I got rid of my cheap memory foam full-size mattress and bed frame in January 2022 and started sleeping on the floor for various reasons, including a tendency toward minimalism and because people around the world sleep on hard surfaces without problems and it generally seems to be good for one's back. At the time, my room had thick carpet, so all I needed were a yoga mat and a couple of blankets. But when I moved into a new house with hard wood floors, I realized I needed more cushioning. I reluctantly bought this futon. It was more money than I ever intended to spend on my bedding and I was afraid I would regret it. I purchased it in late September and it was delivered six days later (without Prime). It seems to be authentically from Japan and the packaging contains helpful tips for futon care. I don't have a tatami or any sort of base for it. I put a yoga mat down first, then the futon, then a comforter, then a thick fleece blanket, then a bottom bed sheet. Many wouldn't find this arrangement comfortable, but I think it's great. I've been sleeping well. I highly recommend this futon for anyone looking to sleep on a hard wood floor. ... show more

Having traveled to Japan, I knew first hand the enjoyment of sleeping on a Futon. Bought a new Beautyrest 'firm' mattress, but it just wasn't firm. (Seems like every mattress these days has started adding the temperpedic foam on top, it's simply terrible.) So a lightbulb went off in my head, when I realized I could add a Futon as a Mattress Topper. I researched a lot and finally decided on Emoor from Japan. Excellent Japanese quality and absolutely NO chemical SMELL! (I'm sensitive to smells so this would have been a deal breaker). I laid it out on a sheet for a week, in an extra room, to give it time to unflatten and flipped it regularly to help it along. Very HAPPY with the results, bed is firmer. I bought this futon specifically because I enjoyed sleeping on them in Japan. It is very well made and packed excellently for shipping. I've been using it on the new Japanese style platform bed I built for a few weeks now. I am delighted with the futon. I also bought a fitted cover for it, and recently ordered a second cover. This a genuine made in Japan futon, or shikibuton. No this isn’t the softest thickest futon you can buy, but it is actually hard to find made in Japan futons for this price in the United States. For the price I think it is terrific. Obviously it’s not going to be as thick as a mattress. If you want mattress thickness then buy a mattress. Also keep in mind that Japanese futons are designed to be used on a soft surface like tatami (carpet works too), so you will likely find this too hard for use on a hardwood floor. ... show more

I coupled this with a modern Western style futon from EMOOR (Japanese Padded Futon Mattress Machi King Gray). I love to traditional smell and feel of this top futon! Had it for a few weeks now I would recommend it.

When we firstly open the package, the mattress carries a lot of moisture. After three months, it is still not as thick as the seller describes. It is only about 1.8 inch thickness.
