  • Everything I wanted and more
***I want to start off by letting people know that the choco summon code is working. You need to input the code that was sent to your email on PSN. Then after you download it, in the options menu in game...scroll to system...then scroll to DLC and there you activate the downloaded summons.*** Now that that's out of the way, I want people to know this is a full complete game on it's own. Do not worry about some people say, this being a partial game. The game is designed as multiple parts (is the Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring a partial movie???), but each part is built as a standalone 30+ hour action RPG. Next, this is not the same Final Fantasy VII some people know and love. Yes it has mostly the same characters and there are plot structures this game follows, however, each character is far more fleshed out. You really grow even more attached to each character because you have time to explore their personalities and their personal lives There are entire areas that were never in the original game, as well as certain events that happen in the Remake that did not happen in the original. Most of all, the ending WILL SHOCK YOU if you are a fan of FFVII the original. It goes in a completely different direction from the original. Without spoiling too much, let me tell you you will LOVE it (if you wanted it to be different and fresh) or you will HATE it (if you wanted it to be a carbon copy of the original). Personally I wanted the team at Square to flex their imagination, and refresh the plot and they did that while also staying true to the characters. In addition to the main story plot, which will last you around 25-30 hours, there are secondary missions you can take on. These are more traditional RPG secondary missions, which some people may find boring while others may appreciate (helping a little girl find cats isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I thought it was endearing). There is plenty to do, and if you prefer to stick to the main storyline...you can do that as well. Your mileage will vary when it comes to these secondary missions depending on your taste. Combat is nothing short of incredible. There is not much I could really argue here that needs to be fixed, or revamped. Starting off with combat is the ATB gauge. The original FFVII was a turn based game, which you had to wait for your "A.ctive T.ime B.attle" gauge to build before you could attack. FFVII Remake is real time action, but intelligently revitalizes the ATB gauge by slowing down time and allowing the player to use special powerful attacks, items (such as healing items), and using magic. You build this mete by attacking enemies, blocking attacks, and receiving damage. This keeps the combat highly strategic in knowing when to use your meter on an item or attack at the right time, and giving you the time to think midst battle by slowing down the action. You can also switch between up to 3 characters at once just like a traditional turn based RPG. Using different combinations of special abilities and attacks are critical for late game combat, and really challenges the player in a similar tactical manner that a turn based RPG does. Absolute brilliance. Each character has a selection of weapons to choose from, and each weapon has its own unique abilities/upgrade structure that makes it unique. For example, one particular weapon might build main character Cloud by giving him more health so that if you like to play the bruiser type, you can do that. If you like casting magic spells using materia, which I will get to materia more detailed in a second, then you can do that as well. This is a through and through RPG, with stats and leveling to match. The weapon stat bonuses, and unique weapon abilities prompts you to try out different builds, and to experiment. Combined with the return of materia from the original FFVII, the combat can be quite complex with layers of depth. Materia allows the player to cast magic, grants special unique abilities, gives you stat bonuses, or allows you to summon an extremely powerful ally (once you've taken enough damage or built up your summon meter in combat). Limit breaks also make a return from the original game. These are extremely powerful and flashy attacks that build over time by receiving damage from an opponent or staggering your enemies. Staggering is a new feature in the game, which can be applied to most if not all enemies in the game, adding a layer of depth to the combat that encourages you to be aggressive and exploit enemies' weaknesses. Once staggered, the enemy is in a state where they take massive amounts of damage from your regular attacks and your characters' secondary attack, building the atb gauge much faster. Each character has a normal attack (square button) and a secondary attack (triangle button) uniquely tied to that character. Cloud for example can attack normally with his normal attacks doing a moderate amount of damage. When you activate his secondary attack, Cloud changes his regular "operator" stance into his "punisher" stance. By doing so Cloud moves much more slowly, but he also deals much more damage. He also gains a counter ability, by holding the block button Cloud will automatically counter attack enemies physical attacks (does not work on projectiles and magic). Dodging while in this stance reverts Cloud back into his normal "operator" stance. This, again, adds another layer of depth to the combat. Knowing each characters' abilities to fully appreciate the combat system is a welcome feature the game offers. While the game offers you great advancements to gameplay and story, there are some areas where the game falters. Final Fantasy VII pushes the, now aged, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro quite hard. The game is absolutely stunning at it's best, and it's at a fault for that because anything that doesn't match up to these incredible set pieces within the game sticks out like a sore thumb. An example, the opening mission is jaw droppingly gorgeous. High resolution textures, incredible lighting, the best character models I've ever seen in a video game ever running real time. After you complete the first mission, and you make your way out of the beginning area you make it to Seventh Heaven Bar (an important area you revisit multiple times). There are texture disparities on massive areas of the ground in the slums as an example. For me this necessarily wasn't a make or break to purchase the game one bit, however, it does show the aging hardware of the PlayStation 4 being pushed to the limit. I can't even imagine what the game will look like once the PlayStation 5 releases and runs the game like it's probably designed to be. Overall the graphics are stellar, but there are areas in the game where you will notice some textures that are not on par with some of the other more amazing textures. Luckily, the overall graphic fidelity of the games is exceptionally beautiful. In conclusion, I believe Final Fantasy VII Remake is amongst the best games you can purchase on any system to date. It is far and above the quality of the original game, while retaining all the charm that was the original. The game's scope for what the developers are trying to accomplish are lofty, and the game they have delivered is A+. I can easily reccomend this to both people who have and have not played the original. It has something for everyone with the ATB combat system, the changes in story, and a magnificent ending that is sure to create much chatter amongst gamers. ... show more

  • 9.8~/10 game! Near flawless and very fun game overall.
There are a few minor complaints, such as transferring rows of materia over to characters gets tedious. It would be better if you could select and move over several at a time! And some textures are surprisingly low resolution. Everything else? Just superb. Battle system - 10/10. A great mix of real time with options for going through a menu, selecting the next ability to use that uses ATB. You also have shortcuts to assign abilities for quick use and light/heavy attacks that do several different things depending on the character. For Cloud, heavy attacks are stronger and "blocking" while in heavy stance mode counters all physical attacks. For Barret, his "heavy attack" is a weapon skill that does a lot of damage while quickly raising ATB. Every character, spell, ability, materia, and equipment has a purpose and there are so many ways to play each character and different ways how to fight each enemy/boss. Music - 10/10. Very surprising how beautiful all the new tracks are and how they've integrated the classic themes into this game. It flows so incredibly well with every scene, and it's my favorite OST for the past 2 years since Nier: Automata! Story - 9.5/10. I only say this because some choices are a little strange, and some things could have been expanded on mildly. But the good far far outweighs the bad! It's such a fun story and it leaves you wanting to know more. There's so much detail into every aspect of the character and world, how they really make it feel like it's a real and living world. The relationship between each character is special and the story itself never gets boring. It's funny, sad, cool, romantic, and sometimes a little awkward or weird. The dialogue even during some of the slower parts of the game keeps you entertained too! The voice actors all did such an amazing job. This first game in the Final Fantasy VII Project definitely leaves us wanting more and so many people are theorizing on what will happen in the next part. Graphics - 9.5/10. Nearly all the time, everything just looks flawless. It's a really beautiful game with lots of amazing cinematics - but even the in-game gameplay looks really good to the point sometimes I can't tell if it's gameplay or cinematic cutscene. Taking advantage of the screenshots will net you many beautiful images worthy of being a wallpaper of your own! Nostalgia - 10/10. If you haven't played FF or FFVII before, you'll probably still love this game if you enjoy typical fantasy genre games and JRPGs. But for those with nostalgia, they really did this game justice! It is absolutely beautiful to see, hear, and experience in high definition graphics. All in all, there are very few things that are actually wrong with the game. For most people (not all) who don't like the game - it's mostly because it doesn't fit to what they imagined the game would be, not because they actually did/could not enjoy it. As it is a remake and also re-imagining of the 1997 classic, there will no doubt be new challenges in creating this game and it will go in a different direction even if a little bit only so no doubt people will be displeased. Every and anything has at least one person complaining about it - you can't please everyone! But to people who loved FFVII and are willing to give it a chance, there's no real reason why they wouldn't enjoy this. It's not how they would have remade the game, but it's definitely the right business choice to have made it the way Square Enix did. This game did not disappoint us the way that FFXV or FFXIII did (even though they sold well), and outside of FFXIV:ARR/FFXI (which are both MMOs but all have done actually really well), Square Enix hasn't really had a main numbered FF title be considered globally and massively successful with its fans since 2006 with FFXII. So it's been a long time and many fans have been left feeling like this success would never come, but it's finally here. The story being expanded was also a great choice because after having fully finished this game 100%, I can attest that I am still excited for more story. If this was a 1 to 1 scale of the original, it would have had to have been very rushed with much smaller areas and content to get through the entire world of FFVII in one game. ... show more
