  • A gem for painters
I’ve never included a photo in my reviews but I did here because the author’s approach is so different. He lists colors used and composition issues with the corresponding issue noted by number on the image. It’s the next best thing to having a teacher along side you. It’s not the color palette I use but one can still get a feel for color mixing. One of the most important lessons my students are learning is learning to create combinations of colors they would never have thought to use. The author also includes small tips that make painting easier as well as writing about a painter’s thinking who is helpful too. It’s one of the best books for a painter’s reference library. ... show more

  • Waking up creativity
This has truly been a book worth owning. Mr Durkee has done an incredible job of taking the artist through a journey of self expression, teaching you how to dig deep inside and allowing your creativity to take form. Of course, the many beautiful works that George has shared are inspirational, to say the least, but digging into the meat, without mincing words or adding a load of filler is what makes this book more valuable than most anything I have read regarding art instruction. My vision has been forever changed and I will read this one again and again. ... show more

  • Excellent
I have seen several of his videos, they are excellent and motivated me to buy this book. This book is very straightforward, thorough and succinct. I picked up his technique using the videos but found the book added new material and reinforced my prior learning. It helped me focus on an approach to painting that I now follow on a regular basis. Not surprisingly, I also love his paintings. I read the kindle version which worked very well in that format. A good deal overall. I would buy it again and recommend to a friend. ... show more

  • A great resource
I am thrilled to find a book on landscape painting by George Allen Durkee. I have admired his work for years but have never been able to figure out how he creates such stunning landscapes. Reading his book is like having a conversation with the artist. Not only does he explain the basics but he talks to you about how he sees the subject and what elements create a good painting. Owning his book is every bit as valuable to me as being able to take a private lesson with George. ... show more

  • One of the best art books I have seen for advanced beginners
George gets it said in a succinct, easy to read and remember way. Just the right amount of knowledge gain and encouragement to just do it. Not all good artists are good teachers ( in fact....well never mind), but George is very good at both. Rare combo. I can't wait to take a workshop from him.
