  • I LOVE KERI LAKE. Read her books.
Format: Hardcover
I gave anathema 5 stars, I’m giving this one 4.5. But it ripped me to shreds. While anathema is super fast paced, has expansive lore and world building and a lot of dark tension and hints to painful traumatic pasts for each character, Eldritch takes those traumatic pasts and burrows each and every one into your soul. This book is detailed, gruesome, heartbreaking, devastating and so so dark. It brings you into the shadows of each person and nestles you deep into what makes them who they are. The story took on a bit of a psychological thriller vibe when revisiting a lot of zevanders story and answered a lot of lingering questions while popping up more. I’m rating it a bit lower because while I still LOVE the plot, the depth of the characters and the details in the lore I felt like this one I was clinging on to the backstory chapters for answers and less so caring about what was happening in the present time until towards the end. I did however personally love the addition of khazimirs pov since they are separated it gave good insight to the side characters and also kept the plot moving in both worlds Raivox continues to be my favorite. Check your trigger warnings and if you don’t like spiders pls opt out because I still feel like things are crawling on me. Keri lake thinks so creepily and I’m here for it. ... show more

  • Eldritch - the much anticipated second novel in this trilogy, which did not disappoint!
Format: Kindle
I looked forward to the second installment of this trilogy and was not disappointed at all! Like most ‘middle’ books, there was a lot more world building and side characters to share time with. One of the unique features of Keri Lake’s first foray into gothic fantasy is that she has multiple plot pivots and high points of tension in the story that all lead onwards. The novel has great comic relief at times but is also heartbreaking in the darker themes. In this novel we learn more about Zevander’s past and Cadavros’ involvement - seamless story telling with moments of empathy that made me tear up at times. Maevyth and Zevander’s relationship also progresses but even without their love story, this plot is heavily weighted with good, evil, gods, mysterious characters from the past and most of all - scary zombie like creatures crawling out of the ground! Kudos to Raivox for being the MVP as always! Even if the next book takes a year to be released, the story thus far has advanced so quickly and so much that we had enough to sink our teeth into. Love that Keri did not make it too complex and just let the details unravel with time. Hoping for a more balanced third installment with equal parts Maevyth and Zevander! Highly recommend this rollercoaster of a ride to anyone who likes gothic fantasy! ... show more

  • Gothic Fantasy/Romantasy
Format: Kindle
First of all I’ve only written a few reviews in my over 30 year love affair with books of varying genres. I’ve only written those reviews because the story was so good I felt everyone should read it or I despised how an author presented a heroine. Anywho, I’ve never really seen fantasy as gothic or anything other than just “fantasy”. In this storyline I can definitely see the gothic aspect that encapsulates the entirety of the story. From the world building to the characters that make it, it’s gothic throughout. There is some very detailed world building that captured my attention from the start and the development of the characters was interesting. One review I read for the first book in this series, was pretty harsh about the author jumping to the sexual aspect at the end of the story. I liked the first book and I liked this one too because it made everything come together. It’s a dark storyline, with dark creatures and even darker characters but I’ve loved it so far. Can’t wait for the next, and hopefully last, installment to this interestingly/ incredibly dark love affair. Thanks for a good read Keri Lake! ... show more

  • Hitting a wall reading this..
Format: Paperback
I thoroughly enjoy anathema, and had been anticipating reading this book. But I am hitting a wall and struggling to continue.. While I’m more than half way through and do intend to finish it still, I am having trouble staying locked in at this point. I appreciate the flashbacks to the past that give us an idea of the character backstory but I almost wish it wasn’t constantly jumping between past and present. I would have preferred a part one with the past and part two with storytelling and plot progression but it also feels like the plot is not progressing much. Honestly I just finished one chapter in particular that I felt didn’t need to be there at all.. maybe by the end of the book I’ll change my mind but it’s hard to imagine that now. ... show more
