  • Nice Buttery Sound that is Perfect for Music in a Relatively Huge Cabinet
Color: Gloss Black
I picked up a pair of these Focal Aria 906s from the second hand market owned by a classy musician that upgraded to Magnepan 1.7i, and I conducted a mini comparison in my living room. I compared these to my Paradigm Signature S1s with beryllium dome tweeters and my KEF LS50s as seen in the picture. Focals are larger than any other bookshelves I’ve ever owned, so I immediately was surprised by the massive amount of bass that they produce, and I own two Dynamo 700 subwoofers myself! With these, you hardly need a sub if ever. This is a subjective review, so I compare these speakers based on music, tv, and movies with my Marantz 5011 receiver: For TV, Focals were the worst of the three. Dialogs have some boominess to them that I disliked. If you don’t have a center channel speaker, these are not the best for TV use alone. KEFs were the most clear on dialogs followed by Paradigms in my opinion. However, KEFs have a directional sound, so if you have a large living room, you may want to consider more open speakers. For movies, I preferred Focals over KEFs, and Paradigms came first. The openness of the dims are just something you would miss with the other two. For music, which was the most important for me, I came to the conclusion that all of them are good in different types of music. KEF is the winner in anything with vocals either male or female. Paradigms are the best in complex multi-instrument music and classical, so I guess in a way they have better separation. Focals are the best in pop, alternative, and rock, and they have a pleasant soundstage. My friend and I did a blind test, and we picked different speakers as our best choice for different songs. I read in the past that Focal Aria 906s have a bright sound, but I didn’t find them to be harsh or bright at all. If anything, they are very buttery! Both KEF and Paradigm are much brighter with less bass. I thought the bass is sometimes too much on Focals, but it’s easy to fix with correct tuning. As a matter of fact, I liked the Focals so much that I ordered a refurbished pair of 905s just to compare and see if they are better with the vocals while having less bass. I will write a review for the 905s when I get them later. These Focals are very good speakers, and with the occasional sales price or the second hand market, you cannot really go wrong with them. They are amazing for music with lots of bass, and their only downside seems to be their huge size for me. With the three speakers that I tested, I came to the conclusion that all the speakers in the sub 2K category should perform extremely well with subtle differences, and each performs better in one area or another. As anything audio, people like different sound signatures, so give these Focals a chance on your next audition. *** Update July 2018: I had a chance to pick up a refurbished pair of 905s and do a side-by-side test with my 906s, and it's "really" a tough choice! Focal 905s have a very good bass response and clear highs, and finding a winner between the two is very difficult. I went back-and-forth with the same amp many times, and they are very close to each other. You would be happy with either one, but if you want to know about the subtle differences, here we go: Aria 906 lows are more like feel it with your entire body, while 905 has more of an audible effect with bass. I think 906's bass is more refined, buttery, and blended. However, if you crossover 905s, they would be as good! Without a subwoofer and if you can stomach the larger speaker, go with 906. If you have a sub already, then there is a tiny bit advantage with the slightly bigger soundstage that 906 produces, but it's not too obvious. Overall, Focal did a very good job with Aria line, and no wonder why they are using the same woofer materials (flax) in the new Kanta series, with their amazing beryllium tweeters, and eliminating the Electra line altogether. I guess it's a good time to pick up the Electra 1008s or 1028s, if you prefer the W sandwich woofer sound better. ... show more
