Description

With investigations into everything from black holes to exoplanets, the Hubble Telescope has changed not only the face of astronomy but also our very sense of being in the universe. On the 30th anniversary of its launch into low-earth orbit, this updated edition of Expanding Universe presents 30 brand new images, unveiling more hidden gems from the Hubble’s archives.Ultra-high resolution and taken with almost no background light, these pictures have answered some of the most compelling questions of time and space while also revealing new mysteries, like the strange “dark energy” that sees the universe expanding at an ever-accelerating rate. The collection is accompanied by an essay from photography critic Owen Edwards and an interview with Zoltan Levay, who explains how the pictures are composed. Veteran Hubble astronauts Charles F. Bolden, Jr. and John Mace Grunsfeld also offer their insights on Hubble’s legacy and future space exploration. Read more

  • Beautiful book
I meant to buy a JTWS book and went down a click hole and found this book and didn’t look at it closely before buying. The pictures are Hubble quality and still amazing. Great coffee table book full of pictures. It was a little confusing with several languages included and not sure what was what but I get it. They didn’t have to do several printings. ... show more

  • Stunning book
I bought this for my niece and nephew (6 and 10) and they love it. They were stunned to see all the pictures and realize that they are real. It's pretty incredible, highly recommend this book for anyone

  • A Tour of Our Beautiful Universe
Incredibly beautiful book. It's coffee table sized and I keep it lying out all the time.

  • Beautiful photos
Sure, you can see these photos online, but sometimes it’s nice to have them within easy reach on a coffee table. Makes a nice gift - to help people better understand just how small and insignificant we are.?

  • Beautiful book.
I wanted a coffee table book that looked beautiful but wasn't the same old book that nobody even opens. This is beautiful. Though I partially bought it for decor, I loved reading it and know others will too. Gorgeous pictures and interesting information.

  • Perhaps the highest quality book I own
This really should be a $100 book - no question. The cover is thicker than is common, so the creasing of the dust cover squares around it. The paper that holds the text has a thick linen feel. The images are varnished, and the surrounding black is covered with a different varnish that resists fingerprints. An example of the little touches that make this so special is that if one removes the dust cover and examines the cover itself, not only is the title debossed, but so are the stars. The small things like this show the exquisite quality of this book. Of course, it would be all for naught if the fidelity of the printed images was not of the highest quality, which fortunately is the case. The printing and the paper wonderfully show the information captured by the Hubble Space Telescope, with some images folding out to multiple pages for those special panoramic views. Anyone with the slightest interest in space and the expanding universe will enjoy this book for a very long time. ... show more

  • Exactly what I wanted, beautiful picture book
I got this as a gift for someone else and now I’m gonna have to buy it again… because I’m not giving this away, it’s too beautiful!!! It has some intro and good information, but it dives quickly into exactly what I wanted: gorgeous, high-definition pictures of the universe. At first I was worried that I accidentally bought it in German, but it just has three languages (I just realized German isn’t one of the languages lol it’s English, Deutsch, and Francais). Absolutely gorgeous. Definitely worth the money. ... show more

  • Photos and print quality are amazing, the quality you'd expect from the publisher.
A great presentation of some very high-resolution photos. There are several foldouts that span 3-4 pages and are incredible to look at. The only disappointment is that the photos are largely presented without any accompanying text so you're not really certain what you're looking at from page to page. ... show more
