Description

Four CD box. Having created a grassroots buzz with their homemade proto-power pop classic Black Vinyl Shoes, Illinois band Shoes duly attracted major label interest, and they signed to Elektra in early 1979. Over the next three years they released a triptych of classic pop albums - Present Tense, Tongue Twister, and Boomerang - and a clutch of Wurlitzer-worthy seven-inch nuggets that should have catapulted them to fame, fortune and all manner of related excess. Sadly, however, they never quite made the leap from critics' darlings to Top Thirty success, and the band were obliged to settle for enduring cult status as power pop avatars. But while rock-star level fame and fortune never quite came their way, Shoes do have the considerable consolation of knowing that their body of work has stood the test of time far better than many of their more commercially successful contemporaries. This anthology of the band's recordings for Elektra, fleshed out with a swathe of pre-album demos, lost songs, alternative versions and live tracks dating from the same period, is a veritable smorgasbord of perfect pop from a time when Shoes were genuine contenders for rock's glittering prizes. Housed in a stylish clamshell box, Elektrafied contains a 32 page booklet that features rare photos and a new 10,000 essay on the band's adventures during their sojourn with Elektra.

  • FANTASTIC ELECTRA YEARS CLAM SHELL BOX
it is hard not to give this clam shell box 5 stars even though i felt BLACK VINYL SHOES was where it was at and what a release cherry red gave that one about 2 years ago!!! anyway this collection starts in 1979 with the shoes first lp for electra PRESENT TENSE from 1979 ( wich was my favorite one of the 3 records they did for the label between 1979 to 1982) and was a very pioneering record for the mid west power pop scene at this time, you had a lot of great power pop coming out of the mid west 40 years ago by of coarse THE SHOES but others like OFF BROADWAY, THE RUBINOOS, ( one of my favs) THE PEZBAND,THE KNACK and a lot more as the scene was fairly big in the uk among the mod revival and all over the us and down under as well. present tense is kind of a polished up black vinyl shoes type record as black vinyl shoes was originally released by the band themselves in 1976 before they hit the major label here, the disc also includes loads of bonus stuff like home demos and some live stuff from the late 70s into 1980, the second disc here is tongue twister from 1980 and that to was a very good record probably the last shoes record i thought was great back then, as with present tense this disc is loaded with great demo recordings from prior to the tongue twister record, the third album from 1982 boomerang i never really got into some 38 years ago but i must say it has aged well and sounds better to my ears now then it did back in the early 80s, the 4th disc is loaded with B SIDES TO SINGLES, HOME DEMOS & some versions of tracks across these 3 records that have different mixes, all cds fit into mini lp replica sleeves and the remastering sounds fantastic!!!!as good as the remastering on the japan mini lp sleeves they did of these shoes titles back in 2009, this comes in a sturdy hard clam shell box and comes with a fantastic booklet w photos and all from the great days of the late 70s/early 80s power pop scene, i know THE PEZBAND did a reunion and a few dates in japan a few years back but that is it, i am sure the shoes are still active in some capacity but they probably play local or something, anyway the shoes where a great band from my youth, still enjoy the first 3 albums starting with black vinyl shoes to this day!!!! THIS IS A QUALITY COLLECTION LIKE ALL CHERRY RED RELEASES ARE ... show more

  • Elektrafied Box Set Is Amazing!
This is a must for any Shoes fan.. old and new alike. I won't go into the details of the awesome packaging as the previous reviewer did a great job with that. I discovered Shoes when I bought a copy of Tongue Twister back in the 80s because I liked the album cover. I fell in love that album immediately. Then I started searching out other albums by Shoes. I loved all the Elektra albums. It's so nice to see this beautiful collection that features some of their best work. The collection is loaded with bonus demo and live tracks which should attract the fans. I'm also happy to see this collection (minus the bonus tracks) is now streaming on Spotify. I was missing those albums when streaming music. However, the CD box set is worth every penny. You gotta have it! ... show more
