  • High Quality Soft-side Cooler
Color: Green & Grey
I spent easily a month going through reviews for various soft sided coolers and small rotomolded coolers as well as looking at them in person. I was looking for something easily portable to keep in a vehicle, carry on the boat, to the beach, or to cookouts etc. Although I know it's tough to compare the durability of a softside to a rotomold but the portability is no comparison. After ordering and returning 2 separate RTIC softside coolers due to quality issues, looking at yeti hoppers and roadies, watching several performance tests of dozens of coolers, I finally decided on the Engel HD30. When it arrived, I could immediately tell the quality surpassed the RTIC softside coolers and was on par with the Yeti Hopper. I find the design better than the Yeti with a larger opening due to the more rectangular shape over the conical shape of the hopper. It's easily carried with the shoulder strap, top straps, or side straps. The zipper seems heavy duty and leakproof although not as large and rugged looking as the one on the yeti. Overall the cooler seems very well thought out with high quality and finish in every seam. At over $100 cheaper than the same size Hopper, with equal craftsmanship from a reputable company like Engel, it's a no-brainer. I can't speak to performance yet but will update after use. According to one independent test, it is the highest performing soft cooler to date but we will see. ... show more

  • A travel ball must!!!!
Color: Green & Grey
Packed it with 12 bottles of water and 12 gatorades and filled it up about 3/4 full of ice at 0500am for a full Saturday of baseball. It sat in 95° heat on concrete until 1030pm. After 5 games all the water and gatorade were gone but there was still a ton ice in it. It's Monday now and it occurred to me l forgot to dump the ice out when we got home. I was shocked to open the bag and find only about half the ice had melted. I took it outside to empty it on the yard. With it still zipped shut l turned it upside down to see if it leaked with all that water in it. No leaks! Oh, and the shoulder strap is great too. The zipper is soft, opens wide, and is easy to open and close. The color options were good for us. It would be nice to order one in some custom colors but thats just me being picky... I love the bag and the fact that it's a hundred buck cheaper than anything close to it. If your looking for a cooler bag and you've read all the reviews and watched all the videos like l did just pull the trigger and get this one. ... show more

  • Poor stitching, vacuum valve technology is a gimmick, poor customer service (Engel not Amazon)
Color: Orange & Gray
I purchased this cooler back in June 2018 to improve upon an existing inexpensive igloo cooler that we had been using for years (camping). I was attempting to find a better performing cooler, but not pay the high price point of a Yeti. The Engel HD30 seemed like a nice "in-between" solution. In hindsight, I'd recommend going with a Yeti (friends of ours have two Yetis where Engels defects do not apply). I have two main issues, which drove a desire to return. First, after only 3-4 uses the stitching has become de-laminated (see pic). What will the stitching look like after a year, right? Second, the vacuum valve technology is gimmickie at best. Process being, load the cooler, zip it up, attach the vacuum and suck the air out. This all works well, but at your next "cooler opening" of the zipper air will quickly seep back into the "space" between the bright-color inside liner and the rigid insulation. Where as, upon zipping back up you've lost any value of having a vacuum seal. I attempted to return directly to Engel (I had registered the product correctly with them). They accepted the merits of the return and issued an RMA number, BUT... stated that I was responsible for shipping the cooler back to them. This was all acceptable until I went to the post office, which is when I found out that shipping cost (upstate New York) was $48. I gave this feedback back to Engel and said that the shipping cost was unacceptable (I asked them to provide a means to ship back to them). They did nothing for me and simply replied back with their warrenty statement. ... show more

  • Side grab handles & other carry options were important to my wife for loading/unloading when it's weighted down. Happy wife.
Color: Green & Grey
Got it last week. Initial impression are positive. It's the exact right size for my wife to haul around to our youngest daughter's softball tournaments in the rolling cart & fits in her back seat or trunk for weekend trips to our oldest daughter's basketball tournaments. We often have to split up & she can't lug our big Igloo around so we've ditched it. Buying a tall Engel 50 roto-molded cooler that has high volume and a narrow footprint so we can carry a weekend worth of ice in the hard sided & lug the Engel HD30 in & out of the car to the fields (long walks) or into the hotel room. Pluses: Interiour insulation has great thickness. NEON INTERIOR makes it easier to locate items (big plus). Comfortable side grab handles (wife probably won't use the shoulder strap as it would pull her down). Zip pocket on front for phone, etc. Solid, flat bottom won't tip over like most hard sided coolers in this volume. Anchor holes under the duffel style handle are big enough to get thick tie down straps (not those little thin ones) through. Zipper pull seems solid w/ a rubber padded pull loop is a plus for those with low grip strength. Zipper is smooth. Negatives: Shoulder strap pad is sewn into the center of the strap, so you have to adjust two sliding buckles to change length (overkill & time consuming way to do it). Not as simple as a normal duffel strap w/ a single slide buckle adjuster and a padded strap that wraps around the strap. Side loops (what holds the bottle opener on) I thought would be good Molle Pouch anchors, but just saw pics from another user where the stitching unravels without weight? They seem pretty sturdily stitched on upon initial inspection (maybe other reviewer got a bad one). One of the main reasons I bought it was to toss molle pouches on the outside or caribeners to toss items like keys, phones, sunscreen, gum & chapstick in for our kids to have easy access all the time. Will update this once I strap a few things on. Cooler is going to work well for our purposes, but would love to see those side loops re-stitched to match the rest of what seems a pretty durable & well thought out cooler. Looking forward to a summer of cold food & drink but no shin bruises from lugging our monster cooler around. ... show more
