  • It is a comprehensive work for genealogists
This book tells it all in plain understandable language. I was very pleased by the format and how the author presented the information to read and understand the French records available on line. I highly recommend this book to anyone new to genealogy and to those not so new but still needing to learn more. ... show more

  • Absolute Must-Have for English Speakers Seeking French Records
I cannot believe how many "Ah-ha" moments I have had since reading this book. After reading the Appendix, I am in the middle of Chapter 28 (with several more chapters to go), yet I have already learned so much! I have wondered why certain French-Canadian ancestors are so hard to find, and this book has already explained the reasons and possible remedies. The author clearly has the soul of a teacher, because the explanations are clear and sometimes repeated for emphasis, which is helpful when consuming large amounts of information. There are numerous variations in name spellings and pronunciations when comparing English and French, yet you will be prepared to tackle them when you read this book. I knew the author's podcast was good (especially the Show Notes), and this book has already helped me understand why certain French words are pronounced in ways I do not expect. Seriously, if you enjoy the thrill of deciphering your ancestor's records in the original French, yet you lack knowledge of the language, then please, get this book! ... show more

If you have French-Canadian ancestors you are researching and you don’t know French, then this book is a MUST. It is my bible for translating church records!

  • A handy guide for researching French-Canadian ancestry
This gem of a book provides lots of useful information for English-speaking family historians exploring their French-Canadian roots. Information is provided in clear and concise format, with lots of tables and examples. The various names our ancestors used and the variety of spellings of those names in the records makes research challenging. I particularly like the section on pronunciation of French letters and words, making it easier to understand why our ancestors’ names were spelled in so many ways. The author includes translations of terms frequently found in the church records of baptisms, marriages, and deaths. All of this, and much more, makes it easier to find our forebears in the records and to understand what those records are saying. ... show more
