I am super excited about this hatchet-sized maul. We cut our logs to length with a chainsaw, but then need to split them. This maul does a far better job than an axe or hatchet. Every time I struck an oak log, I got a wood wedge or kindling stick. It's a perfect single-purpose tool. Highly recommended. See the photo. UPDATE: We liked this little guy so much we bought the Fiskars X25 6lb maul for bigger jobs. Now the little guy sits on the porch to split big chunks, while the X25 lives down in the shed where we had two cords of rounds delivered this winter. Now we split rounds with the X25, then cut the larger wedges down to size as necessary once they make it to the woodstove. Very happy with both products. ... show more

Best for splitting wood for kindling

I love this little guy! So much better than a hatchet for splitting wood into kindling! I take this on every camping trip and use it every time we make a camp fire. I'll never use a hatchet again for kindling. Easy one swing full split. No getting stuck and smashing the wood on the ground or rock to make it split, so it's much safer. Splits vs Chops
Style: Pro IsoCore 2.5 lb Maul
This is making a big step forward in my firewood tool collection! I burn mostly American Elm and use a gas powered 26 ton splitter for this stuff. However, I became aware of pine wood poles that were available for sale. Bone dry, 16 feet long 6-10" diameter. These are salvaged from the Oregon forest as beetle killed timber. Straight and growing close together. This makes for very small side branches (knots). Cut and loaded 5' long sections. 73yrs old so the fatter ones were all I could handle. Built a super log holder to stack em in. Cut 12 inches long to fill my shed. The Fiskar 2.5 lb. maul can split these rounds in half with one hand and the fatter ones, I do use two hands to get speed on the head way faster. Working close to the ground on a large low block...not standing up keeps my back straight. I can split the short rounds way faster and funner than the hydraulic can and with a system approach I now have tons of wood. This tool is for splitting not chopping. But for crying out loud don't beat it with a sledge! It will out live me because I will not abuse it. AND IT IS BUILT TO LAST. BUY IT ...but make sure it fits the job man... think! ... show more

The cover always falls off

This works great but the protective cover (while you use the other end) does not stay snapped. We wound up having to use several rubber bands to hold it in place. Otherwise, it is great.

INCLUDEDS BLADE GUARD

the normal quality you would expect for a Fiskars product. I was trying to find out if it came with a blade guard. It did not seem to be mentioned in the listing. It does come with one. Blessings, John 20:29

Sturdy design

This went into my go-kit, I have not had a chance to used it. Appears super sturdy and functional. It's a nice size for a go-kit, camping, back packing.
