  • A version of Cinderella that makes sense
This was a re-read for me. I probably first read it in 1999, since I routinely read the Newbery Medal and Honor books every year. It immediately became one of my all-time favorite books. A couple days ago I was reminded of it. On looking it up I found that Amazon lists it as the first book in a series of four (not recognized by Goodreads). So I decided to read them all, and to begin with a re-read of Ella Enchanted. I was delighted to find that it is as good as I remember. (By the way, do not allow the dreadful Anne Hathaway movie nominally based on this book to influence you. It is, in every important way, unrelated.) Ella Enchanted is the retelling of Cinderella that you didn't know you needed. Fairy tales, in their original versions, typically don't make a lot of sense. (The original of Cinderella is the Grimm Brothers's extraordinarily cruel and graphic Aschenputtel.) We expect fairy tales to be somewhat nonsensical moral lessons. Gail Carson Levine writes versions of fairy tales in which the weird stuff that happens makes sense. Ella begins a bit slowly. Levine introduces us carefully to Ella and her curse, to her friend the cook Mandy, and to the Prince. The prince's name is Charmant, which is of course French for "Charming" . And he is -- charming, I mean. It is unfortunate that the word charming has been spoiled by its recent history, so that it is almost impossible to use it unironically as a simple compliment any more. So let me just say that Char (as he is called) is a nice guy that everyone likes, and who deserves to be liked. Ella is much more than this -- she is the coruscating spark upon whom the story is built. I will not declare that YOU will fall in love with her, but I certainly did. Levine describes how Ella and Char fall in love. That too is unironically charming, and also completely natural and believable. It reminded me of this passage in Persuasion: "[Wentworth] was, at that time, a remarkably fine young man, with a great deal of intelligence, spirit, and brilliancy; and Anne an extremely pretty girl, with gentleness, modesty, taste, and feeling. Half the sum of attraction, on either side, might have been enough, ...; but the encounter of such lavish recommendations could not fail. They were gradually acquainted, and when acquainted, rapidly and deeply in love." The only inaccuracy there is that one would not choose the words "an extremely pretty girl, with gentleness, modesty, taste, and feeling" describe a ball of fire like Ella . Levine's careful preparation pays off when Ella's adventures begin, because we understand her and her difficulties. The story is engaging and delightful. And if Levine's goal was to write a version of Cinderella that makes sense, she succeeded. I am not saying that Ella's actions are always sensible. She is a 16-year-old girl in love. For her to be coldly dispassionate and rational in her every act would be unnatural. But she is always a real, believable girl. ... show more

  • Clever, Refreshing, Enchanting!
Overall Review: Ella Enchanted is one of my favorite fairy tale retellings of all time. It's a perfect fantasy: A `damsel in distress', a prince, an indifferent parent, fairies (including a fairy godmother!), man-eating ogres, future-telling gnomes, fun-loving giants, talented elves, an evil step-mother (of course!!), evil and greedy stepsisters... Put all those characters together and add some spur of the moment travels, finishing school, a few balls, and, above all, a curse, and you have a recipe for something unforgettable! The writing for this novel is accessible to any age. From young children to adults, everyone can find something to love. The characters are individuals with such sparkle! Ella's gift with languages is uncanny and so much fun as she converses with the different species she meets along her way to find the fairy Lucinda and, hopefully, break her curse! The stepsisters are not just nasty--they have personality, even if those personalities are cunning and evil...and a bit daft. There are wonderful moments of humor--as Ella tries to find new ways to thwart the commands she is given, but especially when a wig is stolen! The relationship between Ella and Prince Char is so sweet--from her desire to make him laugh, to the exchanging of letters while he is away in Ayortha, to their final encounter, it's enough to make you sigh with pleasure. Ella Enchanted is a timeless Gem! Overall rating is 5 out of 5 stars! Content Review: PROFANITY: NONE VIOLENCE: A few mild instances SEXUAL CONTENT: NONE MATURE THEMES: Mild RECOMMENDED AGE GROUP: 9+ There is no profanity or sexual content (there is a strain of romance throughout, and two characters kiss, but it is very sweet). The violence centers around the ogres, mostly. They eat living creatures. A horse is eaten. A character is caught by ogres and they talk about which parts they're going to eat (the character is not eaten). Ogres chase down a carriage so they can eat the people inside (again, they're not eaten). Ogres try to eat a human and a gnome. One character dies because of illness. A character always thinks of the worst things that could happen because of a curse (many of them involve death and sadness). Some characters are very cruel to another character (making them become a servant and forcing them to work extremely hard). A few of the themes are overcoming curses (obstacles/difficulties), loss of loved ones, and dealing with difficult people/life situations. I read this book aloud to my children and they loved every minute! Ella Enchanted is a Squeaky Clean Read for ages 9+! • A classic, I buy for every girl I know
This must be my eighteenth purchase of this book. I believe every young girl could benefit from reading this retelling of Cinderella. It is different from the movie so there will be new discoveries for the reader. Gail Carson Levine has crafted a masterpiece.

  • i’m older now.
i read this book so many times as a child. this is the first time reading as an adult and i’m frustrated. Little magic and big magic. it’s big magic when the author wants it to be. why couldn’t ella break the curse to save herself - because she didn’t try hard enough? regardless, this book is cute and one of my absolute favorites. ... show more
