  • A very nice gimbal for phone, action cams and smaller DSLR
Size: SCORP Mini-2 Color: Black&White
This is the first gimbal I've gotten, though I also already have the Feiyu Pocket 2s all-in-one pocket gimbal cam which I also like. The Scorp Mini-2 gimbal is well made from plastic and metal and comes with all the fittings you need to mount a smartphone, action-cam with GoPro style mount or a full-size camera up to 2.65 pounds. The fittings for larger cameras include a lens rest. This was my only real regret as I realized that one of my cameras that I wanted to use is a bit overweight, I forgot to include the weight of my lens. So I probably should have bought the larger Scorp 2 gimbal that can handle 5.5 pounds. You might want to weigh your heaviest camera before choosing which size Scorp gimbal to buy. Installing a camera and balancing it only takes a few minutes thanks to the excellent tutorial videos Feiyu has put on YouTube. You'll want to check these out as the printed documentation of the gimbal is ok, but a little weak in many areas. The only issue I ran into is if you are using a very light action cam with a 1/4-20 tripod thread. These mount closer to the base plate than cameras with a GoPro mount that makes them sit higher up. At first it will seem you can't move the camera far enough to balance it, but if you disengage the safety locks on the mounting plates you get an extra bit of travel that will allow you properly balance even a very light weight action cam. The gimbal includes an an app for controlling the gimbal and another one to use when your phone is mounted on the gimbal for shooting. I haven't tried the latter one out yet but it claims to give you better control of the phone's shooting features using the knob and other control buttons on the gimbal. A lot of other different types of action cams and cameras can be controlled from the gimbal over bluetooth or through a USB cable. Thankfully they include a handful of different USB adapters for just about any kind of camera. The gimbal has a built in battery with a claimed life of up to 10 hours, while I haven't run it dry yet to test it, the battery appears like it will last a long time. Just remember that you can't just swap in a new battery, so if you are expecting a long day of shooting you may want to bring along a power bank so you can recharge the gimbal between shots. And oh yes, the AI tracking feature. The gimbal has it's own camera and AI that will track you as you move around. So for example you can put the gimbal on a table and have it track you as you move around the room or in front of a white board. Very handy feature! The Gimbal has a 1/4-20 tripod thread on the bottom, so you can attach it to a tripod/dolly or even a jib, then use the AI tracking feature or the app to follow your subject as you move the dolly or jib to get more dramatic camera angles. The gimbal does a great job of removing jitter and unwanted motion from handheld video particularly for low light situations. Cameras with electronic stabilization work by moving the image around to reduce shake so they may look steady but in low light you will still see a lot of motion blur. With a gimbal the camera actually moves less so you get much higher quality shots in low light. The gimbal supports different shooting modes that allow you to hold it in different ways for normal and "close to the ground" shots. It also has a button that flips the camera around, so you can go from shooting forward to shooting your own face smoothly. The touch screen of the gimbal is large, high contrast and easy to read in all but direct sunlight where I needed to shade the screen a bit to read it. Control of the camera from the joystick and wheel is nice and smooth. Supposedly on my RX0II camera I can control the digital zoom from the wheel, but so far I haven't been able to get that working yet. I can only see two downsides right now, and they are fairly minor. One is that there is no software SDK for writing your own phone/PC apps to control the gimbal. Most people won't want to do this but I was hoping to write a custom app, so I miss having an SDK. The other issue will only get you if you want to use the gimbal for live video shooting. Right now there is no good way to rig up a video cable from your camera without it interfering with the operation of the gimbal. It would be nice if the gimbal had a way to pass video from the camera, through to an output on the gimbal handle. Again, not a big issue for most people, but it's on my wishlist. Overall I'd highly recommend the Scorp Mini-2 as long as your camera is 2.65 pounds or less, it's a great gimbal for the price. If your camera weighs more, just get the full size Scorp-2 which handles 5.5 pounds and actually doesn't cost that much more. ... show more

  • Light, compact gimbal, integrated AI tracking, handles 2.7 lbs of phone, GoPro, light mirrorless cam
Size: SCORP Mini-2 Color: Black
FeiyuTech SCORP Mini-2 is a gimbal with integrated AI tracking. It can carry a max payload of 2.7 pounds so it can handle lighter weight devices such as smartphones, action cameras (GoPro), compact cameras (ZV-E10), and some light mirrorless cameras (A6700). The gimbal itself is compact and very light at 1.9 lbs. The gimbal kit comes with every type of plate to attach your device to the gimbal, including: 1. fixed plate (for cameras) 2. slider (for cameras) 3. quick release plate + screw (optional for cameras) 4. lens holder + screw (optional for longer camera lens) 5. GoPro adapter + screw 6. smartphone holder On the gimbal handle and body there are many handy operation buttons such as power, trigger, mode, joystick, and shutter. For buttons like shutter to operate, you must connect the gimbal to your camera device via a cable or BT. The Mini-2 comes with a plethora of cables (eight) and hopefully one of them is a match and connects you. If not, use BT. Connecting to the gimbal with their smartphone app unlocks many features that you don't want to miss. You get settings, the gimbal remote control operation, parameter adjustments, and some built-in filming modes. I have an older Feiyu-Tech gimbal that has served me well and thought I would see how their new AI gimbals work. This mini-2 has a fantastic and easy to use AI intelligent tracking. You only need to learn two of the hand gestures to get started: turn AI tracking on/off (use one hand to make the "okay" gesture of first finger and thumb forming an "O" with three other fingers pointed up) and trigger the shutter (show palm with stiff fingers in the "stop" gesture). Put this gimbal on a tripod and you have the friendly AI as your cameraman. I'm only shooting using an older iPhone with a Moment case and lens but this gimbal makes the video look so professional with very stable shots at any angle, especially B-roll "footstep" shots that are enabled due to the extra handle for low shots. I highly recommend this gimbal for upgrading your mobile photography game. ... show more
