Description

From the fastest marathoner in the world over fifty—and maybe the planet’s most determined underdog—an inspiring tale of resilience, redemption, and personal transformation. Born into a broken family in Somerville, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston, Ken Rideout grew up in a household persistently scarred by drugs and crime. At just eighteen, he found himself working as a corrections officer in a prison where his stepfather had been incarcerated, and his brother would later serve time. Despite the bleak expectations set by his family, Ken harbored dreams far beyond the confines of his upbringing. Ken eventually broke free from the gritty streets of Somerville to the high-stakes world of Wall Street, where he carved out a successful career with top firms like Cantor Fitzgerald and Crédit Agricole. Yet, beneath the veneer of success, he battled a decade-long addiction to opioids, spending his hard-earned wealth on pills. The turning point came with the adoption of a daughter from overseas—a wake-up call to become the father and man he always dreamed of being. Running became Ken’s salvation. With unwavering determination, he willed himself to run vast distances. In three years, Ken transformed from a “running nobody” to the world’s fastest marathoner over fifty. His mantra: Win—or die trying. In the book, Ken shares his awe-inspiring achievements, including, at age fifty-two, winning the Masters (50+) Marathon World Championships in Chicago and conquering the Gobi March ultra-marathon, one of the world’s toughest races. Through sheer resilience and grit, Ken rewrote his story. Read more

  • Great, gritty read
Format: Hardcover
I read The Other Side of Hard by Ken Rideout with a mix of pride, surprise, and—if I’m being honest—a little irritation. Ken and I go way back, and when you grow up with someone you don’t expect to suddenly find yourself on the page, especially not in the role of the “bad influence” or the kid making questionable decisions. So yeah, seeing a version of myself framed that way stung a bit. Thanks Kenny- you’ll get yours! That said, stepping back from my hurt feelings , I can’t deny that the book is powerful. Ken tells his story with real intensity and honesty, and the way he describes pushing through hardship and building discipline is genuinely motivating. Even if I don’t agree with every memory or characterization, I respect that he owned his perspective and told it the way he experienced it. The strength of the book is how raw it feels. It’s not polished into something fake or inspirational in a cheesy way—it’s more like someone sitting across the table telling you exactly how things looked from their side of the street. And honestly, even the parts that made me roll my eyes are part of what makes the story feel real. So while I might still give Ken a hard time the next time I see him about how he wrote about a few of us from back in the day, I’ll also admit this: he wrote a compelling book. If the goal was to show how hard experiences shape a person—and how much grit it takes to change your trajectory—he absolutely pulled it off. Anonymous (not Ray) ... show more

  • The Other Side of Hard Hits Home - Rideout!!!!
Format: Hardcover
This book hit me harder than I expected. It stirred up a lot of emotions—both good and bad—something I definitely didn’t see coming when I first picked it up. At first glance, it might seem like a book strictly about running, but it’s really about something much deeper. Running is simply the vehicle for a story about struggle, discipline, and change. The Other Side of Hard is about facing yourself—the excuses, the pain, the past, and the habits that hold you back—and deciding to push forward anyway. Most of all, it’s about silencing that voice in the back of your mind that tells you that you can’t, that you don’t deserve it. Whether you’re chasing a physical goal, building something meaningful, or simply trying to become a better or new version of yourself, the message is the same: the real battle is internal. There’s nothing romanticized here. The struggles, the chaos, the bad decisions—it’s all laid out without excuses. That’s what makes the message so powerful. It’s not about pretending the past didn’t happen. It’s about proving it doesn’t have to define you. What sticks with me most is the sense that change is possible if you’re willing to confront the hardest parts of yourself and do the work. That alone makes this book worth reading. This isn’t just a running book. It’s a book about discipline, accountability, resilience, and the possibility of becoming better than you were yesterday. If you’re trying to push past your own limits—real or imagined—this book will resonate with you. Favorite quote: “Be the dandelion guy.” — Shelby Rideout Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Captivating
Format: Hardcover
I recently read Ken’s book and honestly went into it not knowing what to expect. At first, I wasn’t sure it would be the kind of book I usually enjoy, but it ended up surprising me in a really good way. Once I started reading, it pulled me in pretty quickly and kept my attention the whole time. One thing I really liked about the book is how personal it feels. Ken doesn’t just briefly talk about events in his life. He takes the time to really walk you through them. The way he describes what he went through makes everything feel vivid and real, almost like you are experiencing those moments right alongside him. You also get a deeper look at his thoughts, emotions, and challenges, not just the big moments. That made the story feel more genuine and relatable. It never felt overly polished or distant. Instead, it felt like someone honestly sharing their life story and letting readers see both the good and the difficult parts. By the end, I realized I enjoyed the book a lot more than I expected to. It gives readers a real sense of who Ken is and what he has been through. If you like books that feel personal and give you a deeper look into someone’s life, this one is definitely worth reading. ... show more

  • Highly recommend!! Great read
Format: Hardcover
Just finished Everything You Want Is on the Other Side of Hard by Ken Rideout. This book hit different. It’s not about talent or perfect conditions — it’s about embracing discomfort, pushing past limits, and building the mental toughness that most people avoid. As someone who spends a lot of time chasing miles, this message resonates. The hard runs, the early mornings, the moments you want to quit… that’s where the growth actually lives. If you’re someone chasing big goals — in running, life, or business — this book is a reminder that the path forward usually starts where things get uncomfortable. ... show more
