  • Great for sit/stand music keyboard
Color: Black
The media could not be loaded. QUICK SUMMARY: the ability of this powered sit/stand desk to go as low as 23.6 inches makes it a perfect solution for practicing electric piano in both sitting and standing positions. CAVEATE: before implementing a solution like this, be sure the minimum height (23.6 inches plus the height of the top you attach) will put you at the correct playing height (key surface at or slightly below elbow height) by taking measurements while seated at your bench, and taking into account the distance from the surface on which your keyboard sits to the top surface of the keys. PROBLEM I WAS TRYING TO SOLVE: I took up piano at age 62 (about a year ago) using an electronic keyboard (Yamaha P121, 76 keys). After about six months I started getting sciatica pains from sitting on the bench for over an hour a day. I got a taller keyboard stand and went to a standing position which eliminated the sciatica. However, now I'm doing more and more practice that requires a lot of pedal work, and playing keyboard while standing can be a bit tricky when working the pedal while going up and down the keyboard (my balance not being the best in the world!). Plus, standing for an hour can cause a bit of lower back ache for me. So, it would be nice to sit sometimes and stand sometimes. SOLUTION: The solution of course would be to change positions, sitting for half an hour, standing for half an hour etc. But switching my current stand's height is not a simple process and requires taking the keyboard off (with all it's associated wires), changing all four legs, putting everything back together. Not something I would like to do every day. THE SEARCH: So I looked for a powered sit/stand desk. I was looking for months, but all of them had a minimum height around 27 inches or more. That's way too high (as my keyboard is 5" tall from the bottom to the top of the keys, so a 27 inch stand would put the key surface at 32 inches) and would put the key surface above my elbow height (optimal position for me is key surface about 1-2 inches below my elbow height (with arms down at sides and forearm horizontal) so my forearms are slightly angled downward). Finally, I found this one which goes down to (with a 1" thick top installed) 24.6". That is absolutely perfect for my height with my bench on max height, and would likely be good for most people. (If you're on the shorter side, maybe not though. I am 5 foot 9. You would need to measure your elbow height when sitting on your bench. Some people like the key surface at elbow height, in that case you get a bit more leeway.) ASSEMBLY: The instruction's estimate of 5 minutes for assembly is wildly optimistic, but I would never have expected to be able to assemble something like this in 5 minutes LOL. It took me about 30 minutes, which is just fine. But I am pretty handy and build things all the time so your mileage may vary. Still, it was not difficult or complex by any means, just took a little organization and care to make sure everything lined up the right way. I bought a 24" by 60" cherry wood laminate top for $70 and it looks great and has extra horizontal room (since I want to eventually expand to an 88 key keyboard and those are usually over 50" wide). It even has room for additional speakers, a mixer, and other accessories for future expansion, and the included headphone hook is convenient for when I want to practice without disturbing the rest of the household. I also put 2.5" diameter felt pads on the feet of the unit since I have it deployed on a hardwood floor and didn't want to scratch it. I chose 2mm thick felt pads so as not to add too much height to the minimum setting. PROGRAMMING HEIGHT POSITIONS: It's super easy to set your desired heights and do the initial reset. The instructions are clear enough though a bit stilted (having been translated). I was initially worried that the unit would lose my height settings on power failure since the instructions seem to hint that would happen. We lose power in my area on a monthly basis so that would be a bit of a pain to have to dial the settings in every time. However, I did a test, unplugging the unit for 1 full minute then plugging back in, and it did retain all my settings. DAILY USE: I've used this for several practice sessions, and wow, it's a game changer for me. When I'm just doing scales or arps, I stand. When I work on a song that needs a lot of pedaling, I click one button and five seconds later I'm sitting. When I get tired of sitting or don't need a lot of pedal work, I stand again. The movement of the unit is smooth and pretty quiet. The unit is also rock solid for keyboard playing. My prior stand, which was a pretty good brand (Jamstand) would wobble slightly if I was playing something where I was pounding on the keys (fortissimo). And during fast scale work going up and down it would slightly wobble side to side which actually made it slightly harder to hit the right keys, being moving targets. Not this unit. Doesn't budge. CONS: Of course, this does not take the place of a portable stand. This is anything but portable, it doesn't fold up and with the top probably weighs north of 50 pounds. This is only for use in a permanent practice situation, like a home or studio. But for that purpose, wow. Perfect. COMPETING SOLUTION: I did a search in music stores for a powered sit/stand keyboard stand made specifically for music use. I only found one, it cost $1559. This solution, including the top and shipping of the top, came in around $400. As far as I could tell from the descriptive information, the purpose built music solution had no additional features beyond what I'm getting with the less expensive solution here (other than looking a bit more like a traditional stand). That stand does go very slightly lower, 23.5 inches whereas mine with top is 24.6 inches minimum. So, if you are on the shorter side, that one inch might make a difference. But, I will note that you could find a thinner top. My top is 1" but you could probably use a slab of melomine that's 1/2 inch and get the minimum of this solution down to 23.6", then they're basically the same. Or find a slightly taller bench seat. My bench seat max height is 22.25". OVERALL: A great solution for a sit/stand electronic keyboard practice for home or studio. Makes it much easier for me to practice comfortably for protracted periods without triggering sciatica or lower back problems. When I get tired of one position, one click of a button and I'm in the other position. Because of this I'm already practicing more and enjoying it more. ... show more

  • Only 2 weeks in, but works great so far!
Color: White
I wanted a desk that could go pretty low for sitting (25”), but higher for standing on walking pad. I also found a table top that is 72”x36” so it needed to support those measurements (especially the 36” depth). I’ve only had it two weeks, but it’s been great so far: moves up/down quickly, the memory positions work well (I use all 3: sit, stand, walking pad). Installation took about 20 minutes and was pretty easy once I under what the directions were telling me to do. It feels sturdy and secure. ... show more

  • A good buy
Color: Black
Seems expensive compared to the hundreds of other options out there, but I ultimately chose this standing desk frame for its two year warranty, 3-tier legs, dual motor setup and lift capacity, and the three memory settings for the height adjustment. The parts seemed to be a good quality with no finish issues, but it took a good while to install on my solid walnut 60x25x1.5" 50lb desktop since I wanted alignment and positioning to be perfect. I also took the opportunity to swap out the short desktop screws with longer ones, as well as the adjustable leveling feet with lockable casters (M8x20mm threads) to help move the desk around more easily. Height adjustment is smooth and reasonably quiet, and the memory settings work flawlessly. The desk is a little wobbly at my usual 41" height level, but it's more noticeable for me since I have an ultra wide monitor on an extendible/adjustable arm clamp mount. It's not a serious issue though and there's no perceived wobble at sitting heights. I originally had issues with an E-2 error whenever trying to raise the desk height because the troubleshooting manual was lost in the packaging material, but the seller patiently worked with me to reduce some related safety/sensitivity settings. ... show more

  • great for the money
Color: Grey
i made a LARGE desk out of this (84x36). Its stable but has a slight wobble at standing desk height. I did lay on it and press the button to go from sitting to standing height and it lifted me up (slowly) but it definitely got the job done with minimal effort (I weigh 190lbs and had 2 monitors on my desk too). Seems pretty heavy duty (the motors). the wobble would be removed it the brackets for stability were longer and if there was a middle bracket too. My only beef. But the smaller the desk the less the wobble will be ... show more

  • Phenomenal… Update, recurring connection errors
Color: Black
The media could not be loaded. Great quality, sturdy all the way up, fast motors. I have a 96” x 24” x 2” butcher block on top of it with a large PC. No problems with weight distribution over a maximum size surface. Electronics work well. Update… Getting a recurring E-3 error indicating a plug has been disconnected, but none are disconnected. when raising the desk the legs raise slightly uneven before the error appears. It is difficult to reset, have to unplug it a few times before it lets me lower it all the way down which evens out the height difference and temporarily resolves the issue. not reliable ... show more
