EDIT: I'm leaving my original review below for reference, but I've upgraded my rating to 3 stars because of Elgin's warranty service (outside of Amazon). I'll upgrade it again later if this third pair holds up better than the last two. In the future, I'll buy Elgin products direct from Elgin. The price is the same, shipping would have been free even if it wasn't a warranty order, and it was just as fast as Amazon Prime would have been, without Amazon's empty promises of fast shipping (seriously, Amazon should offer at least partial rebates for Prime memberships this last year). After I posted the review below, Elgin reached out to me through Amazon and said the second pair was still under warranty. Amazon's automated system was saying they were beyond the return window, so I went to the Elgin website (elginusa dot com), and figured out how to request warranty service. I suspect they're prohibited from linking to their website in the Amazon messaging system, and maybe even from telling me how to go about getting warranty service. It seems like Amazon is an irresistible / unavoidable distribution channel for any manufacturer these days, but the 30-day return window, combined with Amazon's restrictions on seller's messaging to buyers makes it difficult for good companies to stand behind their products without customers jumping through a few extra hoops. ************ Original review: 5 stars for the features. Knocked down to 1 star for durability. I really loved these earbuds for the first week. Then they stopped working in a variety of ways. Just before the end of the 30-day return period I went through Amazon's return process, which was great and only took 2 days from when I dropped them off at UPS to receiving the replacement earbuds. I really loved the replacement earbuds for about a month. Then they also stopped working in a variety of ways, just about when the return window closed. Clever, Elgin. Thanks for $99.95 product with a 3 month life. Wouldn't it be a more honest business model to just sell them on subscription for $33.33 a month? Really, how about a pair just like this but with more durable switches and cables, and I wouldn't care if it wasn't waterproof. Here's everything that went wrong with them: Picture 1 shows the charging port rubber cover, which gets worn and difficult to get open without something sharp and pointy. If the earbuds lasted a month longer this little piece would probably just tear off. Pictures 2-6 show the rubber sheaths that cover the plastic housings at each end of the neck strap. I think the neck strap has the antenna inside it, and these housings probably have the batteries inside them. This rubber sheath could come off the rest of the way and I think it wouldn't matter to me, because the soft rubber ends at the collar around the cord, which is hard rubber and seems unlikely to come loose as easily. I wouldn't worry about it, but it is a sign of shoddy materials selection and manufacturing. Picture 7 shows the volume buttons and the power/play/pause button (the dot in the middle). This housing and its buttons were where the most serious problems seemed to come from. The power/play/pause button gets really difficult to actuate. I suspect the microswitch underneath begins wearing a hole into the underside of the rubber cover so you have to press harder and harder to actuate the switch. I also suspect some wires get broken where the cords enter/exit the ends of this housing. The first pair, in week 2, started frequently turning off or disconnecting Bluetooth by themselves. The replacement pair loses audio in the right ear only whenever I move my head sharply or about every other time I press one of the buttons. The earbuds play the following audio prompts: "Power on," "Connected," "Disconnected," and "Power off". Both pairs started skipping the power on and connected prompts most times I turned them on, making it hard to know when the earbuds were on and connected, especially combined with the power/play/pause switch being so difficult to use. I usually have to try several times before I get them connected and playing. Pressing pause turns them off instead. The first pair, this was happening every time by week 4, but with the replacement pair at week 8 it's maybe 1 in 5 times. +++++++++ Comparison to other earbuds / earplugs I've tried: In my two most common use cases, I'm using power tools, or taking a nap or sleeping. In the following, I'm using the phrase "perceived noise reduction" because I'm comparing audio playing earbuds against simple earplugs in a variety of scenarios, and my perception of noise reduction might be inconsistent with the lab-test ratings these products can claim. Elgin Rumble is the best so far for listening to audio while using power tools. I can use a router, hammer drill, or table saw and still hear the podcast or audiobook I'm listening to with 100% comprehension. An angle grinder is pushing it, but even then, with volume up and the earbuds pushed firmly in, I understand most everything. I like the battery housings, which are heavy enough to keep them in place around my neck whether I have the earbuds both in, one in, or neither. They also work really well for a catnap or brief relaxation with white noise in a house full of noisy kids or under my desk at the office. Anker Soundbuds Curves are not rated for noise reduction, but work all right for very moderate power tool use. I could still hear the audio I was listening to, but to hear it well while driving my old truck on the freeway with the window open, for example, I had to press one side into my ear or wear a stocking cap over them. A random orbit sander or cordless drill is about the limit if wearing a stocking cap over them. They lose the little rubber earmold pieces easily when carried tangled up in a pocket. MPow Flame earbuds (I bought an earlier version no longer listed on Amazon, so I don't know about the V5.0 ones currently available) are not rated for noise reduction. Performance with power tools and pickup truck was similar to the Anker Curve earbuds. I went through 3 replacements of these, but again, they were an earlier version than they're selling now, so maybe quality control has improved. Mack's Pillow Soft silicone putty earplugs provide the most noise reduction I've experienced of any single hearing protection product. They're best for sound sleep, but I wouldn't recommend them for power tool use because they're kind of expensive and are only really good for 3-5 uses. If you need the best hearing protection possible, these would be the most comfortable earplugs to pair with a set of over the ear muffs for shooting or loud power tools. Radians custom molded earplugs are super handy and durable. I carry these in a pocket everywhere I go, and they double as a pretty good eraser for removing pencil marks from the wall when hanging a picture or curtain rods. They're firm enough that sometimes they're not comfortable for sleeping long with one ear against a pillow. They come as two separate lumps of epoxy and hardener, which you mix together until they're all the same color, then press into your ear. I've used them to custom fit new earmolds onto an old pair of wired earbuds, and this has served me well for several years as a backup for these Bluetooth headsets when they quit working. Noise reduction is decent, but not as good as either the Mack's or the Rumble. I miss some audio when using a table saw, and the earplugs alone work well enough for comfort when using any power tools, just not quite as well as the Mack's. ... show more

Comfortable and real good battery life. Charging cable is a pain to get in the receptacle. The water cover over the charging receptacle makes it difficult, however it should keep water from getting in the unit. Sound quality is good, not great, but good. Over all a decent unit, would purchase again. Makes working outside mowing or tractor work much better! ... show more

    • Never lose your left earbud again!
I run a farm and these are great for some obvious reasons—they dull the sound of loud equipment. Sound quality is on par with anything in its price range. That the ear buds are connected is excellent, I kept loosing one of them and had enough replacing cheap ones so o invested in these and am satisfied. The earbuds dangling around my shoulders when not in use do predictably get a bit tangled depending on what you’re doing. Comes with an awesome zippered case and several noise canceling earbud sizes. For some reason the Bluetooth doesn’t always reconnect to my iPhone so I have to “forget device” and reconnect it every now and then. ... show more

    • Decent functionality, consistently poor build quality
These isolate well with the tri-flange silicone tips, but they sound pretty muffled and bassy in all the wrong ways. My podcasts app has a "volume booster" toggle that changes the EQ to optimize for spoken word, and that fixed most of my complaints with the tuning for that application (which is what I've done with these almost the entire time I've had them). I do lawn care professionally in cemeteries and on large commercial properties, and for that use case these function perfectly adequately; they reduce a good amount of noise to where any potential hearing damage is much more gradual if present at all. Their NRR of 27 means they're actually good for 10dBA+ of reduction, so if you can get a great seal then they can dramatically improve the safety of having your ears less than six feet away from a mower deck and motor. For $100, despite the lackluster audio quality, these function perfectly adequately for a very specific market of users, likely increasing the price because of it. Here's the problem, though: for $100, these are built very poorly. I received my first pair of the Elgin Rumbles less than two months ago, and my third pair (after two warranty replacements) just arrived a few days ago with more build quality issues. My first two pairs both suffered from a flaw in a couple other reviews where the rubber enclosure on the larger compartments around the neck become unglued, and the yellow plastic underneath started to separate too. My second pair had driver flex issues where when inserted properly and at full depth the left driver would dramatically increase in volume (driver flex isn't a problem unique to these headphones, and it didn't damage them at all, but some people see it as a cause for concern so it's worth mentioning). The third pair I just got already seems to have issues at the same spot, but this time it's seemingly with the plastic compartment underneath the rubber and not the rubber surround. Whenever the cable going into to one side rotates at all, I can hear that plastic housing creaking. It's just plain bad, and it's sad to see what I can only assume is a newer entry in this space of earplugs-that-are-also-headphones fail to live up to the price point. To defend Elgin a bit, they have stood behind this product very well. If my third pair fails, there's a not insignificant chance that they'll send me a fourth and a fifth and so on. Their warranty claim process is simple and completely online, and others have said good things too, so I don't think I'm alone in my positive opinion of their support. The problem is that when I have to rely on these for keeping my hearing safe at work eight hours a day, having a poorly built product isn't an option: I need dependability and high quality. I'll likely switch to either Plugfones or IsoTunes if this continues to happen because worrying about whether my next pair will have the same issues isn't something I should need to do after shelling out $100. ... show more

great headphone and have had 2. biggest downfall is the lack of retention on the actual ear piece that goes in your ear. sometimes when i remove the head phones the ear piece gets stuck in my ear.
