Downloaded this book on the advice of a classmate who said it was great. After reading the introductory section I was hoping to get to some good content, but it never came. I was really hoping to learn some interesting stuff on the latest emotional intelligence research, but honestly I felt like the whole book could have been boiled down into a 20 slide PowerPoint. I learned basically nothing from this book. For example, one of the sections said to go people watching at a coffee shop and watch how people interact. Another section advised me to listen to what others say before I start to speak...... no duh. I can only imagine that this book would be helpful to some sort of high-functioning self-aware robot that is trying to blend in better with society. Because “don’t ask for a raise when the company is doing poorly” is not news to me or most of the people I know. Save your money. Unless you are SERIOUSLY socially inept, this book isn’t going to do you any good. ... show more

  • A shallow list of silly tips, WASTE OF TIME
This book was VERY disappointing! It’s basically an internet listicle of really shallow tips. Like “listen” and “write down how you’re feeling”. I would hardly call this a self help book - it’s not any better than a free online article. Books like difficult conversations or even the oldie learned optimism are much better. ... show more

  • How to be a vulcan
This could have the title " how to be a vulcan". Basically suggests how to recognize your own emotional triggers so you can be more logical.

  • This book saved my life.
Like, saved my life. Has anyone ever felt like they were highly intelligent and capable, yet there was something inarticulable holding you back? I felt like that for a long time. With the help of some friends and acquaintances telling me I was low in EMOTIONAL intelligence, I began looking into self help for growing my mysterious EQ. I have had this book for a little less than a week, but the very simple, very well-explained practices it gave me, along with the online tests and practices (oh yeah, they have thought of everything) have exponentially made it worth the paltry purchase price. People are telling me I “seem lighter” and that I am understanding them better. I am now able to reflect both within myself and on my personal relationships in a way that helps me grow. Each step is becoming more exciting. I feel like I am becoming a new person, but these abilities have always been inside of me. This book, and the online practices, help me realize what, exactly, I should be focusing on. Heads up - it does require effort to get better. You have to first be willing and able to accurately self-assess your aptitude, so if you have a trusted friend help you take the initial test, it might help accuracy. You also have to be willing to be receptive and forgiving to yourself in order to enact behavioral changes. If you can do these things, I would recommend this book 100% Good luck. ... show more

  • We need to read more books like this in high school.
I really wish I had read this book in high school and better yet had a course in it. It would have saved me a lot of grief. As a society, we need to teach children how to deal with emotions. I wish I had not taken it out of the library because the code in the back only works for one person. So, I was not able to take the EQ (Emotional Intelligence)test. I may need to buy the book. I loved it all, but I have picked out my favorite parts of each section: Self Awareness Strategies: 1. Ask others for feedback about how you handle your emotions and listen carefully to what they say. 2. Weekly or bi-weekly take stock of your life and write down situations that you didn't deal with well and then list which quality that you wanted to honor but didn't. For example: Honesty is the quality and then write down a situation that I didn't handle well where I wasn't completely honest. The next time a situation like this comes up, I might deal with it differently because I will remember the list. Self Management Strategies: 1. To prepare for change, make a list of things in my life that could possibly change and write down ideas for how I could deal with that. I really enjoyed doing this and it really has been helpful. Social Awareness Strategies: 1. Become a great observer. Learn how to sense the mood of a room and check to see if your observations are correct. 1. Listen. Listen. Listen. Don't interrupt. Relationship Management Strategies: 1. Use these phrases more: "I am sorry." "Please" "Thank You" Fabulous book. I highly recommend it. ... show more

  • There’s a hidden cost of this book
I dislike the ability to take the survey only twice. At the beginning and after months/years of work. As this is a journey I think its important to measure as you go. It may take someone 6 months to work on one thing but they cant measure their improvement with the test until they feel they’ve made a significant improvements in their mind. They tell you you can test once more at any time but your freebees are done at two so you’ll have to purchase more. I also don’t like how it pitches to use the surveys for other people to evalute you but those surveys cost you $250 dollars! Seems like a book with good intent but too much emphasis on money making for Talentsmart for me to really take it seriously. Comon’ if I buy your book to read but I really have to spend another $350 to really get everything out of it then I’m gonna look elsewhere. I can’t be the only one who feels this way. ... show more
