, which is an issue for me with my skinny calves. The boots are gorgeous and feel high quality. I do find it unfortunate that they are completely smooth on bottom and have absolutely no tread. I am 5'8" and they only come up to my mid calf. ... show more

  • Nothing Compares to a Frye Boot
I purchased these boots after spending many weeks researching boots that were moderately priced, classically designed, and durable enough to last for many years. Hands down I kept returning to the Frye brand. I owned a pair back in the 70's that were resoled many times because they were so comfortable and form fitted to my feet. I only gave them up some 25 years later because my feet flattened and they became too small. Since then, I have purchased many different boots but none were as durable or comfortable as my Frye's. I ordered the antiqued black leather simply because they were about $100 less than the regular black. I simply applied some thick black leather polish and while there are still some crinkles in the shaft leather, they look every bit as good as the other. I ordered them in my regular shoe size 9 and while they are a bit roomy in the foot, a heavier pair of socks fills them in adequately. The leather is beautiful, thick, top quality and the stitching is done in a heavy thread. The sole is also made of leather so can be a bit slippery until roughed up. The lining and footbed are very soft and comfortable and the brass buttoned pull ons make it easy to pull them on. The shaft is adequate for an average woman's calf. The styling is traditional and while stylish will never go out of style. I wear them to walk the dog, shop, and evenings out. They are the perfect compliment to every outfit! There are many riding style boots on the market but I'm sure these will keep on "walking" long after other boots hit the landfill. I did waterproof them as we live in the northeast where it rains a great deal in the fall and spring and winters are wet and snowy. I had them on last night after several inches of snow and sleet fell and my feet stayed warm and dry. A must have for every quality conscious woman! ... show more

  • AMAZING FABULOUS WONDERFUL BOOT!
And pretty, well, "ta boot!' I have many problems with my feet .... bunions, high arches, bone spurs, bi plantar facitis .... O yes. I should have listened all those years ago when I was young and my matronly coworkers would tell me I was going to ruin my feet wearing high heels. My first experience wearing Frye boots I found I could not wear those particular boots so I always shied away from them and opted to get Danskos and Ariat. Well, I saw a girl on the street one day a few weeks ago in some Frye boots that I thought were glorious so I took a shot and let me tell you: These are hands down The Most Comfortable boots of ANY kind I have EVER worn and my plan is to one day buy MORE! The color is nicely distressed. The fit is like a GLOVE. They are feminine. They ROCK. I wear these for hours and hours and HOURS and they don't bother my feet at all. Look great with skirts and jeans. And probably leggings if I had any of those. My one and only complaint is that when I took them out of the box, they had obviously no doubt about it been WORN by someone who then had the utter audacity to RETURN THEM. What a loser you are whoever you are! The bottoms were scuffed and dirty! I ended up keeping these boots because I waited SEVERAL days for them just to ship and I had to wear something to work. Amazon was great about it and did try and make it right, but it was just a day late and a dollar short, so to speak. So BEWARE if you purchase these boots ... You just might pay the high price and get stuck with something someone else wore and then returned. And splurge on the Frye non aerosol oil spray to protect them ... it works great. ... show more

  • Finally! A beautiful, distressed, classic, boot for girls with long legs and skinny calves.
I am a boot addict with very skinny calves and feet so finding the right boot size can be frustrating for me. I haven't had the best luck with FRYE boots in the past in regards to calf fit, but was delightfully surprised when these beauties showed up. My standard shoe size is 10, but boots sizing can range between 9-11 for me. I've found that most Frye boots fit me in size 9.5, as these did. The toe box is fairly snug but the leather quality is superb so they should stretch and mold to me feet after the first few wears perfectly. I have longs legs with a 34-35 inseam and these boots hit about 4 inches below my knee when measured down to the side loops. The largest part of my calves measures 14.5 inches, and these fit perfectly in that area. Any smaller, though, and I would have had to return them. These boots definitely would not work for anyone with calves larger than 15 inches. I love the worn/antiqued look of these slate brown boots. They look expensive and the color is rich and worn without looking old. The leather is soft and comfortable and smells amazing. The heel is hard so expect to be heard when you walk on hard surfaces and floors. The best thing about purchasing the Frye brand is the longevity of their products. I expect these boots to look great and last far longer than I actually intend to wear them. Now, if I can only find the extra room in my closet... ... show more

  • Doesn't live up to the hype
OK, for years I've wanted a pair of Frye riding boots because I love boots and they seem to be the *it* brand if you want to treat yourself to a nice pair. But honestly, I don't see what all the fuss is about, at least considering the price. First off, their boots are clearly designed for tall, willowy runway models, and that just annoys me on principle. I have never had to order an extended calf before, but I did in this brand, and on top of that, they go up pretty high on the leg, making the sides poke out awkwardly. There's enough out there making women feel bad about their bodies, and having the cool-girl boot brand apparently see women with my body type as some kind of short, dumpy Oompa Loompa doesn't help (For the record, I am just under 5'3" and usually wear a size 6 in pants, and I do not have muscular calves. These boots are clearly just meant for a tall and lanky woman). I mean, they're fine and everything, just not for the price (and I got a really good deal where they were about $112, which is a lot less than they usually cost). I strongly prefer my Carlos Santana knockoffs of these boots that I've had for, like, six years now (the "Fawn" style). They're real leather as well and almost a carbon copy of this silhouette, only I got them for about $50 and they fit my legs better. Wish I could find another pair of those, as my existing ones are getting pretty beat up, which is what spurred me to finally treat myself to a pair of Fryes. As for the fit of the shoe itself, I would say it's true to size, maybe even a little big. I got my usual 8.5 and they weren't at all small, and even looked, from the side, like maybe they were a little too long (though maybe that's just an optical illusion that has to do with the way the shoe is designed). They seemed comfy and like they actually had some pretty nice arch support, but I guess I'm just spoiled by those similar boots I love that were under $50. ... show more

  • Initial impression of 8 vs. 8.5 "B": I like them a lot and will likely grow to love them if I can get the fit right!
I was looking for a classic boot - not too "Western" and appropriate for wearing to an office that's a bit more "business" than casual. This is my first pair of Frye boots, in black suede, and they are right on target, style-wise! These will be very versatile with my staple layered look of dressier leggings/tapers with tunics, long tops and a jacket or cardigan. As for fit: I'm usually an 8, which allows a little room for a full-length cushioned insole (which goes in all my shoes). Since boots can mean sizing up, I ordered an 8.5. It provided a nice amount of wiggle room in the toes but was otherwise too loose and sloppy with too much heel slippage (even with the added insole). I could tell it would likely affect my gait and lead to problems. I ordered the 8(B) next and tried them with the same insole. The fit seemed perfect, except for being tight (particularly on the right foot) across the widest part of my foot, from the ball joint to the pinky toe. Enough length, but little wiggle room for the toes, leaving my right pinky toe feeling squished. That said, I know that suede can stretch. And I also noted that other reviewers said they stretched over time (and some mentioned having them stretched by a cobbler). So, I decided to wear them indoors for the day. They do seem to be stretching a bit. I tried the 8.5 again and, though the extra toe room was nice, they just feel much too loose and wider in the shaft than I'd like. So, I'll bring them to our (excellent) local shoe repair to get some professional advice on stretching. But, at this point, I think the 8 will work. Other points to note, which have been raised by other reviewers: - Yup, the leather bottoms are very slippery! To a scary degree on carpet and more than I'd like on my kitchen tile. Since my office will be carpet and slick floors, I've got two options: scuff them up or have the cobbler add a non-slip sole. I'll consult with the shoe repair shop on the latter, as covering the sole would also help to preserve the leather and stitching and extend it's like generally. - Shaft may not work for wider calves. I measured mine (for the first time, actually) and they're just under 13". The shaft on the 8 feels like the perfect fit; it lightly "hugs" but I can still slide my thumbs down each side with ample wiggle room. So, those who said the B width may not work for calves over 15" are probably spot-on in suggesting the wider width. - I had no trouble at all sliding my foot into the 8 or the 8.5 and didn't need to tug on the straps; I was able to pull them on by grabbing the top of the boot on either side. But, please do note that these have no zipper and that others had issues with the pull-on style. - Also, as others noted, it appears these are not pristine and untried. I got these for nearly HALF the stated retail price, so I expected these to be factory seconds OR floor/show models OR retail returns OR some combination of those factors. One pair arrived in the original box with half the original packing missing and barely scuffed soles. The other pair arrived with no original packing, loose in an Amazon shipping box, with more scuffing on the soles. Honestly, the condition didn't bother me on either pair - the condition was still better than I was expecting based on some of the reviews, and I was quite happy to enjoy the savings! I hope this review is helpful. I'll update it once I've made a final decision and have worn them a bit more. ... show more
