Came packaged beautifully. None of the wood was damaged, and each has a plastic protective shrink wrap around it to keep it from getting dirty or dusty during shipping. They are painted nicely and are super lightweight. This means less initial weight on the drywall anchors and screws. Some great thing to note is that it came with a miniature level! The drywall anchors are also of good quality, which I have found to be extremely important since hanging so many things on my walls lately. It also comes with extra screws and a little screwdriver. Which is awesome if you don't have one handy. It's a bit difficult putting on the metal brackets if you decide to put them on the bottom side of the shelves. They really need to include one of those L shaped screwdrivers for that. Not a huge deal since I've got a bunch of tools. Putting them up on the wall wasn't very difficult, but I REALLY wish they had included a recommended size drill bit to use for drilling the hole for the drywall anchors. I hate having to guess... the small level was seriously a nice touch since no other shelves I've ordered have ever come with one. They look very nice up on the wall, and I'm very pleased with this purchase. Beautiful shelves! ... show more

It was a little difficult to evaluate this product, specifically pertaining to the material of the actual shelves. I studied the description carefully before ordering and I learned the shelves are made from solid Paulownia wood. I did some more research and discovered that this wood variety is a hardwood. Wiki has this description as part of its very long entry, "Paulownia wood is very light, fine-grained, and warp-resistant. It is the fastest-growing hardwood. It is used for chests, boxes, and clogs (geta). " Well, I have always thought as hardwoods being, well, hard so I ordered the set. When the shelf kit arrived I was curious to examine the wood to see if it was, first: real wood and second what the nature of that wood was. Upon looking at it I thought this grain and finishing is too perfect and I started to think it was some kind of composite, almost like a hard foam; the shelf units are very light. I decided to run my nail across the surface to see if I could discern the true nature of the material. My nail made an indent into the surface, with very little pressure. See photo. I examined each shelf carefully and after seeing different parts up close I came to the conclusion that it was not a man-made composite but was actual wood. Whether it is a veneer I am not sure, I would have to cut it to find out for sure and I did not want to do that because they do have a really nice look. However, as discovered by my nail, the surface of this wood is very soft, almost like a balsa wood but not quite so soft. I thought that a soft surface like this is not the best wood for use as a shelf, anything heavy or with sharp edges placed on them would mar them and accumulate indentations like my fingernail produced. All that being said I have to say these shelves are quite attractive. I do not know why this wood is described as a hardwood by Wiki, as they are soft. Perhaps this variety of Paulownia is a softer than other varieties. Wiki says, "Paulownia (/pɔːˈloʊniə/ paw-LOH-nee-ə) is a genus of seven to 17 species of hardwood tree (depending on taxonomic authority) in the family Paulowniaceae". I don't really know but it was very interesting researching the wood that was used to make these shelves. At first I was going to give this product 4 stars but after writing the above I changed my mind and gave it the highest rating of 5 stars. I concluded that the seller's description is basically correct and the look and feel of these shelves is really nice, except for the softness I described. The description suggests that you can assemble these as shown in the listing photos with the wood shelves inside the metal brackets or you can mount them on the outside, on top of the bracket. The latter method is the more traditional way to configure them and I will probably do them that way, or perhaps a combination of both ways since you get 5 shelves. However, if you do mount the shelves on the top there will be a slight gap where the shelf meets the wall, unless you slide it forward so it overhangs the front. Not a big deal and it's nice to have these two options. For $24.00 this is a really nice shelf ensemble, just be aware of the softness of the wood. I will be checking periodically on this Amazon listing to read other reviews and find out if anyone else has anything to add about the wood used. This has been a very interesting experience in getting these shelves, especially reading about the type of wood and the obscure contradictions of my research. ... show more

I’m not unhappy with these, but nothing that made me go “wow” either so I’ll stick with a four star. - the brackets appear well made with a smooth finish. On the thinner side, but designed to hold the size and weight of the shelves they come with so should be fine. - even though I looked at the measurements, I was still a little surprised how not very deep these are. This will actually work well for above my toilet as intended, but be sure to pull out a measuring tape to judge before buying. They are less deep than they appear in the pictures. - the wood is cheap if even wood (highly doubtful). The same paper light substance that keeps coming on various products I order. HOWEVER, unlike other products, their finish on whatever it is is nice and without noticeable seams. So I was very happy with that. I don’t need it to be wood as long as it looks nice. But often people like to know so wanted to share. - I like that you can mount these on top of the brackets or through the brackets for a different look. - I also liked that these are various lengths to add some dimension and variety to my wall rather than just a few shelves.
