Heavy duty 4 pound maul. Solid one piece forged steel, single bit, pack sized maul. Made easy work of splitting logs and making kindling. I would recommend this product . The maul arrived sharp and has a high quality sheath to protect the blade. The back of the maul has a flat hammer, useful for driving a wedge in large logs, before breaking down further. There grip has a shock absorbing handle which helps tremendously.

Looks to be well made but it's not light that's why I did not review that part of it and I haven't had it long enough to check it's durability has a razor sharp edge too so be careful, comes with a decent covering for the Axe end of it. Is all synthetic material too no wood to fall apart. I'd recommend this tool. it's nicely finished as well.

I bought for splitting wood for a wood stove. I have never split wood before and picked this for its quality. I can confidently and effector split wood with this! The weight is great and the handle length is comfortable and safe. The blue color does wear off, but it wears evenly and doesn’t chip.

I am a woodbilly and a tool guy. I love cutting trees, splitting wood with an 8 pound maul, and I love a good 4 pound hammer in the shop. This tool combines a high quality 4 pound hammer on one side with the ability to split wood like a hatchet (a mini maul really) on the other side. I love that the hammer side can be used with the sheath on (safety first). I've used this tool to bend my mower deck back into shape, beat on stubborn bolts, tap a bolt extractor in, to cut thick vines on my trees, and to split kindling. When splitting firewood into kindling it's like having a mini maul. One of my favorite tools. My only regret is not buying the special addition version (but I think I will remedy that soon).

I purchased the standard blue Fireside Friend model and glad I did for the additional grip and comfort of the shock-reduction hanlde over the leather ring alternative. The 4 lb. weight is perfect for camping and can be used with one or two hands. While it would be nice if the handle was about two inches longer, this tool works fine as is and fits nicely in my camping tool bag with my Husqvarna hatchet. My only nit and why I deducted one star was the poor edge on this tool as sold. The quality of the materials and fit was very good, but the sharpness of the bit was disappointing, event for a splitting maul. I noticed this when I was getting bounce-back or rebound when splitting greener wood. On closer examination I discovered that not only the cutting edge was dull, but it was poorly ground with one side not matching the angle of the other. After about an hour of finishing with a file and sharpening stone, I finally achieved the sharpness I expected and it performed much better. If you have dry, seasoned wood, I would expect about 4-6 inches to be about the maximum diameter for this tool to split safely. I split about a dozen 4 inch logs cut from trees downed this spring by storms which was still somewhat green, so this was a fairly critical test. After dressing the blade bit, however, it did an excellent job of splitting this wood. While I usually use a large log as a base for splitting with a standard long-handled maul, I found it safer to split logs and their sections directly on the ground with the Fireside Friend Axe. This avoids any bounce-back of this shorter-handled maul into one of your legs while standing, which nearly happened to me. I found this tool safest and most effective to use kneeling in front of the piece you’re splitting, leaving little to no chance that rebound of the shorter maul could present a danger. In closing, I’m excited to find this compact, yet effective splitting maul for my camping excursions. Yes, I was disappointed that the cutting edge was not properly finished, but having resolved that myself, I look forward to using this Estwing Fireside Friend for years to come.

Love this axe! I've used the Estwing for splitting small logs, used the hammer side with a splitting wedge to split larger logs and debarked oak fireword. Built really well and easy to handle. Highly recommend this product
