  • Unremarkable at this price point, which is probably a good thing.
Color: Silver
****revised upward from 4 to 5 stars*** I think its performance at this price point deserves 5 stars. After increased critical listening time, and evaluating with various headphones and amplifiers, and A/B testing against my other DACs, im appreciating this DAC more. I still think the low end could use a little more impact and definition, and it is slightly more relaxed than my preference, but it is darn good. Also, I read a review that upgrading to a Gold Lion tubes improves the low end, and while I haven't yet tried it on this item, I did achieve similar results by swapping Gold Lions into my Muzishare tube speaker amp. I find myself gravitating more to this DAC than the others in my headphone rig (Musician Pegasus, EF400, Grace SDAC, K11 R2R). It's not the last word on detail or dynamics, or low end impact, but it is a really good DAC that is exceptional at this price point. I think the headline of my original review and the use of the word "unremarkable" may seem negative, which is not intended. Often times a piece of audio gear will have some annoying sonic trait that becomes more perceptible the more I listen to it. The absence of that with this device is a very good thing. ***Original Review**** This DAC sounds fine. At this price. If it doesnt have any annoying sonic quirks, that is a win. Like my Hifiman EF400, and unlike my Musician Pegasus, this DAC sounds better in NOS mode. It isnt as holographic as the EF400 in NOS mode, but there is more dimension to the sound with oversampling off. And, unlike the original version of the Pegasus, there isnt too much roll off without oversampling. This DAC sounds unremarkable to me. Nothing annoying about its sonics (which is a win at this price point), but nothing special about it either, except to say that the R2R implementation is devoid of any of the glassiness present in many delta-sigma DACs. I think the overall sound quality is slightly inferior to the DAC section of the EF400, but this item doesnt have the EF400's flaw where lossless files in NOS mode exhibit vinyl-like clicks, so in that regard the Fiio is superior. There is a bit of a relaxed quality to this unit's tone, which im guessing is a function of the tubes. I dislike this trait in this case, but it is a minor gripe. I generally like the harmonic content and warmth that tube bring to the table, but not a fan of what I hear with this device in this regard. Sonically it reminds me of the Monolith Cavallo Liquid Platinum hybrid tube amp, which deadens the sound to a fault, but the FIIO does this to a lesser extent. There is less resolution and detail than my otherwise unremarkable Musician Pegasus, an R2R DAC that costs 3x what this item does. If I had to pick out a sonic flaw, I would say that the bass lacks a bit of nuance and texture. The FIIO DAC does succeed in providing a sound quality that lacks the sonic drawbacks of delta-sigma DACs in this price range, and I would say that it meets or exceeds the sound quality of other DACs in its price range. Therefore I recommend it, just dont expect a sonic revelation. ... show more

  • Great value-not very warm
Color: Black
I have a very clean set of speakers (Focal) and that combination of the rather lifeless sound of digital I needed something to put some "meat on the bones " This did the trick. It sounds juicer but I would d stop short of warm. Background vocals sound a bit more present. I have heard that I need to tubes to "break in" so I might have to come back then. The light is a but bright but the VU meters are a sweet bonus! 😁 ... show more

  • Great Dac that gives that warm tube sound
Color: Silver
Got this DAC for my CD collection. My Cd player has two outputs ran RCA Output to Preamp & ran digital coaxial output on Cd player to the Fiio Warmer R2R. With this set up I’m able to switch between the Cd player output and the Fiio Warmer R2R output and compare the difference in the sound. The Fiio gave most recordings a warmer vinyl like sound, but noticed some recordings I could hear no difference mainly newer CDs that had been remastered. The place that the Fiio really shined is when I played digital files from my laptop via the usb. This really cleaned up the sound. I’m very happy with this purchase ... show more

  • Not going to come close to sound quality in price bracket great value
Color: Black
Excellent value. I have it paired with fiio k17 works great. Just make sure you use balanced connection, there is a slight dB drop with RCA. I rolled tubes in it, sounds Devine. It can play in DSD512. I wouldn't recommend rolling the tubes, it sounds slightly better with tubes I rolled in, but they cost almost as much as the warmer. Stock tubes are plenty good. ... show more

  • Nice Upgrade with VU meters, pleasing sound
Color: Black
For me, this is a step up from the lower cost entry level DACs I've owned, including the Schiit Modi and SMSL SU-1. In comparison to my SU-1, the FIIO Warmer is gigantic. On aesthetics, I like the VU meters, which reminds me of some of the older receivers and amps that I used to own. The VU meters don't really tell me anything, but adds to the ambience. For my setup, I have a Wiim Pro outputting via coaxial to the FIIO Warmer and mainly listen to hi-res music via Qobuz. I am utilizing the unbalanced outputs since my amp does not support balanced. I've been listening to it over the last few days, and I do like the sound. It feels warmer and bass is definitely punchier compared to the SU-1. Hard to say if the improvement I'm perceiving is because of R2R, tubes or a combination. Due to the tubes, I will say that this DAC gets very warm. Definitely want to give it room for ventilation. The unit also has a Toslink and USB input. I have a CD player, but am connecting it through the Wiim to keep it simple, but nice to have the option of connect it directly to the DAC as well. For USB, I expect that I will on occasion utilize it to connect my iPhone directly to it, for when I want to use Apple Music and get lossless audio from it. The DAC also allows for switching between NOS and OS. However, I'm a bit confused if this works with the SPDIF connections as I've read that some are saying it only works with USB. With my coaxial connection, I do feel there's a difference between NOS and OS, but not 100% sure if that's the case or if I'm imagining it. In summary, I really like the DAC. It pairs well with my system and I feel is a nice step up from an entry level DAC. At this price, it's 4X the cost of a SU-1, which is a sizable jump. I do feel that it's worth it for the sound improvement I'm hearing and it looks nice. ... show more

  • Veiled midfi sound. Equipment synergy required. Looks great though!
Color: Silver
3.4 Stars. I want to love this DAC but it sounds SO veiled. Imagine covering your speakers with heavy blankets. That's the kind of "warm" sound you'll get from this DAC. It really detracts from the otherwise pleasant and relaxed presentation it offers. Honestly my FIIO KA15 dongle DAC sounds better overall. My Topping E50, Schiit Bifrost, RME ADI-2, all offer a far less veiled sound and don't have the "crunch" of the Warmer in OS mode. My primary use for this DAC now is for background listening. It is very good at that. Especially a nice Lo-Fi chill mix while taking care of business around the house. It's only when you sit down and really start listening to it that you start noticing the flaws. Equipment synergy is an absolute must! This DAC rolls off low frequencies when used with low K impedance inputs. The best sound I found was in NOS mode paired with my Klipsch Reference Premiere towers powered by Schiit Vidars in monobloc mode. It helped soften up the sometimes fatiguing treble and is quite lovely with female singers and acoustic tracks. It's far too muddy to pair with my Philharmonic BMR standmount speakers in a treated audio room. It just doesn't have the clarity or detail required from a highly revealing, but neutral sounding setup. The DAC itself was super easy to setup since there are minimal options for configuring. Simply feed it a digital source, connect RCAs or XLRs, power, then turn the thing on. Choose an input and toggle the OS / NOS switch as desired. Tube rolling is a NIGHTMARE. There's a bajillion screws holding this thing together. The board that holds the tubes feels flimsy and I was very worried I would break it when installing some Gold Lions. The tubes are just a buffer, so the resulting change in sound was very minor considering the cost of the upgrade tubes. It's been "compatible" with every speaker and headphone system I've connected it too. My second favorite pairing was with my DarkVoice. There was some synergy there that I appreciated with no bass rolloff, but the DarkVoice is already a bassy amp when used with my low impedance Focals. I like that the power supply is integrated so no giant wall warts taking up outlet space. It has proved to be a silent DAC with zero tube rush or other silly noises tubes always make. I love the VU meters. I love the glowing face and the silver case. I just don't love the sound. You can get rid of some of the veil by turning on OS mode when using USB, but then it sounds a bit crunchy and unrefined. Overall this is a great looking DAC that sounds mid. I do enjoy it frequently for background listening I would only recommend it if you already have a collection of DACs and just want to play around with something different, or you can find that unicorn level of synergy. ... show more

  • Best DAC I've ever owned!
Color: Black
Best DAC I've ever owned! I use it with the Wiim Ultra DLNA out the the Warmer and into an Emotiva A2+. Beautiful open sound stage and tube warmth. Exactly what I was hoping it would be.
