  • Hilarious, Honest and a Joy to Watch
I came to this series very late. In fact my first time watching this was after the series ended. In total transparency, as an Asian-American I was quite leery of watching this show. All too often, especially in comedies, we've been portrayed as clownish caricatures of our true selves. It's not an exaggeration to say that in the stand-up comedy world, comedians will often use Asians as the butt of their jokes (most times to save their routine when it's crashing). And the continued whitewashing of Asian characters in movies, like Ghost in the Shell and Dr. Strange, gave me no indication that Hollywood was changing its mindset. I didn't want to subject myself to more of the same. How wrong I was! I am not the child of immigrants but I am in many ways Eddie Huang. I grew up surrounded by no one that looked like me. I fell in love with R&B, Funk and Jazz music (Hip Hop came after my time) and my biggest sports idol was Walter Payton. Had it not been for my parents and the emergence of Bruce Lee during my childhood, I would never have known about the virtues my own Asian heritage. And although I had many childhood friends, my experiences with them were very much of an island unto myself. They loved me yes, and to this day many are still with me (including the best man at my wedding! :) ), but none could relate to me as they could to each other. Fresh Off the Boat captures those challenges so wonderfully and so accurately that I find myself laughing at the jokes and circumstances not just because they're funny but because they are also memories of events that I lived through. The names are different and the venue is too, but when all is said and done, the events are real. What I was pleasantly surprised to find out however was how well received the show has been for non-Asians. The show can be very cutting and does not shy away from showing the ridiculous and clownish behavior of racism. It will at times force non-Asians to take a look at themselves in a way that may not be pleasant. But the writers are very good at doing this in a way that is not preachy or with righteous indignation. And of course the humor they lace it with helps to make the point in such a way that is easy and makes them laugh at themselves instead of becoming defensive. Finally, what I think is most wonderful about the show is that through the template of their Asian culture, the Huang's show themselves to be no different than any other family in this world. Because yes, Asians do love each other just like everyone else. Their love and devotion to each other is the center of their world. And that, above all else, is universal. Constance Wu, Randall Park, your performances are hilarious, fun and tender all at the same time. To you and all the writers and producers who gave this show a chance... thank you. ... show more

  • Sixth season has gone downhill
The first, second, third, and fourth seasons were good, but the series is going downhill. Still great, but not as good as the first 4 seasons.
