  • Well written book for 5-7 grade
Entertaining and educational. I learned about the WASP's, the female Air Force pilots in WW II. This was fictional but described aspects of the history of where the pilot's group came from, interesting detail. Also the book has an underlying Growth Mindset tone to it, as well as a "women and do anything" theme, both are good messages for the youth of today. I also enjoyed the real world pictures of the WASP's and some of the details of the history of the group. ... show more

  • Read it in one sitting. My daughter's going to love it.
I read the first chapter aloud to my kids. They were enjoying the banter between Dawn and Samantha, (giggled at Samantha calling the town Dawn was moving to Stinkwater) and then it was bedtime. After putting them to bed, I kept going and read the whole book. That's my first compliment to pay the author; the flow, character development and story arc are wonderful. Another reason I loved this book is that a young girl is the central character and she has a lot of personal character. Dawn dreams big dreams, and more importantly, acts with purpose to achieve them. I am excited for my daughter to read the rest of the book, and hope she wants to emulate Dawn by getting back on the horse every time she's bucked off, by volunteering and serving for causes she believes in, by choosing good friends and courageously dealing with bullies. There's lots of entertaining dialogue throughout which is probably a big reason I kept binge-reading. The final reason I'm recommending this book is the historical value. I'd never heard of the WASP program, or balloon bombs and it was fun to spend time down the Google rabbit hole about these subjects after I finished the book. The photos at the back of the book are also very cool. Read it, I think you'll love it too. ... show more

  • Masterfully telling a story that needed to be told
I have been a WW2 history buff for many years, but this was the first I had heard about the Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP). The author was able to take transform a precious piece of American history that had been overlooked amongst the millions of stories of human strife, sacrifice and heroism that a world changing event like WW2 creates and weave it into a brilliant archetypal narrative that resonates with all of us at all ages. An amazing historical artifact presented in a way that is engaging to readers of all ages. It’s a story that needed telling and to be told well, and to that, the author knocked it out of the park. Will be sharing come Christmas. ... show more

  • Never knew!!
I've got 3 kids, and am glad I have another book for them to read. I enjoyed reading this one together with my youngest boy. This one is pretty good, inspiring. I didn't know about women pilots in WW2, and this book does a great job of painting a picture for me. I feel this book will be very empowering for my daughter as well. ... show more

  • Powerful message of Love, Strength, Diligence and Persistent Pursuit of Excellence
My wife and I had the privilege of raising four daughters to adults and, as youth, they each would have enjoyed the joy of hearing this wonderful story of developing a strong character and creative spirit in a young woman. Every parent or mentor to young women will consider this book a foundational and realistic look into a life enjoyed through love, diligence and the persistent pursuit of making good decisions and overcoming setbacks whether self-induced or circumstantial. I look forward to the next installment in the life of Dawn Springfield! ... show more

  • Inspirational story for all of us
A wonderful stirring story for young readers about their peer of years ago named Dawn, who, being caught up by the cataclysmic events of World War II, was swept through many a dramatic experience of her life - not the least of which were inspirations from and friendships with members of the illustrious WASPS, a squadron of fearless, all-women pilots who defied danger while executing their country’s critical wartime missions. A great read. ... show more

  • A Powerful Voice for a Story that Needs to be Heard
I bought this for myself, my sisters, and my 9-year-old nieces in Texas, and we all LOVED it. One of my sisters is a history teacher, and in her humble opinion, this is one of the most empowering women's books she's ever read. As a female pilot, I humbly admit I had never heard about this story until now. It's a beautiful recount of a critical time in American history told through the eyes of a young girl who had her own adventures during WWII. I don't want to spoil it for future readers with any detail... I can only highly recommend this book to all WWII history buffs, children, and adults who would enjoy a quick read and an important story worth knowing! ... show more
