Don't like where set screw is bar bar (lever)

  • Nice tremolo, but some annoyances
Full disclosure: I purchased this product direct from the vendor (although that vendor is also here on Amazon). I feel there are some issues with this product that, while not showstopers, should be made known, and I have not seen them mentioned anywhere else. Firstly, this is a very nice tremolo unit. Set up correctly, this 2-point design has proven to have outstanding tuning stability, and the bent steel saddles really give my Strat project a vintage vibe. And the pop-in tremolo arm design is an improvement over the vintage threaded arms, in my opinion. (Its tension can be adjusted via a set screw that is embedded in the trem block, and is exposed when you push the trem arm down.) Overall, it's the best of old and new. Now for the bizarre. A traditional tremolo claw mounting screw is a #8 screw (1/8" shaft diameter), typically 1-1/2" to 1-3/4" long. Considering the amount of spring tension these scres need to counteract, that is an appropriate size. (I usually have nearly at least 1/2" of a screw's shaft exposed in the cavity, so that leaves plenty of length embedded in the guitar body.) In this particular tremolo, Fender inexplicably supplies screws that appear to be #6 (7/64"?) and are 1" long (including the head!). I test fit them into a brand new Fender American PROFESSIONAL Strat body (I emphasize that because this is marketed as an American Professional Tremolo), and it was immediately clear that the #6 screws could not adequately grip into the #8 holes that were already in the body. And of course the 1" overall length would leave very little actual thread embedded in the body -- probably < 1/4" with my current setup using 3 tension springs. So, I ended up supplying my own screws. (I used conventional bolt-on neck screws, which threaded into the body's factory trem claw screw holes perfectly.) Fender USA was beyond useless in explaining why they chose these to spec these undersized screws. I'll also add that the tremolo tip included did not have any internal threads, so they cannot be threaded into the tremolo arm. I'm not sure if this was a one-off manufacturing defect or an incorrectly supplied part, but now I'm trying to obtain a replacement tip, which is complicated by the fact that (a) Fender will not send me a replacement, and (b) these tips are not sold seperately. In summary: While I am pleased with the overall performance of this tremolo, my experience was marred by having to source my own screws, and dealing with the fact that the tips are not sold seperately. (And Fender customer support did themselves no favors with their thoroughly inadequate email response.) If I could do this all over again, I would have chosen the American Deluxe bridge 007-7092-049, which is of similar pop-in arm design, but the tips are readily available on their own, and comes with bridge mounting studs (which in my case I had to order seperately). But keep in mind it comes with block saddles rather than bent steel saddles. ... show more
