  • Worth It.
Style: Standard Fit
Wore them to a rock concert where I was sitting fairly close to the stage and was amazed at how much it filtered out BG noise while still giving me clarity to enjoy the music. I felt very protected and had a great time. I think the inside of one of my ears is weird so it kinda hurt having it in but it was tolerable. ... show more

  • Excellent hearing protection while still hearing sound you want
Style: Standard Fit
I use these for concerts and put them in before it starts, and leave them in until it’s over and these are great. They prevent tinnitus or any kind of hearing issue after the concert is over, you were fully protected. You can still hear the concert perfectly and even better they drown out your concert neighbor’s screams and singing. When the people around you talk during the show it’s hard to hear them but you can make out what they say if you want to. And the concert has quite good sound. I wore them to a rock concert that was shaking the brick building and sidewalk outside during sound check and after the concert was over my ears were perfect. I enjoyed the show with no discomfort and happy with the sound and even talked to the band during (and heard their reply to me, the guitarist came out into the crowd). Very nice! Only thing is, they do hurt while they are in. It goes away as soon as you take them out, I am playing with adjusting them better but I think it’s just the design and hardness of the base plastic. It’s not a huge deal, they do feel like they go in kind of deep. I will always keep these on hand for concerts and replace them often. Love them. Absolutely better than foam ones for concerts but my daughter finds them uncomfortable enough that she prefers foam, she has had a ruptured ear drum and is always sensitive about her ears. She claims her cheap foam ones give the same result for her, but I use both and think these are way better if you can tolerate the feel of them. I personally love these. ... show more

  • Fantastic Noise Reduction and Comfortable
Style: Standard Fit
I recently purchased the Etymotic Research ER20XS High-Fidelity Earplugs, and I'm amazed by their performance. These earplugs excel at blocking out dangerous highs and lows, making them perfect for concerts, airplanes, motorcycles, and other loud environments where hearing damage is a concern. They are also great for individuals with sensitivity or those who need universal hearing protection. One of the standout features of these earplugs is their ability to filter out high-pitched and low-pitched noises while still allowing for clear conversations. They are discreet and almost invisible when worn, and the fact that they are reusable makes them a cost-effective choice at around $20. While the comfort level is slightly uncomfortable, it's bearable and doesn't significantly impact the overall experience. The sizes provided fit well for me, and I found them more comfortable than Apple AirPods. Comfort is only a minor aspect compared to the exceptional performance these earplugs deliver. The noise reduction capability of the ER20XS earplugs is nothing short of magical. They excel in noisy environments, and using them has made me feel less drained and more refreshed, especially as an introvert. I would rate the noise reduction at 4.5 out of 5 since they effectively block out full noises while still allowing clear perception of middle-range sounds, which is their intended purpose. In terms of build quality, these earplugs are compact and come in a cool rubber case. However, opening the case requires some care as it can easily come undone. The overall build quality is decent, though I wish there was a more effective way to clean the earpieces, as they can become unhygienic after extended use. Personally, I've used these earplugs in various settings like social events, parties, concerts, airplanes, and even while riding a motorcycle, and I've never been disappointed. They consistently provide a fantastic experience and continue to protect my hearing. Overall, the Etymotic Research ER20XS High-Fidelity Earplugs are a great investment for anyone seeking effective noise reduction without compromising clarity of conversation. They may be slightly uncomfortable, but their exceptional noise reduction capabilities, discreet design, and reasonable price make them a top choice in the market. ... show more

  • No more ringing ears. THESE ARE A MUST!!!
Style: Standard Fit
I use these several times a week, mowing the lawn, trimming, on flights, at concerts, with the angle grinder, SDS hammer drill, you name it. Pretty much any time I know it's going to be loud, these go in first. That versatility alone makes them worth having around the house. Fit is comfortable and they stay in place no matter what I'm doing, no constant readjusting or worrying about them falling out. The sound reduction is noticeable too, things still sound natural, just quieter, which is exactly what you want from a high fidelity earplug instead of that muffled, underwater feeling cheaper ones give you. You can still hold a normal conversation with them in, which is a nice bonus when you're at a concert or around people and don't want to feel completely cut off. The real win for me is no more ringing in my ears at night after yard work, something that used to happen constantly before I started using these. They're easy to clean, reusable, and the small size means they're barely noticeable once they're in. The carrying case is compact too, easy to keep on me without being a hassle, and great value when you consider how often I reach for these. Genuinely a must have if you're regularly around loud equipment, flights, or concerts. Highly recommend. ... show more

  • Can’t get to fit right
Style: Standard Fit
These do work well and reduce the overall volume with pretty good clarity, as they’re supposed to. However, I have difficulty getting them to “seal” correctly in my ears and agree with others that they can be uncomfortable compared to other earplugs. If I push them in too far, they don’t block anything for some reason. If I pull them out too far, they don’t work either. There’s a sweet spot like halfway in where I can get them to seal, but then they feel like they could fall out. With other earplugs, I can usually control the blockage with depth. A little bit in equals a little bit of blockage. All the way in equals full blockage. So it’s kind of odd. I’m a size medium in everything and got the “standard fit.” It could be a sizing issue, but I don’t think I would be able to get a larger size in my ear. I think it’s more a flaw in the structure of the rubber seals, as they are very thin and flimsy. Overall, I’m not very satisfied. They work for now, but I will need to find something better. It may just be a case of them working well with certain people’s anatomy and not so well with others. ... show more

  • Excellent for musician tinnitus
Style: Standard Fit
I am a professional violinist. I began having tinnitus many years ago: hearing the TV static “sound of silence,” plus occasional 10-second bouts of extreme ringing typically in the left ear. I put one of these earplugs in my left ear, which is just above the instrument as I hold it under my jaw. Hearing damage/loss in the left ear is a universal symptom of long-term violin playing, and additionally, the loud direct sound from being close to the instrument sometimes causes students (me many years ago) to limit themselves and avoid drawing the most sound from the instrument. This earplug solves both those issues: I still hear clearly at all volumes but am not overwhelmed when I play out, and my bouts of ringing have disappeared, and only come back when I forget to put the earplug in. I use this earplug whenever I play, indoors, outdoors, practicing or performing. I could go on about how useful this has been for me. After a couple minutes of being worn it fills the ear extremely comfortably, and I often (at least twice a week) forget to take it out after practicing, because I simply don’t realize it was in until someone notices the thing in my ear. This size is perfect for my ear, snug but not tight. I personally don’t use the case, I just slip it under the strap for my violin in its case. I believe these can last indefinitely until lost, which is a fine value for $10 each when I only use one at a time. I would recommend this to anyone who needs slight sound reduction of upper levels. ... show more

  • Skeptical of their claims
Style: Standard Fit
I don't have a way to measure their effectiveness objectively, but I have a hard time believing that the result of these plugs is a 20db reduction. The volume (at a Larkin Poe concert, not the loudest band around) was still loud enough to cause sonic distortion in my hearing. Believe it or not, my go-to from now on is my noise reduction music earbuds, in my case Pixel Buds Pro 2, they actually reduce the noise to a comfortable level, eliminate the distortion and provide every bit as much clarity as anything else I've tried. I first tried them when I had forgotten to bring plugs to a concert and was surprised by how well they worked. I went ahead and ordered the Etymotics thinking that surely they would be the preferred methods since they're expressly designed for this purpose, but actually no. Since Etymotic makes audio gear, maybe they should try their hand at earbuds that use noise reduction technology and microphones to reproduce the live sound with even more superior accuracy. Just a thought. ... show more

  • Takes The Edge Off
Style: Standard Fit
As a long-time motorcyclist, I eventually came around to the idea that I would have to do something to protect my hearing against the constant wind noise rushing around my helmet. For years, I used the bright orange foam earplugs you find at a shooting range, but these are (a) uncomfortable, and (b) they don't just reduce sound, they seem to muffle and distort it, like placing a hand over your mouth as you speak. I'd heard about musician's earplugs for some time, and always figured I'd get around to trying them eventually, then when I read a review at my favorite motorcycle website extolling the virtues of Etymotics, I decided the time was now. There's no going back. The Etymotic earplugs really are a breed apart from the foam cheapies. I like to say that they "turn down the volume" without changing the quality of the sound. You can still hear everything—highs and lows and midrange still get through, just with less intensity. Etymotics fast became a staple of my motorcycle commute, but soon enough I started carrying them with me to movie screenings, live music events, anywhere I would encounter sustained loud noise. Sure, they feel a bit odd the first time you put them in. But the upside was definitely worth the short period of adjustment. I can easily sit through a movie or a concert without itching to remove them. When the time comes to take them out, the little tabs are just the right length to make it easy to grab hold of them. They don't stay clean for long, but since I don't share my pair with anyone else, it's not an issue. Give them a once-over with a Q-tip, and they're presentable again in no time. I just got a couple more sets to give as Christmas presents to friends who enjoy live music. Give musician's earplugs a try, and I have a feeling you'll become a convert, the way I have. ... show more
